I Can’t Stop

December 2, 2010

I think my newfound shopping habit has spiraled out of control.

It all started a few weeks ago when I was preparing for my trip to NYC.  Naturally I had to have new boots for the cold, harsh NYC winter.  And skinny pants to tuck into the boots.  And while I was looking at the new pants I found a shirt that completed the ensemble perfectly.

I bought it all but my God the guilt!  I felt a bit better when I assured myself that I’d only buy one or two things max when I finally got to NYC.

Yeah, right.

A pair of shoes, another pair of pants, 3 shirts, 2 tank tops, 1 outfit for Maya (aka guilty mom purchase), a $50 box of Godiva (my willpower was compromised by exhaustion), and a couple of other miscellaneous items later, I realized I spent 4 hours at Bloomingdale’s.

It seemed a bit tacky to take a photo of the things I bought so instead, may I present you with a photo of what I bought Maya. I only wish they carried Hello Kitty Velour in my size.

Considering that I spent about 4 hours shopping in total this year, this is a ridiculous disproportionate amount of time to be in one store.  The worst part of it all is that I am still itching to go to my local Bloomingdale’s to see what else I can amass!

I was considering joining a support group but then last night I found Ali ogling laptops on the Home Shopping Network…and now all is well in my world once more.

I agree. I’d like Hello Kitty clothing in my size too.

  2. December 2, 2010 4:34 am

haha the first thing i said was “woah they make some killer hello kitty clothes!”
id love to see adult versions of kids clothes..then maybe i wouldnt keep a few of my old stretchy pants from grade 4 in which i tell people “oh no, theyre just tight capri pants for exercise” LOL… yea i try…

❤ hope you're doing well love. ps. I LOVE THE HEADER; mommy and maya ❤

  3. December 2, 2010 4:47 am

Oh I get the same way! I shop so much I get sick to my stomach 🙂

I need to join one of those support groups like the one in Shopaholic 😉

Wait – I want to know about the $50 Godiva box!?

  5. December 2, 2010 5:07 am

I used to feel guilty for getting lots of nice goodies, but hubby says: if life is a Monopoly board, you only go around once. If a little treat makes you happy, and you can afford it, go for it :D. You deserve nice things! My only word of advice is only buy stuff that you really like, not stuff that you sort of like. Otherwise u end up with a house full of loads of crap u will never wear.
    *kisses* HH

You hubby sounds like a very smart man. I will remember the Monopoly analogy from here on out!

  6. December 2, 2010 5:11 am

Tacky, schmacky!! I want to see what you got!!! 🙂

  7. December 2, 2010 5:20 am

I’ll make you feel better: Before I got sick, my mom and I would shop for 10 hours straight. We didn’t always buy a ton, but it’d be a full day of shopping.

  8. December 2, 2010 5:28 am

I’m not a big shopper either. I avoid crowded malls (or simply just “malls”) as much as possible. But it’s that time of year. Everyone gets the itch. I assume mine will happen over the weekend…

  9. December 2, 2010 5:32 am

Oooo the Hello Kitty velour looks so cute! Maya, can I borrow it please? please? 😛 And I agree with Anna in the above comments, I wanna see your new clothes!

  10. December 2, 2010 6:26 am

I get SUCH buyers remorse. It’s awful! But buying for your kids totally excuses you from the guilt, right?!?

  11. December 2, 2010 7:01 am

There is nothing like retail therapy! It doesn’t always feel so good after though…when you realize that you just spent all your money and don’t even have change for the bus. Or maybe that’s just me?
Sometimes I go into this strange state of mind when I’m shopping and I don’t even know what I’m doing until it’s over. Thankfully, this doesn’t happen very often because malls and crowds make me anxious and I avoid them.
I’m loving the Hello Kitty velour. When I was a kid, I could never get the pants with the patterns on the bottom because I was too little. Hello Kitty would have gotten her head chopped off by the tailor.

I don’t shop often, but when I do I go crazy. Clothes shopping frustrates me, so I avoid it until I have holes in my clothes, then buy an entire wardrobe. Its probably not the best idea.

  13. December 2, 2010 7:39 am

I want Hello Kitty Velour in my size too!

    cutest darn sweatsuit EVER.

