The 4G

June 25, 2010

First off, I believe a moment of silence is in order to honor the addition of the 4G in to the Din Household.

3 Generations of iPhones - I swear that this photo was not staged...Ali really did arrange everything this way.

Yes that’s right everyone, Ali brought his new phone home Wednesday afternoon and I believe he is officially in love.  If I have to hear once more about the dual camera I may just lose my mind.

Despite Ali’s numerous requests (and at one point demands), I’ve stuck to my guns and refused to fork over my right arm and kidney to upgrade my ancient, first generation iPhone.  I think Ali is rather embarrassed that his wife is walking around with a relic, but we made amends when I agreed to take over his old 3G.  My selflessness never ceases to amaze me.

Anyway, as Ali and his new phone became acquainted with one another yesterday, my friend Maliha and I threw a baby shower for our good friend Nadia.

Me, Nadia, and Maliha

Since this is Nadia’s 3rd baby she really didn’t need much other than diapers, hence our theme “Tea and Diapers.”

In Nadia’s honor, I actually broke out my wedding china for the first time ever since we received it a decade ago.  Why?  Well because it has to be hand washed.  Enough said.

We had lots of tea…

A percolator is a lazy girl's best friend.

And lots of food: date muffins, scones, olive bread + honey + gorgonzola, tea sandwiches, and mixed berries.

When will I learn how to take a picture without weird shadows/bad lighting? That is a rhetorical question of course.

We also had a fabulous chocolate cake from Bristol Farms…

As an icing expert, this cake is definitely right up there with the best of them.

 And we played some games…

Game question: What food does Nadia not like? Answer: There is no such thing.

Maya came home from school just as the party was winding down, and as she fought to once again be the center of attention, Ali disappeared to spend some more quality time with his technology.  I’m not going to lie, I’m feeling a bit left out.

Ali and his iPhone sitting in a tree…

If I had a bigger tech budget…sorry Ameena…but I’d probably be as bad.

I am still swooing my iPad, and glaring at anyone who thinks it’s theirs *coughJJcough*

my new cell has internet and i am in net heaven. No where cool like an iPhone but I feel like I got the cadillac with the iPad.

I just need an air card now. HATE sharing bandwidth with Xbox.
    HATE IT I SAY

and your sweet sweet party. tea and diapers never looked so elegant! Nice job and congratulations to Nadia!

  2. June 25, 2010 2:56 pm

The way Ali arranged the iphones…just like my perfectionist boyfriend! Sounds like a great party with your ladies!

  3. June 25, 2010 3:06 pm

Congrats on being a proud owner of the 4G!!!

I love your china! We try to use ours sometimes…but yeah, handwashing is a pain in the behind.

  4. June 25, 2010 3:39 pm

What a lovely shower. It is the season and an afternoon tea seems like a delightful way to celebrate. Congrats on the new addition to the iphone family too!

  5. June 25, 2010 5:06 pm

Oh the 4G. Hubby doesn’t have any iPhone so this is his birthday present. Huzzah 😉

I love the shower photos. Looks like you guys had a blast–and the cake is amazing.

Ali cracks me up with his affair with technology! 😉 The way he had the phones placed is too funny!!

What a lovely baby shower!! I love all the sunflowers!!!!! 🙂 And that cake… mmmmmmmmm, it’s gorgeous!!

  7. June 25, 2010 5:44 pm

Oh the technology! I’ve been wanting the new iPhone 4 ever since I first heard about it. Same as you I’m still running on the first generation iPhone. Just waiting for something to go wrong with it so I can get the latest, but nothing bad ever happens to it so I’ll just have to stick with for now until then. Maybe wait for iPhone 5? “If it ain’t broke don’t fix it.”

My brothers all have iphones and I’m very happy with my LG Xenon! ah the simplicity<3. Your hair is lookin great Ameena I hope you've warmed up to it.

    • June 26, 2010 7:46 am

I still miss my long hair but with the help of my flat iron my current style and I are in an okay place…for now!

  11. June 25, 2010 8:07 pm

Oh gosh, I’m ashamed to admit if I were lucky enough to get the 4G I’d probably be doing what Ali is doing too. Sorry Ameena, but I told you you’ll always get honest words from me. Gary has the 3G, I have the 3G S, and now we’re trying to justify getting the 4G. Pssst, Ali, what was your excuse? On the bright side Ameena, this just means you’re now entitled to a gift bigger than the iPhone.

You and your friends look lovely in that picture! Your friend Nadia also has that beautiful pregnancy happy glow – luv it! Looks like you guys threw a great baby shower. What a wonderful way to start the weekend. Have a great one!

I’ll never quite understand obsessions with technology, but I have come to accept them. I accept that many people in my life, especially my dad, will be either blackberrying or iphoneing under the table when I’m talking to them. Actually, most people in my life shun the iPhone and go for Blackberry (not that it’s any better in terms of technomania). I personally am not a huge fan of the touch screen, and all the applications are too overwhelming for me anyway. But congrats on your upgrade! You are officially a good techno-wife.

That party looks lovely. That is a beautiful picture of you and your two friends!

abe wants an iphone badly too. i just ignore him.
god that cake looks like a winner! bristol farms, what can’t you do?!

  14. June 25, 2010 10:20 pm

I have a cell phone from the early 2000’s. A 3G or just about anything for that matter would be an upgrade for me!

