clueless comments x 3

May 8, 2013

On Friday afternoon I did something completely out of the ordinary: I made an effort.

This translated to me putting in my contacts and wearing something other than black. I also changed my earrings, broke out the straightening iron, and even contemplated make up!

(Didn’t follow through with that one but I believe contemplation deserves recognition.)

I did all of this because I figured that instead of defrosting Trader Joe’s Turkey Meatballs or ordering takeout, we might actually go out for dinner. On a Friday night no less!

So after taking Maya to the doctor and Target, after a dropping off books at the library and then picking up milk, Maya and I returned home, excited about the endless possibilities for a dinner beyond my sad repertoire of pasta and omelets.

Since I didn't eat out this weekend (due to bad hair) I have no good food pictures. I have this random one instead!

Since I didn’t eat out this weekend (due to bad hair) I have no good food pictures. I have this random one instead!

But then, this:

Ali – Clueless Comment #1: “Your hair looks really dry.”

Me, in my head: How does one respond to this?

Ali – Clueless Comment #2: “It looks like it might break any second.”

Me, in my head: Why thank you Ali. Nothing like a compliment to kick off my Friday evening.

Ali – Clueless Comment #3: “I think you need a better conditioner or something.”

To be honest, I wasn’t really offended as I know this is Ali trying to be “helpful.” Still, I put my glasses back on, took my diamond hoops off, and thanked my lucky stars I wasn’t dumb enough to put on makeup hours earlier. And then I said: “So are you picking up CPK or Cheesecake Factory for dinner tonight?”

And then immediately after that? I made the soonest Japanese straightening appointment I could get.

Awww, you make such an adorable family Ameena.
Iam blessed with the messy sort of hair too. My straightening is ‘coming-off’ and I have already been asked in the past week, if I was having a bad hair day?
    So–I can totally relate! 🙂

    • May 8, 2013 4:46 pm

Mine lasts for about 5-6 months and then literally it becomes unmanageable, overnight!

Do you do the Japanese or Brazilian straightening?

Omg I did the Japanese straightening thing a few years ago! It was soooo nice while it lasted….I never had to blow dry!

    • May 8, 2013 4:46 pm

That’s the best part…not having to blow dry. But then after 5-6 months it becomes kind of a disaster again…

      • May 8, 2013 5:37 pm

So hear you. Japanese addict and currently in disaster mode!

  3. May 8, 2013 2:55 am

You guys look great! Wish there were courses for husbands on the right things to say when they want to be helpful 🙂

  4. May 8, 2013 5:23 am

Wait, wait why couldn’t you go out with your allegedly dry hair? Or did you not really want to go out? It was the straightening that made my hair almost fall out/off.

    • May 8, 2013 4:47 pm

Really? I’ve done it for years…at least a decade I’d say? It’s been the best thing for my hair because it feels healthier (strange but true).

  5. May 8, 2013 5:48 am

Vishnu makes comments like that every now and then. I know he means absolutely no harm and I’m able to laugh them off pretty easily. However, like you, I go back and reassess the situation afterwards, whether it’s hair, makeup, clothes, etc.

    • May 8, 2013 4:47 pm

My problem is always the “reassessment” stage. I over think things…

  6. May 8, 2013 6:41 am

There is a fine line between trying to be helpful and being inadvertently unkind, and these comments get close to it! Ali’s lucky that yuu are patient and understanding. 🙂

    • May 8, 2013 4:48 pm

He gets close to that fine line daily. Good thing he’s a nice (albeit clueless) person otherwise I’d have given up a long time ago.

What was Ali talking about? Your hair *always* looks fabulous. He needs glasses!

    • May 8, 2013 4:49 pm

The truth is that I don’t always post pictures where my hair is kind of a mess….one of these days I’ll shock everyone with a truly bad hair day pic.

  8. May 8, 2013 7:50 am

Oh men and their unintentionally insensitive comments. And I agree with Lydia above, your hair really does always look fabulous on here!

