Rodeo Drive is Overrated

Rodeo Drive is beautiful.  Probably the most recognizable street in the world.  The shops are amazing, the people are stunning, and the whole scene looks just like it does in the movies.  But just one block over from the glitz and glamour of Rodeo is my absolute favorite street in Beverly Hills – Canon Drive.  

 

Canon Drive is very understated but still beautiful in its own way, and best of all?  The street is lined with so many of my favorite restaurants!  So when four of my best friends offered to take me out to lunch to celebrate my birthday, I naturally jumped at the chance to visit one of my most favorite places in Los Angeles – Porta Via

Porta Via Restaurant is a traditional California bistro with delicious food.  I have eaten lunch and dinner here numerous times and I haven’t had a bad meal yet.  I especially love the fact that the restaurant uses seasonal organic ingredients, wild caught seafood, and all natural meat.  The freshness of their food absolutely reflects their cooking philosophy. 

Since temperatures were hovering in the 80’s we decided to sit outside. 

 

Thanks to the great weather the restaurant was absolutely packed so we were lucky to score a great table. 

We ordered the Porta Via chips as an appetizer: 

 

I am not a big potato chip fan but as far as potato chips go these were good. 

For my entrée I ordered the Gulf Shrimp Salad: 

Gulf Shrimp, Organic Baby Greens, Green Beans, Tuscan White Beans, Avocado, Tomatoes, and Grapes in a Lemon Vinaigrette.

It was delicious and light.  Perfect for the blazing temperatures! 

My friend Maliha ordered the Tuna Nicoise: 

White Albacore Tuna, Organic Baby Greens, Green Beans, Tomatoes, Black Olives, Capers & Toasted Almonds in a Lemon Vinaigrette

Nadia ordered the Chicken Salad Sandwich:

And my friends Shahbano and Yasmyne ordered the Asian Chicken Salad and the Grilled Salmon.  Sorry I didn’t take pictures but they were sitting on the other side of the table and I had a feeling they wouldn’t appreciate me reaching over to snap a photo. 

Once in a while I pretend I have a few manners. 

Not only was I excited to see a gluten-free dessert with a candle in it, but I was also excited that I didn’t have to fight Maya for it.  

Passion Fruit Sorbet with Whipped Cream and Berries

It only took 34 years and a gluten-intolerance to discover my love for sorbet.  This was delicious.

We stayed at the restaurant for at least 3 hours, just chatting and enjoying the sunshine.  

 

 

 

 

There is nothing like catching up with good friends.  And my friends are the most loyal, caring, and thoughtful people I know. 

Thank you girls, for an amazing afternoon of great food and good conversation.  You have no idea how much I appreciate all of you!

I’ve Learned a Few Things

I expected to have all the answers by the time my two digit age started with a “3.”  Well, despite turning 34 yesterday I can honestly say that I have very few answers and a whole lot of questions.  But I have picked up a few things over the years.  Just a few things.  And these I know for sure:

The little brother who drove you completely crazy when you were younger?  He’ll turn out to be your best friend.  He will know you so well that he’ll visit your favorite store and buy you a birthday gift.  He’ll pick out a Joie shirt you saw in InStyle and a sweater that you love but would never buy for yourself because it is too expensive. 

You will be speechless and touched.

The parents that used to drive you nuts when you were a kid?  They are listening when you randomly mention how much you love everything in the Lucy catalogue.  Then they will go and buy you all of it.  In the right size.

They will also continue the tradition of getting you a Valentine’s gift, despite the fact you turned 34.  They will buy you two of your favorite things – books and chocolate. 

You will spend your birthday evening grateful that they bought you stretch pants as you consume way too much of the aforementioned chocolate.

Your in-laws?  The ones who often treat you better than they treat their own son?  They will overwhelm you by buying you a new handbag, even though you insisted you didn’t want or need anything for your birthday.

And after the initial shock wears off, you will immediately switch all of your stuff to your new purse and carry it around in awe for the rest of the day.

The nearly 5-year-old who drives you completely mad on a daily basis?  She will put her feet up on the table at your birthday lunch and you will want to smack her silly. 

Then she’ll insist on spitting on blowing out the candles on your birthday dessert.  And she’ll eat the whole thing. 

But she looks so cute in the Valentine’s Day outfit you gave her that you’ll forgive her.  Just barely.  But you’ll forgive her.

The husband?  The one whose bad habits you make fun of on your blog?  He will find you a restaurant that serves homemade chips and guacamole because that is the ONLY thing you want to have for your birthday dinner.

And you will eat way too many chips with guacamole for dinner.  Because it’s your birthday.

But the most important thing that I’ve learned thus far?  While it is nice to receive so many thoughtful, beautiful gifts for your birthday, the best gift ever are the amazing people in your life.

And I am grateful for all of them.

An Old Favorite

Every year as February 14th approaches, I aspire to do many things to get ready for Valentine’s Day.  I plan to make cute goody bags for Maya’s classmates.  I tell Maya that we will make her cards this year instead of buying Hello Kitty ones again.  I decide to make some delicious, complicated desserts for friends and family.  And as a result of all my good intentions, I find myself mesmerized by the gorgeous crafts, cookies, and cupcakes that plaster the covers of the “Mom magazines” that I pretend I don’t read. 

Yes, it’s true.  I read Martha Stewart’s Magazine.  I am officially old.

On the rare occasion I stop being cheap and actually buy Martha’s magazine, I take it home and Maya and I contemplate which Valentine’s Day recipe we are going to tackle.  After many arguments and the inevitable name calling session, we finally decide on something and make a list of the utensils and ingredients the recipes calls for.  Since it is rare that we have any type of food in our kitchen, and even rarer that we have baking supplies, we drive down to our not-at-all-convenient Target to purchase the needed items: heart-shaped muffin tins, cupcake liners, sprinkles, frosting, and cupcake mix.

When we finally get home and unload all the stuff Martha tells us we need, plus $100 worth of other great stuff we didn’t need but purchased anyway, Maya and I look at each other and instantly feel overwhelmed.  And tired.  Target takes a lot out of you, you know. 

So we put away the heart-shaped muffin tins for another day.  We store the heart cupcake liners next to the ones we purchased from Target the previous year but forgot about.  We stash the cupcake mix in the cupboard for when Ali demands some trans-fat filled dessert.  And we pull out this tried and true recipe instead.

Vanilla Jam Cupcakes

1/2 cup of butter, at room temperature
1/2 cup of white sugar or NuNaturals Baking Blend
3 egg whites
1 tablespoon of vanilla
1 1/2 cups of all-purpose flour
1 1/2 teaspoons of baking powder
1/4 teaspoon of salt
1/4 cup + 2 tablespoons of milk (I use Vanilla Almond Breeze)
zest of 1 lemon (optional)
Strawberry Jam

1. Cream the butter and sugar together.
2. Add the eggs, vanilla, and lemon zest and mix well.
3. Add the milk and mix well.
4. In a separate bowl mix the flour, baking powder, and salt.
5. Slowly add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing well.
6. Pour into 10 greased muffin tins (or cupcake liners).
7. Bake at 350 degrees for 18-20 minutes.

Once the cupcakes are completely cooled take a serrated knife and cut the cupcake top off. Using a small cookie cutter, cut out a heart in the middle of the cupcake top and sprinkle with powdered sugar.  Drop a teaspoon of jam on the base of the cupcake, and center the cupcake top back on. The jam will hold it in place.

Thanks to Maya’s knife skills, and finger licking habits, these might not look as professional or pretty as Martha’s cupcakes do.  But I promise that they taste just as good, and dare I say, even better?