I never outgrew Hello Kitty. It’s insane.

and I agree….show us what you found!!!

  14. December 2, 2010 7:41 am

Nice outfit for Maya with Hello kitty prints. I am not a fan of hello kitty so it is fine, if they are at my size. Regarding shopping I don’t know how many times I visit same spot. My craze is for baking stuffs. Hubby says I will stop there everyday even if I know what is in there in every aisle.

  15. December 2, 2010 7:52 am

Tis the time to shop with NO guilt!

  16. December 2, 2010 8:11 am

I know just what you mean. Once the floodgates are opened those shopping juices start flowing and you can’t stop!!! Well, you can’t go to NYC without shopping so totally justified.

  17. December 2, 2010 8:15 am

It is the holiday season-therefore all shopping is warranted. Even that box of Godiva (in fact, holiday season may make that especially warranted).

Btw- love the new look of the blog!! I feel like so many of my favorites are getting makeovers!

  18. December 2, 2010 8:22 am

I seriously wish I could limit myself to so little shopping. I do manage to do maybe … 10 hours a year outside of my marathon cross-border trips (which are about 15 hours a weekend x 3).

I have a love/hate relationship with shopping. I seem to not be able to do it in moderation (sizing, fits, changing every 5 min. etc. frustrate me), but if I psych myself up (I call it a “marathon”) I develop amazing endurance and buy more than I strictly speaking need to.

  19. December 2, 2010 8:24 am

ok dont hate me, but why do people go crazy over hello kitty? i might possibly be the only asian to not like that darn cat.

  20. December 2, 2010 8:31 am

Lol, if you find a good support group let me know and I’ll join you! 😉 I’ve been ordering online from Macy’s like it’s going out of style. I totally justify it though, one gift for Mike, five for me…and so it continues, lol!

  21. December 2, 2010 8:41 am

I am a fan of the ruffles on the pockets! And really, I think you should post a picture of your purchases so all of us leading boring lives can live vicariously through your fun 🙂

  22. December 2, 2010 9:22 am

cute outfit for maya. I love shopping too and I have the same thought process.

  23. December 2, 2010 9:27 am

Just pretend like you had a midlife Christmas shopping crisis.

  24. December 2, 2010 9:47 am

Lol! Looks like someone has gotten into the Christmas spirit? Seeing all those beautiful decorations always puts me in a shopping mood. I swear, it’s partly a ploy by the malls to get you to shop more. The happier you feel, the more you spend.

And you know what? You were on vacation so spend away. I learned my lesson last year. We went to Orlando and I saw this pair of shoes that I really liked but I was too cheap to get them. When I came back to Canada, I saw the same brand but uglier shoes for double the price. I’m still kicking myself for that. I never did get my shoes. So I’ve sworn from now on when I’m on vacation and I see something I like, I’m just going to buy it. It’ll save both Gary and I some headache in the long run.

Two thumbs up to you for not making the same mistake I did. K would flip over that cute outfit you got Maya! Tis the season, my friend 😉

  25. December 2, 2010 10:08 am

ny might not have been the best place for someone with a shopping addiction 😉

  26. December 2, 2010 10:53 am

Only 4 hours? That’s restrained! NYC shopping sucks you in – I have spent many a day wnadering and shopping through the stores of NYC despite having no such plans in my mind upon arrival 😉 That jumpsuit for Maya is too cute and if Ali is ogling laptops, I’d take that as a sign to shop away!

  27. December 2, 2010 11:09 am

My 5 year old LOVES Hello Kitty! I think she needs that outfit for Christmas 🙂 I’m off to do more online shopping now 😉

    Jen

  28. December 2, 2010 11:18 am

It would not be tacky to show what you bought!

I do find that the more I shop, the more I want to shop.

  29. December 2, 2010 11:25 am

I am powerless around malls. Especially if they contain Antropologie, Nordstrom, J. Crew or Lululemon. It’s bad….

I want a velour Hello Kitty outfit too. Looks so comfy.

  30. December 2, 2010 11:58 am

I totally want to see what you bought.

And don’t u knw the rule of thumb?

    Husband’s one purchase = 100 of ours.

