and those are just her flats

May 5, 2011

It pains me to admit this but I think I may be jealous of my own child.

I know, I know…my parenting skills have reached a new low. I need to seek professional help at this point. I realize this and yet I find that I am jealous…

  • Of Maya’s hair – Straight out of the bathtub her hair is silky and fabulous. Whereas I need my Japanese straightening guru and a gallon of Pantene to make my hair…presentable.
  • That Maya is far more social than me – While I basically had to give my kindergarten friends my ice cream money for them to hang out with me, Maya is pretty much a magnet for everyone. And they buy her the ice cream.
  • That Maya is an expert fundraiser! I hate to solicit money. I am terrible at it! I will avoid it at all costs. And yet Maya was able to raise no less than $310 for her school’s walk-a-thon by calling 14 family members in the span of 25 minutes.

So there I was, walking around the house today with messy hair, feeling anti-social and in need of someone to buy me ice cream, when I ran into this:

A Pile of Sheer Madness. And guess what? I didn't buy Maya a single shoe in this photo.

So now I’m jealous of Maya’s flats. And yes, these are just Maya’s flats, which means she has a whole other pile of shoes.

Anyone feeling my pain now?

I am with you. I am incredibly jealous of my oldest daughter’s wardrobe. I am counting down the days until we can trade clothes.
But I am even more jealous of her athletic ability. I am a negative in the athletic ability department. She keeps on asking me what sports I played as a child. She is incredulous when I tell her none even though I say the SAME THING everytime she asks me.

    hahaha awww…*buys icecream * 😀 …. cute post though ….

I hear they don’t make Tory Burch for kids anymore….

  5. May 5, 2011 3:26 am

I feel your pain. Maya is fabulous. She is your daughter, so she must have got some traits from you! I love her flats.. so cute!!

  6. May 5, 2011 3:31 am

Maya’s a little fashionista in the making! I’m jealous of her shoes…and her hair! 🙂

  7. May 5, 2011 3:51 am

OK. I confess it….. I’m seriously jealous of your kid but kinda happy for her at the same time 🙂

  8. May 5, 2011 3:56 am

    I want to be Maya.

I love this post. I don’t know how you come up with your post ideas but I love it 😉

…I have 3-year old “flats”…that really are not flats…and definitely are not cute.

  9. May 5, 2011 3:59 am

If I lose a tooth… or make all A’s at work… will the shoe fairy come visit me too!?

  10. May 5, 2011 4:08 am

I’m going to raid Maya’s closet this weekend…

And I’m jealous of how social kids are without even thinking about it- no fear. I’ve gotten better with my networking skills over the years, but geez…

  11. May 5, 2011 4:14 am

You have a little diva in Maya,I really like her hair too. Super cute flats collection!

  12. May 5, 2011 4:14 am

Haha! I can relate to the hair qualms, albeit I share the same passion for flats with Maya. There’s a trunk-load here, come and get some 🙂

  13. May 5, 2011 4:25 am

shoot. i’m jealous of her too.

  14. May 5, 2011 4:31 am

I’ve been jealous of Maya’s flats for some time now!

Now I have the added joy of being jealous of her fundraising skills….I hate asking for donations

I guess you’ve made me feel a tiny bit better that I only have boys…I would definitely be coveting the hair and friend-making ability, not to mention all those delicious little shoes. She sounds like a sweetheart though and I’m right back to wishing I had a daughter too!

  17. May 5, 2011 4:46 am

    Um… I’m feeling a bit jealous too…
    *kisses* HH

  18. May 5, 2011 5:25 am

Was one of those pairs from Juicy Couture? I’d be jealous too. 😉

I guess there comes a time when we learn about fashion from our children.

  19. May 5, 2011 6:09 am

Your kid is super fabulous. I want silky and fabulous hair!!!

  20. May 5, 2011 6:24 am

I think Maya needs to start writing guest posts because I want the shoe hookup too! If I had size 5 feet I would definitely be stopping by for a clothes swap, I love Tory Burch flats!

    • May 5, 2011 12:57 pm

If I could shove my foot into her shoes I’d wear them, trust me. And don’t think I haven’t tried…

  21. May 5, 2011 6:28 am

I am jealous of maya too. extremely. more so beacause she got to travel to paris this year but holy tory burch!!!

  22. May 5, 2011 6:59 am

my mom has been telling me since i’m a kid that she’s jealous of me. at least you recognize this is an issue.

  24. May 5, 2011 7:01 am

Oh my goodness, I didn’t realize they made Tory Burch flats for little girls! Incredible! Is it grandparents buying her them? Amazing!

  25. May 5, 2011 7:23 am

You can be jealous of her i’m sure living with someone who knows and has all those can be hard. the hair, fundraising things are hard enough to handle, you didn’t need such pretty flats to remind you.

