finally

June 5, 2013

It’s obvious that I’m in the minority when it comes to not particularly loving Los Angeles.

I base this on the fact that another gazillion people moved here last year and seem to love everything about L.A.

Weekend pictures: Another great meal at True Food Kitchen, A friend's extraordinary shoes, a whole lot of dessert, homemade waffles.

I can’t really put my finger on what it is about this city that I am not a fan of. Because really, when one overlooks the:

  • Horrendous traffic at all hours of the day and night,
  • Fact that everyone has perfect hair (which obviously gives me a ridiculous complex about mine),
  • Earthquakes that seem to occur more and more frequently,
  • Crazy drivers who think they are above all laws,
  • Smog (that is at least partially responsible for my eczema),
  • Lack of seasons,
  • Non-walkability factor,
  • Lack of public transportation,
  • Scary fights over parking spaces,
  • Fact that valet parking must be a budgeted line item….
Breakfast at Le Pain Quotidien: this tiny waffle packs a giant sugar punch. Maya was bouncing off the walls minutes later.

…and looks at the good things instead, like:

…this city really isn’t so bad after all.

In any case, I’m thinking that my unpopular opinions about Los Angeles are now irrelevant. Why? Because we’re moving to NYC this summer.

Finally.

A lot of the reasons you don’t like LA are the reasons I can no longer take Oman: crazy drivers, lack of four seasons, and lack of public transportation being the top negatives. Exciting that you’re moving to the East Coast!

    • June 5, 2013 7:04 pm

      So I’m thinking that I shouldn’t take a trip to Oman? 🙂

      • June 10, 2013 6:54 am

It’s good for a visit, as long as you can leave after about a month. 🙂

I know a few people who hate LA for similar reasons, but you are right, it’s a minority. I’m happy for you that you finally get to move to NYC…I’m assuming you’ll be in Manhattan? I hope it works out for you — living in NYC is definitely different than visiting!

    • June 5, 2013 7:04 pm

Yes, we are moving to Manhattan. And by living there I’ll get to see if I really love it as much as I think I will!

  3. June 5, 2013 12:32 am

Whoaaaaa, congratulations! I’d say I’d miss you here in LA but I so far only interrct online, so instead I’ll say: I look forward to hearing what you don’t like about life in New York;)

Actually I’m jealous a tiny bit, at some point in my life I need to live there but not until someone’s hiring me to be in a play or something…

    • June 5, 2013 7:05 pm

I’m sure I’ll start complaining about what I don’t like about NY in no time….I’m a serial complainer. 🙂

  4. June 5, 2013 1:27 am

Looking forward to posts on ur likes and dislikes in NYC..:)

  5. June 5, 2013 3:01 am

Seriously?!? How exciting! I know how much you love it! I have a few memories of various trips to LA and I can understand the frustration you would live with. Although it’s hard not to love your friend’s shoes! So excited for you!

    • June 5, 2013 7:07 pm

Thank you Fran…I am so excited as well! I can’t believe it’s finally happening…

  6. June 5, 2013 3:35 am

First of all – LOVE your friends shoes. I want em!

And second – N Y friggin CEEEEEEE???? woo ! Do you know which part of the city you’ll be living in?

    • June 5, 2013 7:08 pm

Not 100% sure yet but definitely Manhattan. We are going to find a place next week (hopefully).

  7. June 5, 2013 4:04 am

Exciting news! Good luck with the move. How does Maya feel about leaving her grandparents??

    • June 5, 2013 7:08 pm

Maya is not thrilled about it – she loves them so much – but luckily they can come visit us anytime!

Wowza! How awesome. Don’t worry, the traffic is terrible in the city but there is tons of public transportation. You’ll get seasons with minimal snow. Perhaps you will take up skiing and now you will have to take your daughter skating at Rockefeller Center (joking about the skiing). You and Ali can go to Times Square and watch the ball drop on New years Eve with all the crazies (and see people pee in the street haha)! (Couldn’t pay me to do that-my husband did it once, not pee in the street-well maybe he did, I wasn’t there) Broadway shows, new restaurants, Chinatown, Little Italy, Yankee Stadium, fresh bread, cheese…..what’s not to love? Head’s up-it’s the humidity. Not exactly going to help your hair-get the Argan oil I recommended ahead of time 🙂 You are going to love NY. Plus, it’s a good excuse to buy a new wardrobe. Climate change and all 🙂 When’s the big move? Very excited for you!

    • June 5, 2013 7:09 pm

I’m a horrible skier but I actually have gone ice skating with Maya in Rockefeller Center. Times Square on NYE will never happen for me. Ever. I just can’t do large crowds without feeling stuck.

Argan oil…really need to look into that now!!

  9. June 5, 2013 4:52 am

Congrats, Ameena!!!! Your dream came true!!!

  10. June 5, 2013 5:57 am

Congratulations Ameena! 🙂 That’s great news! You will definitely get more seasons in NYC 😉

    • June 5, 2013 7:10 pm

I’m a bit scared of the winter season, if I’m being 100% honest…

  11. June 5, 2013 6:20 am

Super excited that you’ll be moving here! However I must warn you that smog is ever-present in this city also. And scary fights over parking spaces will be replaced by scary fights over someone trying to steal your cab. Public transport is great but with it comes the coalescence of BOs during the summer along with the usual people who floss, cut their nails and eat McDs on the train. But we have Central Park so not all is lost! Welcome to NYC!

