Rolling with it

March 21, 2010

Weekends stress me out for a couple of reasons:

1. How are we going to keep Maya entertained for two whole days?
2. Weekends = eating out 1-2 meals a day. Eating out = an increased likelihood for a horrible stomach ache.

Instead of stressing out as always though, I decided to roll with it.

I rolled with breakfast…despite the fact that making homemade pancakes is torture because I have to make them, I can’t eat them, and I have to clean the mess up, I still cooked up a batch for Ali and Maya.  How selfless am I?

Ali's pancakes with apple and kiwi slices

Maya's pancakes with fruit and chocolate chips.

Maya and I struck a deal: if she ate all her fruit than she could have 5 chocolate chips on her pancake.  Why 5?  Well because she is 5-years-old.  Of course.

I rolled with lunch…I was so excited to meet with Sophia, Jenn, Andy, and Amanda at Loteria Grill at the Farmer’s Market.

Although I visited the Farmer’s Market daily when I worked next door at CBS, I never had a chance to eat at Loteria until yesterday.

I was going to stick with something safe and order the Summer Salad but when Sophia pointed out I could eat a salad anywhere, I decided to roll with it and be a little more daring.  Thank you Sophia for giving me the push I needed!

I ordered two tacos, the Champiñones con Epazote and the Calabacitas.

Left - zucchini and roasted corn succotash with salsa verde, onion, cilantro, and queso fresco. Right - mushrooms with epazote, with onions, cilantro, queso fresco, and salsa verde.

I was feeling particularly daring and decided to order the Noptalitos as well.

Cactus salad served with salsa verde and queso fresco.

Unfortunately neither of these dishes were very good.  The tacos were really small and bland.  I am glad I tried the cactus but it wasn’t very flavorful either. Still, I ate everything (except the chips) because I was so hungry.  I was still hungry afterwards but luckily, lunch wasn’t really about the food but the nice company instead.  Plus it was a beautiful day and since we were sitting outside the food was really just an afterthought.

Thank you Sophia for organizing this great lunch…I can’t wait to meet up with you again.

I rolled with some coffee…I left lunch after a couple of hours to meet up with my brother.  We headed to Urth Caffe for a cup of coffee.  I love cappuccinos but I haven’t been ordering them because sometimes I get stomach aches from milk.  So I was thrilled, and I mean thrilled to learn that Urth Caffe has almond milk!

Italian cappuccino with almond milk.

The price of this coffee rivaled some of the ones I’ve ordered in Paris but I was just happy to have a cappuccino minus a stomach ache.  My brother and I sat outside and enjoyed the fabulous weather.  My brother paid for my overpriced coffee without saying a word about how overpriced it was.  My brother rocks.

I rolled with dinner…after Ali finally resurfaced after taking Maya to a birthday party and dropping her at his parent’s place, we headed out to dinner.  One of my most favorite places in Los Angeles is Gulfstream but we don’t go too often because I have a bit of a problem paying $17 for Maya’s chicken fingers, plus the wait is usually 30-45 minutes or more.  When I want to eat, I want to eat right then.  I do not want to wait another 30-45 minutes.  Lucky for us, we were able to get a table immediately yesterday.

I ordered my favorite salmon:

Cedar plank roasted salmon with roasted seasonal vegetables.

 Ali ordered a burger:

Cheeseburger on a homemade bun, with a baked potato.

I rolled with the after-dinner entertainment…after dinner we decided to catch a movie.  In a theater.  This may not seem like a big deal but since it happens only 2-3 times a year, a theater movie is pretty exciting stuff.

We ended up seeing Remember Me which was excellent.  Not only was the ending very unexpected but the cast was great too.  The girls next to me were going crazy over Robert Pattinson, who I had never heard of.  I was going crazy over Pierce Brosnan who they probably had never heard of.  Have I managed to age myself enough?

So I learned a couple of things this weekend…

1. Entertaining Maya for 2 days is a piece of cake when she spends most of the time at her grandparent’s house.
2. There is no need to stress too much over eating out. Sure my stomach hurt a bit last night but sometimes a great day out is worth the pain.

Back to the Park

March 19, 2010

The weather in L.A. has been so nice that Maya and I have been hitting up the park every day after school. It’s a win-win situation for all involved…she is entertained for at least an hour with minimal effort by me, and we both get some much-needed fresh air.

This week I decided to change things up by going to a park closer to home. The “new” park is better because they have more seating (imperative), it is cleaner (I haven’t seen any dirty socks lying around), and parking is better (always a plus in L.A.).  But it still has its share of scary park moms, bratty kids in designer outfits, and something else I haven’t seen at the other park…paparazzi.