    • May 8, 2013 4:49 pm

Thanks Liz…not sure I’m 100% honest about my pictures reflecting good and bad hair days though… 🙂

  9. May 8, 2013 8:39 am

Ali pays attention to your hair! My husband is completely oblivious to what I do to to my hair. Once I did a total makeover and chopped almost a foot of my hair…a foot….and he still did not notice.

PS: You have gorgeous hair and all your facebook pics are a testimony to that fact.

    • May 8, 2013 4:50 pm

Well he does and then he doesn’t pay attention. It’s really weird what he’ll notice and then what kind of slips by…

  10. May 8, 2013 8:47 am

Don’t listen to Ali! Your hair always looks great to me. Thick and healthy. Ha! I do notice that you wear a lot of black! I think it’s great to incorporate some brights. I realized I have mostly neutrals in my closet and I’m trying to mix things up with every new purchase.

    • May 8, 2013 4:51 pm

Somehow brights just look so bright on me…not sure what it is? Maybe I’m just accustomed to the dark colors now?

I think you look great in color, especially all jewel tones, and pinks/berries!

      • May 9, 2013 9:02 pm

That’s really nice of you to say. 🙂 Thank you.

  11. May 8, 2013 9:16 am

Aw! You should’ve gone out anyway! Just leave Ali at home next time. =D

  12. May 8, 2013 9:28 am

Its sad sad sad. I’ve read all your posts now (back to front) . I read them at night, while out riding my bike, at train station, health surgery, at checkouts, cafes, garden. I loved it. I was sad when I reached May 2013. It was brilliant seeing your posts on parenting, marriage, travels, High Tea, LA. I loved it. keep it up Ameena aziz. I’m your fan:)

    • May 8, 2013 4:52 pm

How sweet are you? I can’t believe you’ve read all of my old posts…hope some of them didn’t scare you away. When I read my old stuff I wonder what I was thinking? Some of it’s kind of terrible. 🙂

      Thanks for the comment Maha!

      • May 10, 2013 8:57 am

Your welcome Ameena. Your posts are very Ameena:), very different. It was a pleasure reading them. Looking forward to your next post. Oh and now I’m reading your favorite blogger, I’m so fancy:)

    • May 8, 2013 4:52 pm

I’ve never used a leave in conditioner…not sure why? Thanks for the link…I will definitely check it out!

  13. May 8, 2013 10:47 am

Thank goodness you didn’t put on makeup!!!! Seriously, at the end of the night when I realize I don’t have to wash my face because I am not wearing makeup, elation overcomes me.

I for one think that’s the sweetest picture, I love it!

Also we do sometimes forget about ourselves. I’ve been trying to take better care of myself so I booked myself a massage on Friday and just earlier today I scheduled a hair appt. 🙂

    • May 8, 2013 4:53 pm

I still wash my face (I’m OCD about it) but I am far less concerned about spending a lot of time on it when it’s make up free…which is 99% of the time. Or maybe even a little bit more.

A massage! Well deserved I’m sure. I hope you enjoy Marie!

  14. May 8, 2013 11:07 am

Un-clueless comment X1: Boys are dumb.

  15. May 8, 2013 1:14 pm

I like that he just kept going as if you didn’t truly understand the first comment. You gotta appreciate his resilience 🙂 Oh, and for the record, I think you have gorgeous hair!

    • May 8, 2013 4:54 pm

He is resilient! Good point Azmina.

And thanks for the compliment. 🙂

Lol! Once years ago Anthony told me I “look tired.” Like Ali, he probably thought he was coming from a helpful place, but the reaction (or major over-reaction) I gave him that day has resulted in an end to clueless comments about appearance from then on 😉

    • May 8, 2013 4:55 pm

The “I look tired” comment always confuses me. Especially when people throw it out at a party…I’m like, thanks I guess?