  15. June 26, 2010 2:39 am

My brother just got the new iphone and he is positively over the moon. Boys and their technology…

The baby shower looks like so much fun! You gals did a great job throwing it together.

  16. June 26, 2010 3:21 am

A first gen iPhone? Psh! Get with the program, girl! 😉

We didn’t get the iPhone up here in Canada ’till a good while after it came out, so my first one was the 3G. I was always playing with it at first, but kind of lost interest in it after a short while. I would say that maybe it’ll be the same way with Ali, but from all the things you said in the past… maybe not. Sorry, Ameena… but you still have us and your lovely friends 🙂

  17. June 26, 2010 3:24 am

On somedays when I’m home, my mom will randomly break out the “good china” when it’s just the two of us for tea. I usually look at her in horror. Mostly because I wonder if I’m going to have to wash it myself…

I know she does it to feel special, but I sit there thinking about how I would have been just fine with her “Happy 40th Bday” mug that has an obnoxious-looking old woman on it. I guess that’s not the “something special” she has in mind when I come to visit…

  18. June 26, 2010 3:24 am

This is too funny! Perhaps Ali and 4G were love at first sight! 🙂 Your china is stunning! I’m with you on the hand wash battle! I probably would have been waiting to use it too! Have a great weekend!

  19. June 26, 2010 5:19 am

Hah! Y’know – you could have a whole blog on Ali’s love affair with technology! I love it -especially since I’m sure many could relate…just remember it could be worse – it could be an addiction to drugs or alcohol or something! Just sayin’ 😉

You look so beautiful !!! You out-do the cake even 🙂

  20. June 26, 2010 5:30 am

How funny about Ali and his phone! Guys and technology definitely go hand-in-hand, lol.

The baby shower looks like so much fun — that cake is gorgeous!

  21. June 26, 2010 7:22 am

Uhhh I literally laughed out loud at Ali’s display. My brother next door thinks I’m retarded. Ali reminds me so much of my friends here at Waterloo–more so than it is possible to justify. (They’re all uber techies here.)

Congratulations on breaking out the wedding china–extra kudos for doing this despite knowing you’ll have to hand-wash afterward. I hope your friends know how awesome of a friend you are, Ameena 🙂

Also, tea and diapers is a great theme for a baby shower. 🙂

I love baby showers. This one looks particularly fabulous. I also LOVE Martinelli’s 🙂 I’m a bit sad that more of my friends don’t have babies so I rarely get to go to showers or host them 😦 We didn’t get any wedding china because at the time, non-cooking, non-formal-dinner-party-throwing me thought, “What will I do with china?” Now I’m sad I didn’t get any so I’ve laid claim to my mother in law’s china and I will fight anyone who says otherwise.

people and their technology are so funny! I don’t even own an Iphone–but sometimes wish I did–there are so many useful (and time wasting) apps! That cake looks beautiful and was as the tea display. I love going to showers!

  25. June 26, 2010 10:44 am

What a gorgeous tea set! I am obsessed with things like that, sorry, because I am obsessed with tea. 🙂

My boyfriend and I are planning to get married when he gets home from deployment and for some reason I just keep thinking about how excited I am to receive china as a wedding gift. haha I am a dork.

Oh and my boyfriend is mr. technology too. I could care less about that stuff. he passes all his old stuff down to me – old blackberry, old computer, etc.

Never owned an iPhone before, but planning on getting the 4G!
Your family get-together looks beautiful! 🙂

  28. June 26, 2010 3:17 pm

I’m embarrassed to admit that I didn’t even know there were multiple generations of the iPhone…

    That’s a cute tea set!

So I just typed an entire long comment and then pushed a button and lost it. Figures. So basically – I hate doing dishes too. If my boyfriend dares use a glass in my house he has to wash it himself.
And – I’m scared of the iPhone. I don’t understand it, and I don’t like touch screens. It would always have fingerprints on it! Plus, I still don’t understand what 3G even is, let alone 4G.

  30. June 26, 2010 8:11 pm

generations of phones, generations of good friends, and generations of delicious cake recipes all in a post 🙂

umm and how BEAUTIFUL are you! 🙂 🙂

i love games night..especially pictionary and sherades (not sure if i spelt that right 😉

  31. June 27, 2010 9:32 am

first of all the baby shower looks lovely!! i want that cake!!
my boyfriend is JUST LIKE ALI with the damn phone…he’s obsessed with his HTC Pro and every time they come out with a new one, guess who has it! There was even a time when he had his regular phone (all fancy touch phone) and a BlackBerry for his fire dept … it was a freaking nightmare. That was when I implemented the “no phones in bed” rule.

  32. June 27, 2010 3:39 pm

I hate fancy phones – mostly because I break and or lose my phone monthly, but props to anyone who can actually work those things and not destory it.

The party looks so fun and I love the tea and diapers theme – cute!

  33. June 27, 2010 3:56 pm

Awww I want a new iPhone SO BAD. But I think your hubbie has a problem.. have you looked into rehab for him? heh

And that cake..oh wow wow wow.

  34. June 27, 2010 4:26 pm

I have yet to get an iPhone of any generation, but I know I really should, to keep up with technology and not become my grandmother 50 years too early. We’ll see…

The shower looks fun! I love your outfit. Very cute.

  35. June 30, 2010 7:28 pm

The pic with all the iphones is just hilarious!

A lovely baby shower, too. Congrats to you friend.