  31. December 2, 2010 12:04 pm

What a cute outfit…I have boys and there closes were never really cute.
I am afraid it is a shopping gene that you have dear, and the surgery to have it removed would be far costlier than just going with it 😉

  32. December 2, 2010 2:53 pm

Hey Ameena! I don’t get that way about shopping for clothes and stuff, but only b/c I hate it so much. I can’t stand being in stores or the mall. Ugh, I’m like a dude sitting on the bench in the store just waiting for all the girls to hurry up and finish (smile). I understand the urge though, as I do get that way about stuff I can eat. I’m always horrified at my Whole Foods receipt. Indeed, I always feel so ashamed at how I ‘amass’ there;)

  33. December 2, 2010 5:28 pm

Seriously Ameena, 4 hours and support group. Based on that number I think I should check into a rehab asap 🙂

Cute outfit for Maya, although I really think you should exhibit your purchases too. Not tacky at all! I have to buy a big box of Godiva when I visit my parents in Jan. it is my brothers special demand!!

  34. December 2, 2010 6:52 pm

I love Maya’s new Hello Kitty outfit, its great.
I say go for it and then when you think your done…. go for it some more 🙂 Life’s too short & all that (hey, don’t knock my motto… a girls gotta do what a girls gotta do to hide her shopping addictions & that’s all I gotta say about that 🙂

  35. December 2, 2010 8:40 pm

A girl gotta do what a girls gotta do. There is a quote that says “middle age is when you realize that your kids and your clothes are about the same age”, just think of this as your fight agains middle age 😉

  36. December 2, 2010 8:44 pm

Lady, you underestimate me. My mother on at least two separate occasions has tried to gift me with a Bedazzler. We could have rhinestones and kitty-faces on some yoga pants in no time.

And Godiva is considered a mulligan in the shopping world. No one is mentally strong enough to stay away after picking through rack after rack of goodies.

  37. December 2, 2010 10:13 pm

Too cute! I also would like the Hello Kitty outfit in adult sizes please! Lets send the HK ceo the memo! lol 🙂

  38. December 3, 2010 4:38 am

I don’t go shopping too often, but I’ve had a few compulsive shopping trips as well, and felt so awkwardly bad and good afterwards at the same time! The best strategy is to just don’t enter the store!

  40. December 3, 2010 6:19 am

Shopping is so addictive! I love the feeling of ripping off the price tags and hanging the new items in my clothing. It is like giving a new home to a puppy for me, haha.

  41. December 3, 2010 6:19 am

    * hanging the new items in my closet I mean…..wow, thank goodness it is Friday.

  42. December 3, 2010 9:35 am

I am right there with ya on that addiction. I have limited real shopping but we have Mango on the island and Spaghetti which I like, but very little else with any name I know. Some of it is good and others I am not so sure about.

  43. December 3, 2010 10:26 am

Oh Hello Kitty… I see so much of your paraphernalia…

Hahahaha.. I love that you purchased $50 worth of chocolate at the end. Now I’m lurking on the Godiva website and salivating…..

I might be alone in this one but I’m glad they don’t make hello kitty in adult sizes. She creeps me out a bit.

  45. December 3, 2010 12:46 pm

Oh my gosh! That Hello Kitty outfit is adorable and blingy all at once! I would love a matching set for me and my daughter!!

    Ah…shopping is fun 🙂

  46. December 3, 2010 12:55 pm

oh lady! i, too, love love LOVE to shop! i suppose there are worse things to be “addicted” to but you’re right 4 hrs can go right on by with a blink of an eye! love maya’s outfit and i’m thinking it would be okay to photo op the purchases. at the very least the boots. mmkay? 🙂

  47. December 3, 2010 2:51 pm

The more I shop…the more I want to shop. I’ve had dreams where i throw out everything in my closet and start over with all new stuff. SICK!

I’d love to see pics of what you bought btw!

  48. December 3, 2010 9:24 pm

We all have our vices. 🙂

  49. December 3, 2010 10:51 pm

This is why I don’t let myself buy anything. Once I start, I can’t stop! When I go to Anthropologie, I leave my wallet in the car or give it to Ryan. It is the only way I can practice any self-control! Thank you for sharing. Have a wonderful weekend!

