45 minutes

I try so very hard to begin the day on a calm note.

I wake up at 5:15 am so that I can do yoga, 15 minutes of Headspace, email catchup, and maybe even fit in a batch of muffins if all the stars are aligned.

This schedule is no problem during the dark days of winter when I literally have to haul Maya out of bed.

(Side Note: I don’t need to haul Ali out of bed because he flies west during the winter months).

IMG_1038But these days, with the sun rising at 5:38 am, Maya and Ali are often awake quite early. Which means they more often than not lumber into the living room with the grace of a football player to:

  • turn on the electric kettle (Ali)
  • ask what they should eat for breakfast (Maya)
  • ask what they should wear (Ali and Maya)
  • ask Siri, at the top of their lungs: “What is the temperature in NYC today?” (Maya)
I know they see me on my yoga mat, headphones on, trying to master crow pose. I know they do.
So why the questions?

Why why why?


So I realize that Ali and Maya live here too, and they have every right to get up and move about and ask Siri all of their annoying weather related questions in whichever tone they feel is appropriate for a conversation with the iPad.

But if I can’t even get 45 minutes of quiet at the crack of dawn, so that I can begin the day calmly, where exactly does that leave me?

Not calm. That’s for sure.

    I wish I could trade their early bird tendencies for even a quarter of my insomniac superpowers–they’d stay asleep far later;) and maybe I’d actually go to bed at night…

      I had a bought of insomnia and the only thing that seemed to help was giving up chocolate. I think I am VERY sensitive to even small doses of caffeine.

      Maybe give it a try?

    A – I look for your blog almost every day ma’am. You must start writing more often.
    B – How on God’s green earth do you get up so early? I’ve tried working out that early but I feel like my workouts are half hearted that early in the AM.

      Thanks for the nice comment FIP! I wish I had more time to write, and so appreciate you reading.

      As far as getting up early, Maya was a colicky child that NEVER slept. So I was trained about 10 years ago to not need much sleep. And things never changed…

    I think the part we need to zoom in on here is that Ali actually goes into the kitchen and turns on the electric kettle in the morning. For some reason this surprises me. Should I not be surprised?
    Also, I wish I could get up that early! I would even be happy with a 6am daily wake up. I suppose living in a place where I just get in my car and am to work within 10 minutes has its benefits. Either way, I should get up earlier for some kind of workout and real breakfast. That is a thing that should happen.

      Well yes, you should be surprised Ali ventures into the kitchen to lift a finger. But Ali takes his tea VERY seriously. It’s the first thing he does in the morning. It’s an entire process…sigh.

    I’m up early too. Just not doing yoga, I just can’t sleep. I know when 7:30 hits, it’s time to make coffee for my husband. 7:40 hits, the 24 year old son (that moved back home in January) wakes up, takes a 1/2 hour shower and asks if I can make him a breakfast sandwich before he leaves for work. I was a short order cook in a previous life apparently and have that done in under 3 minutes. I need shoulder surgery 6/4. Those 2 are going to be in shock as I can’t do much of anything for 3 weeks. The week before, I am teaching them both how to use the stove and the washer/dryer. Should be fun, how can I give up control? I will live through the pain, but my OCD (self diagnosed) will be harder to deal with. Will your daughter be available for a consult w/ her pop up therapy gig? 🙂

      I’m so sorry about your shoulder…on the bright side, it’s a doctor mandated 3 week break from your side career as a short order cook?

      As for the OCD, have you tried Headspace? It’s been instrumental in helping me take baby steps to give up control of EVERYTHING. I have a ways to go but it’s helping.

    How about just staying in your room, lock it and ignore them altogether? 🙂

      Unfortunately Ali also lives in that room. I haven’t found an alternate arrangement for him yet. LOL

    Lol seriously crow pose. I can do tree. Thank you Ameena. This made me smile. There was a time when I lived with all boys. My brothers and Dad. They would panic at seeing me doing Cat … Lol

    I’ve given up on trying to have any semblance of quiet time when the family’s in the house with me. It just adds to the stress I already have. Luckily, I have several hours during the day when I’m alone. I don’t do crow pose (or know what it is), but I relish the quiet. 🙂

    Awww sorry Ameena… I’m amazed you wake up so early.. you and I are such opposites. 🙂 I need to start asking Siri the weather instead of unlocking my phone each time. 🙂

    Props to you for waking up that early (even if the stars don’t always align in your favor). I cannot wake up a minute earlier than I have to. I just can’t!!! I leave just enough time to get up, dress, grab some food and leave.

      It becomes a habit…try it for a few weeks and I promise you’ll find the energy!

      I love Headspace…I’ve been doing it daily since February and it’s really helped me be more patient and live in the present.

      I have a long way to go…as Maya would attest!

    Oh man, I can see why missing that morning meditation and relaxation would throw off the whole day! I think you need your own soundproof room with a lock on the inside 😉

    I had to laugh at Maya and Ali both asking you what they should wear today 😛

    See, I have the opposite problem. All I want is to show Professor Husband that I CAN do crow pose and various other poses and his dis-interest only eggs me on to “annoy” him further. I put annoy in quotes because that’s speculation and his claim. I whole-heartedly disagree. I’m pretty sure I’m bringing light and love to him by way of my practice and the least he could do is stop working for work or working on his PhD papers and watch me hold crow for 5 seconds. That’s what marriage is all about, right?

      Bringing light and love? That is hysterical….I love it. We should switch lives…

      And 5 seconds is pretty admirable. Crow is such a challenge for me.

        It took a about 7 months or so for me to get it! I’m working on headstand now! REB is un-interested in both. Rude.

    omg crazy meena!! we are on such opposite sleep patterns it’s not even funny…..we’re starting our down time around 10-11p after kids are tucked in, hilarious! don’t know when we last saw the crack of dawn…def coming up w ramadan though….don’t know how you do it! mis you!!