Maya and I were swinging on an enormous tire swing, just minding our own business, when all of a sudden we saw a man with a long-lens camera approach. Before I could wonder what he was doing, 5 more men with cameras appeared out of nowhere and started flashing away. Not even seconds later, there were 10 men taking pictures!

So I started looking around the nearly empty park (it was 5:30), trying to figure out who on earth they were taking pictures of, but I couldn’t find anybody out of the ordinary! Annoying kid stealing another annoying kid’s shovel? Check. Gorgeous mom in a very un-park like dress? Check. Baby having a meltdown over a fallen Ritz cracker?  Check.  An abundance of nannies? Check. Check. Check.

I was scanning away, not noticing anybody worthy of a swarm of paparazzi when all of a sudden I saw this little blonde girl playing in the sand a few feet away from us.  So I look a little closer, and sitting next to her on the floor was someone who looked a little bit like Jessica Alba.

Today I Googled “Jessica Alba at the park,” found a whole bunch of pictures of their afternoon…

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/tvshowbiz/article-1258838/Jessica-Alba-treats-sweet-angel-Honor-Marie-trip-park-charity-trip.html

…and confirmed that it was in fact Jessica Alba.  The weird thing was that in person she looked so young and normal!  Had there not been a bunch of people taking her picture, I wouldn’t have even noticed her.

You can barely see them, but I took a picture of the paparazzi from my iPhone when Maya and I were leaving.  By that time there were only a few photographers left and they seemed irritated that I was taking their picture.

A tiny bit ironic, yes?

I actually felt kind of sad that Jessica Alba couldn’t even go to the park without attracting a ton of attention.  I especially felt kind of sorry for her little girl.  I mean, I am guilty of looking at people.com as much as the next person, but who really wants to see pictures of a celebrity at the park?

What are your thoughts?

Random Concoctions

March 18, 2010

Being that I am an almost-vegetarian I’m not sure why I keep pushing Maya to eat meat.  Maybe because I don’t want her to be anemic like me.  Or maybe because I want to feed her as much protein as I can because I am tired of people asking me why she is so thin.  Or maybe because I don’t want people to think that as an almost-vegetarian I won’t let her eat meat.

The only thing that one can extract from the above paragraph is that I need counseling to figure out why I think I need to justify why I think Maya should eat meat.  And now that we are all suitably confused, I’ll just move on…

Maya won’t eat meat unless it comes in a nugget form, and since I obviously won’t allow my child to eat deep fried carcinogens it goes without saying that Maya doesn’t eat much meat!  So on the rare occasion she asks me to make her “Red Chicken,” I get off my lazy behind and oblige her.

Despite the unappealing and completely deceptive name Maya has given this dish, it is the easiest recipe in the world:

Red Chicken (There is no chicken in this meal but I can only correct Maya so many times before I throw in the towel)

1/2 pound of ground turkey
1/2 cup of tomato sauce (I use Ralph’s organic brand which Ali and I agree is the best jarred sauce we’ve tasted.  Ali and I don’t agree often so trust us on this one).
1 teaspoon ground cumin
1 teaspoon ground coriander
1 tablespoon olive oil

Heat the olive oil and add the ground turkey. When the turkey is browned, add the tomato sauce, sprinkle the spices evenly, and mix well.

After making the “Red Chicken” I was suddenly inspired to make a vegetarian dish to go along with it.  Truth be told, I visually needed to see some green foods on the dinner table so I could pretend I served my family a well balanced meal.  So after considering the contents of our nearly empty fridge, I dug deep into our freezer, found a bag of frozen peas and broccoli, and came up with this:

Indian-ish Peas and Broccoli

3/4 cup of frozen peas
1 cup of defrosted broccoli
1/2 of an onion, chopped
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon turmeric

Heat the olive oil until super hot, add the mustard and cumin seeds. Stir until the mustard seeds start to pop. Add the turmeric and stir well. Turn the heat to medium and add the onion. Stir until the onions are soft, and then add the defrosted broccoli and the frozen peas. Stir until everything is well combined, turn the heat off and cover so the peas defrost.

A chopped tomato would have been a fabulous addition to this delicious dish, but since I was pretty surprised to find an onion in my bare bones kitchen, I knew that finding a tomato would have been sheer madness.

Right after I finished cooking dinner, my father-in-law came over for a surprise visit.  I can count on my right hand how many times he’s eaten something I’ve cooked, so I was speechless when he took me up on my offer to have dinner with us.  Truth be told, I can’t say I blame him for being a bit timid around my cooking…you would too if you saw some of the random things that have come out of my kitchen.

I didn’t get any compliments from Ali, his dad, or Maya, but I didn’t get any complaints either.  And in the Din household, where every sentence usually includes at least one complaint, no complaints = success in my book.