  50. December 4, 2010 5:34 am

This is why I am scared to start. I know that once I do, there will be no end. That it will be a benign blur of clicks and carts and then BAM our credit card bill will turn tragedy. It is so hard this time of year though, isn’t it? Not just because it’s the holidays, but because it is so festive out there, such a fun time to meander around ogling lovely things. December is decidedly not good for will power or the wallet. Thanks for making me smile and realize that I am far from alone in my consumerist compulsions 🙂

  51. December 4, 2010 3:33 pm

How I wish we were rich so I could better justify my desire for shopping and nice things. Have you read the shopaholic series? Those always help me feel better about myself.

  52. December 4, 2010 5:22 pm

I am a firm believer in retail therapy- so don’t beat yourself up too much over this. 🙂 I totally gave up on the FF Plan, but am thinking about starting it again after the holidays, especially since you told me it worked for you. I love the HK velour suit- so girly and cute!

    • December 6, 2010 8:11 pm

Let me know if you need any help with the Fat Flush. I consider myself somewhat of an expert!!

  53. December 5, 2010 6:36 am

I’ve never bought anything from the home shopping network…so I googled it and looked up somethings, happy to be “above [it, meaning Christmas shopping] experience”. um….I suckered into spending 45 minutes looking at Nate and Tori’s stuff!
Research shows that the setting, the music, actually makes people spend MORE….I think it is our wanting to spend more time than get me to fork over more dough for the “experience.”

  54. December 5, 2010 6:45 pm

I don’t know about the whole Hello Kitty in adult size thing. I’d be creeped out if my boyfriend actually liked the outfit.

I am queen of shopping for myself this time of year. I disguise it with gift shopping but oddly no one ends up with a gift but me.

  55. December 10, 2010 8:49 pm

See “the Great Fitness Experiment.” Charlotte did a great confession about the fact that she’s addicted to shopping. NOT THAT YOU ARE!!

I hope that Hello Kitty outfit fits you- it looks a little small.

My name is loveth anetor I live
    in California
    THE GREAT dr alexzanderhightemple BROUGHT
MY HUSBAND BACK TO ME IN
    JUST A ONE DAY.
i got married 4months ago. My
    husband and I have been
living a very happy and lovely
life. So as time went on, I
    began to notice this strange
    attitude that he was
    possessing. He was now going
out with other girls, to the
extent that he was no longer
picking up my calls, and he
was not even sleeping in my
    house anymore. I became
    confused and didn’t know what
    to do anymore. So i
    became worried and stranded,
    that brought so many
thoughts into my mind, because I
    have never experienced
a thing like this before in my life.
So I decided to visit a spell
caster, to see if he can help
me out. So immediately I went
    to the internet, where I
saw an amazing testimony of a
    spell caster who brought
    someone’s ex lover back,so I
    contacted him immediately
and I explained to him all my
    problems and he told me
that it will be very easy for him
    to solve, compare to the
ones he has done before. And he
    also gave me some
proof to be really sure of her
    work, and he assured me
that my husband will come back
    to me immediately after
he is through with the spell
casting. And also he told me
to put all my trust in him and I
    really obeyed him.
So it was 8:00 am on the next
    morning, when I was about
going to work, when i received
    my husband’s call, and he
told me that he was coming back
    home, and he apologized
to me, and told me that he is
very sorry for the pain that
he has cost me. And after some
    hours later, he really came
back home, and that was how we
    continued our marriage
with lots of love and happiness,
    and our love was now
    stronger than how it were
    before.
And these great man also told
    me that once my heart
desire has been granted unto me
    that i should go and
testify of his work right here on
    the internet. Right now I
am the happiest woman on earth
    today as I am writing
this testimony, and I want to
    really thank
    dr alexzander for
    bringing back my
husband, and for bringing joy and
    love to my family.so you
all there having dificulties or the
    other don,t worry every
    thing will be fine
So my greatest advice for you
    out there who your husband
or your wife is acting strange or
    behaving the same way
like this, or you have any
    problem with your relationship or
anything related to do with spell
casting, is for you to go
and visit this great man anytime,
    and i assure you that
she will be of help to you, and I
    am 100% sure that he
    will solve it out.once again
    contact him on these email
now..and your problem we be all over because I really trust him as the best spell caster in the world.alexzanderhightemple@gmail.com
