Leaving on a Jet Plane…

November 22, 2010

The signs were all around us…my jaded child was becoming even more jaded.

Friday before school – “Mama, don’t I look pretty today?”

Friday, on the way to school – “Why are you driving in the left lane you stupid person!?!”

Friday, during the kindergarten Thanksgiving feast – “I am thankful for my toys.  And I guess my Mama.”

Yes, as much as I love to vacation sans Maya I realized that I would be remiss as a parent if I didn’t take my self-absorbed, temperamental, and materialistic child out of West Los Angeles for a little while.

So we hopped on a plane and are currently in New York City.  This trip serves two purposes:

  1. I hope to convince Ali to move to the East Coast where I obviously belong, and
  2. I hope to give Maya a dose of non-Hollywood reality.

How do you keep a kid busy for 5 hours? You pump her full of cartoons, carbs, and sugar.

But seeing as I just heard a cab driver yell, “Get the F@#$ out-of-the-way, dumb$hit!” I now realize that Maya’s dose of reality might include coming home with a whole new vocabulary.

Whatever.

I’m headed to Bloomingdale’s to dwell on it.  And to buy some new shoes.

Haha I hope Maya wasn’t referring to you driving in the left lane… 😛 Are you in NY for thanksgiving? Either way, have a wonderful trip!!

    • November 22, 2010 7:16 pm

I am in NYC until Friday…so we are here for Thanksgiving!

  2. November 22, 2010 2:11 am

Wooooo hooooooo! You are going to have so much fun. If Ali gets you a place in NY, I am soooooooooo coming over daaahling, we will go shopping together… and eating.
Dont forget to gain the obligatory 5 pounds of vacation weight LOL
    *kisses* HH

Have fun in the Big Apple. Great time of year to be there.

  4. November 22, 2010 6:26 am

I had to laugh at going from LA to NYC for “reality”. I don’t know which of us is more “real”, but it’s like Little House on the Prairie here compared to those two places!

Hope you have a lovely vacation, and happy shoe shopping!

  5. November 22, 2010 8:11 am

Have a great time in NY, Ameena! Everytime I vacation now, my diaper bag becomes Dora’s back pack. Everything I need to keep the kiddies quiet is in that magical bag ;-). You do what you gotta do, right? Now it’s just a matter of training the hubby to use “Dora’s backpack”.

  6. November 22, 2010 8:22 am

Can you dwell on a few things in Bloomingdales for me too? I have never ever stepped foot in a Bloomingdales. AAAAH.

Is that Beauty and the Beast? So need to get a dvd copy of that now!

that and you braved the TSA bullcrap to travel. BRAVE WOMAN.

Enjoy your trip to NY…and you better come home. It seems most of my favorite bloggers now live in NYC.

Did you bring your new scarf?????

    xoxoxo

  7. November 22, 2010 8:23 am

ps I forgot to say I like your new header!

    very cool!

  8. November 22, 2010 8:48 am

Pretty new header! And yea, you should totally move to the East Coast!

Hope you found some nice new shoes, I love Bloomies!

  9. November 22, 2010 8:52 am

Yes you TOTALLY need to move to NYC! And I mean, I definitely have some interesting words in my vocabulary but I turned out pretty okay.

The only time I’d be free to meet is on Wednesday for lunch. School is driving me crazy this week! What do you think??

Have fun! I’ve never been to NYC and would love to go. And also – I love the new header. 🙂

  13. November 22, 2010 11:09 am

YAY have fun! such a bummer that we’re so close yet so far away with you in NYC hahah

  14. November 22, 2010 11:10 am

that will be quite an extensive vocabulary when she gets home 🙂

    have fun in NYC.

  15. November 22, 2010 11:16 am

Oh, so much fun to be had in the city! I hope you find some pretty new shoes! I’m sure Maya is loving it there.

  16. November 22, 2010 11:17 am

Enjoy! I’m not sure NYC will make her any less jaded… but it will be a change of pace and weather. Are the lights in Rockefeller Center lit yet?

    • November 22, 2010 7:51 pm

Not yet! That is supposed to happen by the end of the month I think.

  17. November 22, 2010 11:19 am

Ameena, PLEASE move to the east coast!

I know you guys will have a grand time in NYC. Watch out for those crazy cabbies.

PS – I hope you are able to eat tomatoes again soon. Apologies.

  18. November 22, 2010 11:22 am

I think New York will be very formative and educational for her. It’s the only place I’ve ever seen cabbies honk at cops.

I like your new design, by the way (It is new-ish, right? I am not having an anneurism?)

    • November 22, 2010 4:59 pm

it is new…you aren’t having an anneurism. 🙂

  19. November 22, 2010 11:29 am

Hilarious. Glad you got Maya out of LA although she may come home a little NYC’d. I love things about the east coast and things about the west coat, but one thing for sure is that it has to be warm.

  20. November 22, 2010 11:56 am

Never a dull moment in the life of Maya and Ameena Din. I love reading about your adventures/one liners. Lucky you guys in NYC.

Super cute new blog header. I love it!!!

  21. November 22, 2010 12:41 pm

I hope you kids enjoy NYC!

I’m really hoping pumping her full of sugar didn’t backfire for you once you landed…

  22. November 22, 2010 12:48 pm

So hilarious – and I ❤ the new header. It's so cute!!

  23. November 22, 2010 1:12 pm

Ha! I don’t know if NY is so much a break from as LA as much as it is just a change in weather… Maybe a farm in VT? 🙂 Good Luck!