If I were you I’d buy her ice cream and learn some of her tricks and tips.

p.s I did not get the post update today in my mail, is it only me or anybody else had this problem. who is messing with my updates ?

    • May 5, 2011 1:01 pm

Nobody else has mentioned this issue so I’m not sure what happened. Could it have gone to spam? Your email address is still in the subscription area…let me know if it happens again and I’ll contact WordPress!

      • May 5, 2011 8:46 pm

I figured out what was messing, it was my email account. No worries.

  26. May 5, 2011 7:25 am

I think I am jealous of Maya too. Any chance your in-laws want another grandchild, one who is in her late 30’s and with her blonde hair doesn’t look a bit like the family? Some say I can be charming.

  27. May 5, 2011 7:28 am

WHAT? Look at all those Tory Burch flats that she will grow out of in no time. Sheesh, lucky lucky girl!

  28. May 5, 2011 7:58 am

Only a fabulous mother like you would have sucha fab daughterrr!

  29. May 5, 2011 8:01 am

Wow – thats a lot of shoes! Lucky kid. 🙂

If it makes you feel any better, I had gorgeous, thick, straight hair when I was a kid. Now its thin, straggly, and refuses to do anything I want it to do, ever.

    • May 5, 2011 1:02 pm

This shouldn’t make me feel better but oddly enough it does…

  30. May 5, 2011 8:24 am

You should make yourself feel better by grounding her for leaving them in the floor! Puuuuuunish her! 😉
….and in case anyone has CPS on speed dial. I jest.

  31. May 5, 2011 8:26 am

I want her shoes too!! Where do you put them all???? Good thing you didn’t buy ’em. I see some Tory Birch’s in there. Sounds like you got a great well liked and well rounded kid there. Oh, and a very fashionable one too.

    • May 5, 2011 1:03 pm

Maya has a shoe container from Ikea and her shoes are usually all jumbled in there. Unless she’s looking for a specific pair in which case the rest of her shoes are in a pile on the floor…like this one.

  32. May 5, 2011 8:29 am

I’m jealous of myself at 5. I had long black hair that I never had to clean out of the drain, my skin was flawless, and since I had no self-awareness I could impose myself on /everybody/ and get what I wanted. I didn’t have that many shoes, though. Just a lot of Little Mermaid t-shirts.

  33. May 5, 2011 9:13 am

Wait, how many pairs of Tory Burch flats are in that pile? I counted at least four. I’m certain I can jam my feet into a pair of kids flats so if she ever wants to pass some along, I’m partial to the black ones 😉

  34. May 5, 2011 9:59 am

Think of it this way, she is the best of you and your husband. For example, even though you hate fund-raising, you still might be great at it if you did like doing it 🙂

  35. May 5, 2011 10:14 am

I’m jealous too! Think of it like this, once she is older and her feet are bigger maybe you can ‘borrow’ some of her shoes!

  36. May 5, 2011 10:14 am

tory burch, juicy couture and burberry?? NOW IM JEALOUS!

  37. May 5, 2011 11:47 am

OMG (and I don’t use that term…. ever)
Di you think if I start binding my feet today that they would fit into her shoes by the time she outgrows them?! I want that shoe collection!!!

    • May 5, 2011 1:04 pm

I’ve tried Deena. The binding thing? It didn’t work. My foot still won’t fit in her shoes…

  38. May 5, 2011 11:58 am

Cute cute cute shoes! I’d definitely be Maya’s friend! 🙂

Wow, Maya is a naturally beautiful, charming, smart, stylish girl who is easy to love?

Gee, do you think her mother had anything to do with that??????

    I do!!!

  41. May 5, 2011 1:27 pm

Um, Maya has way nicer and more expensive shoes than I do…. how do you people afford all of this?! 🙂

    • May 5, 2011 6:34 pm

Maya’s grandparents purchase her shoes for her! The truth is, I’m not even sure of Maya’s shoe size.

  42. May 5, 2011 1:39 pm

I LOVE Pantene, I’m jealous of Maya’s shoes and her fundraising skills, and now I want ice cream 😛 Hope you two sweeties are having a super week.

  43. May 5, 2011 2:49 pm

that girl has some fancy shoes!! I definitely get all of mine at Target 🙂

  44. May 5, 2011 3:43 pm

Not gonna lie, I have hair envy when I see her pics! Your mil is going to turn her into a fashionista – if she is not one already. What is even better than how hip and pretty she is how sweet she seems:)

  45. May 5, 2011 5:24 pm

But clearly Maya got her good taste from her Mom! Hehe, I must admit, I’M jealous of those shoes. And she has gorgeous hair. Good genetics!

  46. May 5, 2011 7:19 pm

I’m jealous too. Unfrizzy hair and a load of cute flats to wear would be heaven!