    • June 5, 2013 7:12 pm

Thanks Sam…I had to laugh at this one. Why didn’t you mention these things when I told you we were moving? LOL

Central Park is really worth all of the negatives above. 🙂 Can’t wait to see you!

  17. June 5, 2013 8:11 am

NewYork sounds exciting, wishing you good luck :).

  18. June 5, 2013 8:31 am

Wha?!? We need more details, friend! I am really glad we’ll have a place to crash when we visit NYC (not so subtle hint) but am bummed you’ll be even further away now!

    • June 5, 2013 8:16 pm

I’m sad too but maybe you’ll come visit? We haven’t seen each other in SO long…hard to believe.

  19. June 5, 2013 9:04 am

    – OMG at your friend’s shoes.
    – We liked LA when we were there last month! But yes, a short visit is totally different than actually staying at a place 🙂
    – Congrats on the move!

    • June 5, 2013 8:17 pm

  23. June 5, 2013 9:27 am

What?!?! Oh my gosh you must be ecstatic!!!! I know I am being nosy but please give more info about why you’re moving. A job, your love for NYC, do tell. And you are not in the minority because I only live about 90 miles from L.A. and I only make it there about once every 3 years, the traffic is just too much.

And that waffle is crazy small. I would have needed about 5 more.

    • June 5, 2013 8:18 pm

Ali’s job is taking us there but I’ve LOVED NYC for as long as I can remember.

Yes…the traffic here? Is just too much. Sad that I’m leaving and we didn’t get to meet! We can blame it on the traffic. 🙂

      • June 9, 2013 4:02 pm

  31. June 5, 2013 2:16 pm

YAY! That’ll be nice for you to move here, NYC is like the opposite of LA in so many ways, but both cities have a great food scene. That salmon salad looks good! I have to do breakfast/brunch at Le Pain… I’ve only had an avocado tartine there and I remember it being so good. Congrats again! I’m gonna now send this article to my husband since he is my ass about moving to LA.

I live in the greater nyc area so I can add my two cents on few topics:

Horrendous traffic at all hours of the day and night.
NYC has an equally bad reputation but you wont be driving in the city like most people and taking the smelly, crowded, packed with tourists subway trains. Yes, you will be able to walk everywhere which is a big plus compared to LA. But you will have to learn to save yourself from the city cabs that wont stop a hair away from you and always ready to run over.

Fact that everyone has perfect hair (which obviously gives me a ridiculous complex about mine).

Earthquakes that seem to occur more and more frequently.
Ok now this one is definitely not common in nyc. We have had a few scares but nowhere close to california situation.

Crazy drivers who think they are above all laws.
We have plenty on nyc roads. One word of advice – be careful at nights and dont venture on dead streets where speed lovers may just go nuts. And especially careful of cabs at all times. Be ready to jump on trash and pot holes while trying to save yourself from traffic.

Smog (that is at least partially responsible for my eczema).
You have to see how it goes.

    Lack of seasons.
We have two seasons – cold and hot. Spring and autumn play hide and seek.

    Non-walkability factor.
Well this is one great pleasure here in nyc.
    So you will love it.

    Lack of public transportation.
This is another big plus in nyc but it will take to adjust to subway trains.
Public transportaion is one reason why a gazzilion people move to nyc too.

    Scary fights over parking spaces.
You might see worse in nyc. Manhattan is too small compared to LA.

Fact that valet parking must be a budgeted line item….
    Interesting…

    • June 6, 2013 8:00 pm

I actually really love the subway. I’ve taken it in the summer and it isn’t super pleasant in the heat but it’s really a much better alternative to sitting in the blazing heat in massive traffic here in LA.

And above all? I LOVE to walk. In March I walked from our hotel in midtown to Chelsea Market. I was in heaven.

Great comment Sam…thanks for the insight!

  39. June 6, 2013 11:10 am

I’m glad you are moving to a city you love 🙂

I moved here from Manhattan and have enjoyed living here for many decades, but it’s almost time for me to move to a city I love (Paris).

I think the hardest part for both of us will be fitting our new bulky Winter clothes into the tiny closet spaces in our new cities 😦

    • June 6, 2013 8:01 pm

I hope to move to Paris one day! Such a gorgeous place.

I think the apartments in Paris are 1/4 the size and 4X the price of NYC. Scary!

      • June 9, 2013 5:54 pm

My French friends say NYC is the only place that has smaller apartments for more $ than Paris 🙂 Just like any city, you can find good deals if you know people or have connections.
Enjoy your new city and your new adventure!

  40. June 6, 2013 1:38 pm

I think what makes you a New Yorker at heart is the whole walking thing. New Yorkers walk everywhere. Not the case in LA. I felt a reverse of that when I moved from the South to Chicago. Everyone in Chicago takes public transportation just about. I’m so used to driving EVERYWHERE. It was a really big change. I’ve compromised by taking cabs everywhere in Chicago. =D

    • June 6, 2013 8:02 pm

Are you not a fan of public transportation? I am so excited to give up my car!! Can’t wait to make driving someone else’s headache.

  41. June 6, 2013 5:50 pm

I absolutely detest LA as well. I’m born and raised in San Francisco, so naturally I am biased toward Norcal vs Socal. However, I was down there last week to take care of some school things, and found myself in 3 1/2 hour traffic from Santa Barbara -> LA. I literally cried in the car and felt so frustrated.