  24. November 22, 2010 1:51 pm

I’ve always thought that it would be impossible to raise a kid in L.A. (especially being raised myself in the good ole midwest). But I could see NYC being kinda problematic as well. Either way, at least there is some fantastic shopping. Distraction is good sometimes! Enjoy your vacation 🙂

  25. November 22, 2010 2:02 pm

NYC!!!! I love that city! Have fun.

  26. November 22, 2010 2:15 pm

Even on a plane you’re funny 🙂 Have fun in NYC…try to keep Maya’s ears closed when the taxi drivers are around.

Haha, New York cabies – so crazy!

Have a safe and fun trip!

  29. November 22, 2010 4:05 pm

Have fun! I used to go to NYC all the time – when I was doing the bi-coastal dating thing (that ended up getting old rather quickly). Enjoy all the lights and the decorations. Are you going to the parade? I personally hate parades. Just another reason why I am not a parent.

  30. November 22, 2010 5:51 pm

A new look you have here! Very nice!

And I think L.A. and New York could not be more different! I guess I know from this post which you like better….

  31. November 22, 2010 6:15 pm

What fun! I love NY! If we could afford anything bigger than a closet, we’d move in a heartbeat. Until then, I’ll live vicariously through your vacation (and the shopping *swoon*) 🙂

  32. November 22, 2010 6:48 pm

Love the new look! My kids are just as bad. Just getting them to say thank you is a chore. Have a wonderful time in NY! It’s an awesome city!

Summary: Maya will be getting down with her bad self.

I’ve gotta give you credit – 5 hours of television, refined carbs and solitude will pretty much reset your system.

Have a lovely time in NYC!

  34. November 22, 2010 8:48 pm

First of all, I love, love LOVE the new look. My favorite chudidhar has a similar pattern and colors! The new layout is good, too.

Yes, my girl is sometimes very shallow too! She wants to hang out with some relatives just because she knows they bring a toy with every visit!! Sigh…kids!

  35. November 22, 2010 8:50 pm

Have a nice Thanksgiving in NY 😀 Must be freezing over there. It’s freezing in LA today! Btw love your new header.. 😀 And good luck with the Black Friday Shopping! Sadly I have to work on that day.

  36. November 22, 2010 10:28 pm

I like the new design too!

and I bet it’s all nice and frosty in NYC. Have a wonderful time!! I hope you get to see the naked cowboy (hey that would be a dose of reality for Maya!)

  37. November 22, 2010 10:47 pm

Very nice new fancy schmancy festive season header Ameena. Can I come with you to Bloomingdales to ponder the answer to the worlds bigger dilemmas with you? I’m pretty sure the answer to all questions are there 😉

  38. November 22, 2010 11:09 pm

Have a great trip, Ameena!! And lol, Maya is going to learn those colorful vocab sometime in her life anyway, so better early so she can fight back the meanies in school.

  39. November 23, 2010 5:58 am

Bloomies is quite possibly my fav store! I can’t wait to read more about your NYC adventures 🙂

  40. November 23, 2010 6:59 am

Have a great time! We SO want to vacation in NYC with the kids. Waiting until the youngest is a couple years older so she can hang with us should we need to run away from something or someone;)

Can you believe I’ve never been to New York? Oh, the shame.

  43. November 23, 2010 10:38 am

Thank you for the ideas Ameena, I’m definitely checking out gonannies.com! Hope your trip is going well!

  44. November 23, 2010 11:02 am

I think kids don’t need patience on planes…adults do. Kids do great, when we recognize that HEY, I AM AN ADULT, and I feel like I am going crazy. I’ve got years of experience and a fully developed brain to deal with this crazy boxed in artificial air feeling…but a kid? hmmm….they do better than us!

  45. November 23, 2010 12:06 pm

The other day, the 2 year old and i were waiting at the bus stop, when he saw the bus coming, he muttered “dammit they are home…”

Have a great time in NYC, it’s my dream city!!!

  46. November 23, 2010 12:20 pm

At least Maya is thankful, right, lol? 🙂 Hope you have a wonderful time in NYC (and yes, convince Ali!) 😉

  47. November 23, 2010 12:47 pm

Ha! I would love to live on the East Coast. And Bloomingdales is a beautiful thing 🙂

  48. November 23, 2010 4:31 pm

I have immense respect for parents taking children on airplanes for long periods of time, especially!! Thank the Lord for technology 😉

  49. November 23, 2010 6:09 pm

Ahahahaha.. oh, Maya. Now.. which parent is she taking after? 😉

By the way, I love the new header!

i’m so excited to read your recaps. nyc is my favorite place!! and i’m sick of living in the middle of the us…i wanna be on the east coast too!

  59. November 27, 2010 5:43 am

Too funny as always, Ameena! I don’t know which city would be better to raise a child though. Hmm… You know, if I ever have a child, I really hope to move back to Atlanta or, even more ideal, Asheville. Since materialism and bad family values are rampant (even in the latter cities), I’d like to at least raise my child in a place where people know it and make fun of themselves about how ridiculous they are. Rather than a place like my present location where people don’t even realize it & feel that all of these bad values are how ‘one should be/think’.
Hmm, East coast is probably better for Maya in terms of ‘realizing’ things/stuff/junk (smile). Maybe….

  60. November 28, 2010 3:48 pm

Maya cracks me up. “I am thankful for my toys. And I guess my Mama” LOL. Oh children. There’s no getting out of it no matter where you go.

Stay warm and bundle up. 🙂

    Hope you got great shoes!