  47. May 5, 2011 7:35 pm

So funny. My daughter is 28, and I think she has gorgeous hair, great social and sales skills, and definitely great, and an abundant amount of shoes. And I too feel I have none of this. 🙂

Sister, I almost choked on my water when I saw Maya’s pile of flats. Homegirl knows what’s what. Though, she may be a tinier, soulmate-version of myself, because I’m told that I was quite the magnet for patent leather shoes when I was a wee pup.

Just don’t let her beat you to a Mimi-style closet, kay?

  49. May 6, 2011 3:06 am

Hell, I want to be Maya!!!
My 6 year old has a way better social life than I do.

  50. May 6, 2011 5:43 am

I totally feel your pain. I was a shy, unsocial child, I still don’t know what to do with my hair, and don’t own a single pair of flats. 😀 On the other hand, this means have a lot of room for improvement. Wouldn’t life be boring if you’d already achieved everything?

  51. May 6, 2011 6:33 am

Ameena, that is more pairs of shoes than I own…period! And that’s including my winter boots, trail shoes and the $12 heels I got married in! I’m a size 10(!!!), so all hope of wearing children’s sizes was abandoned some time ago. But just remember, the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree! All of Maya’s beauty had to come from somewhere…

  52. May 6, 2011 6:38 am

ummmmmm i’m jealous of Maya too!!!! haha!

  53. May 6, 2011 9:39 am

Read the comments and I feel reassured that Maya is not using her fundraising money to buy the shoes. The hair thing kills me. I have boys, their surfer hair is perfect. One has shiny hair, the other wavy ocean hair my curling iron can’t create. So I guess, like you, I am jealous of my children. I also realize in them so many hang-ups adults (or I) have that you don’t have when you’re younger. Something tells me you probably have a mean pile of shoes too.

  54. May 6, 2011 9:44 am

Lucky girl, her shoes are super cute! Hope you have a great weekend (and Happy Mother’s Day!), Ameena!

  56. May 6, 2011 1:01 pm

Wow, I am speechless. Lucky kid. If she has really expensive taste in the future you can just blame the grandparents and hopefully they’ll continue to pick up the tab. My parents have 16 grandkids so Tory Burch flats are definitely not in their future. If their lucky my mom will score them some used American Girl books at a garage sale.

  57. May 6, 2011 1:02 pm

They are lucky, they are lucky. College was so long ago.

  58. May 6, 2011 3:22 pm

Have you ever considered that maybe…Maya is lucky to have YOU as a mommy! 😀
Social butterflies like Maya are created because they’ve had a great breeding ground. So I’m convinced you played a huge role in raising Maya as a lovable, charming individual. 🙂

  59. May 6, 2011 4:07 pm

Like Motha Like Child =) except for the flats thing (quite a collection I’m a little jealous too).

  60. May 6, 2011 4:42 pm

Those flats are alllll adorable!! i’m a little jealous 😉

  61. May 6, 2011 5:00 pm

Not being all that fashion-conscious, I’m guessing that these are designer flats? I’m also guessing that her other shoes are not heels?

Yes, your daughter is pretty fabulous, but so are you- apples and oranges right? I’ll buy you an ice cream…dairy free of course 😉

  62. May 6, 2011 5:26 pm

I’m so jealous!! Juicy shoes…I wish!!
I have pretty small feet hint hint 😉 Whenever I go home, my 11 year old sister seems to have more fabulous clothes and shoes than me. Since she’s already taller than me, I get her hand me downs sometimes…I’m going home tomorrow and sooo looking forward to raiding her closet!

  63. May 6, 2011 8:42 pm

Grandparents are the source of unconditional love. They are so crucial for helping add history and ritual, but also that sense of “wow….my love is out of this world!” They are meant to spoil and aggravate the kids. She doesn’t live with them, right? You play different roles, and I am jealous that she still has them in her life

    • May 7, 2011 7:58 am

Actually, you make a good point. I am jealous (but really thrilled) that Maya has all 4 grandparents in her life – which is something I didn’t have growing up…

  64. May 6, 2011 9:06 pm

Count me in on team jelly belly. I have been eyeing the Burberry flats seriously. At least she has great fashion sense which is one more thing envy worthy. Cest la vie?

like, I’d have more lego’s than anyone on the block.

The flip side – she’ll be raiding your closet too! I have a friend who every time I see her has a new cool sweater or bag because of her mother’s closet.

You have to admit that Maya is so good at #3 because she is an adorable young’un soliciting money from her family. If I tried that now, my family members would laugh in my ear 😛 I like some of the suggestions in the above comments – perfect closet raiding opportunity in the future! And remember, no matter how naturally gorgeous your Maya is, she came from an equally gorgeous Momma! Happy Mother’s Day, Ameena!!!