Ali doesn’t respond to reaction or over-reaction so I just let it go now….

I know really, at a party is the worst!

  17. May 8, 2013 5:40 pm

I understand perfectly the straightening dilemma. It does get to be a mess after awhile. Yet, it’s so nice when you first have it done, especially if it’s hot and humid. My hair’s an absolute disaster in humidity without straightening. It’s nice you can always count on Ali to say just the right thing! 🙂

    • May 9, 2013 9:02 pm

      I can’t go without it…it’s been a decade or so of going 2 X a year. I’m addicted!

      • May 10, 2013 7:38 am

I feel exactly the same Ameena, except I’ve only been doing it for 3 years now. I wish I had tried it decades ago!! 🙂

  18. May 8, 2013 7:50 pm

That’s clueless, but he’s kinda funny. I bet you laughed a little when he said that. 🙂 Such a beautiful family photo. I love CPK – the Mexican Pizza is the best.

    • May 9, 2013 9:03 pm

Not sure that I laughed but at least I didn’t cry. LOL

  19. May 9, 2013 2:56 am

Ahhh straight hair dilemmas- have the same issue. Gorgeous family pic!
By the way, what is CPK? I thought it was a typo for KFC

    • May 9, 2013 9:03 pm

CPK = California Pizza Kitchen. One of my favorite places here! It’s a chain.

      And thanks for the compliment.

  20. May 9, 2013 11:39 am

Oh bless you Ameena! I feel sorry for you at times even though most of the time I envy your adorable family. This was a definite ‘facepalm’ moment for Ali though! Oh my goodness! :-/

  21. May 9, 2013 1:11 pm

These guys really are lucky that we love them when they come out with comments like this. Boy, did you deserve a night out after that!!

    • May 9, 2013 9:04 pm

A night out…or a really nice vacation. I’m hoping for the latter. 🙂

  22. May 9, 2013 5:15 pm

The only time my hair looks good is coming from my hair gal. Other than that it’s a wavy mess. I even go out in public like that b/c I can’t take the time to blow it out. Others just have to live with that!

    • May 9, 2013 9:04 pm

I am incapable of properly using a blow dryer…that’s why permanent straightening is the only way for me!

  23. May 9, 2013 10:10 pm

Haha guys have no tact AT ALL! But hey if you’re going to have to hear these comments, better it comes from your hubby than an outsider right! I bet your hair is looking great after your appt…nothing like a trip to the hair salon to make me feel infinitely better (even when the rest of my appearance is not up to mark)!

    • May 10, 2013 5:19 am

My appointment is this afternoon! I can’t wait. 🙂

  24. May 10, 2013 11:54 am

haha what a helpful husband you have. 🙂

  25. May 12, 2013 7:30 am

🙂 You guys look great. Happy Mother’s Day!

    • May 14, 2013 8:16 pm

Thank you Ayala! I hope you had a nice Mother’s Day as well.

  26. May 14, 2013 8:10 am

your hair looks great Ameena but making a trip to hair salon is always exciting 🙂

    • May 14, 2013 8:17 pm

Thanks Dixya…I need a whole lot of trips to the hair salon. 🙂

  27. May 15, 2013 12:06 pm

It’s a good thing your husband is considerate enough to make inconsiderate remarks so that we have something to chuckle over. You look divine as always, of course. 🙂

  28. June 21, 2013 6:00 am

Argh I hate it when husbands say the stupidest things! I tried this awful retinoid cream a few months back and it reacted badly and left a rash. Now the rash is gone and a faint dark spot remains. The other night when we were reading before bed, my husband looks at me and says ‘hmmm…you didn’t have to use that weird expensive cream you know. It’s actually made your skin worse.’ And I didn’t even ask.

    • June 21, 2013 10:52 am

Sounds exactly like something Ali would say!

So sorry about the cream. 😦

  29. July 25, 2013 3:07 pm

Oh whew, I thought you said you couldn’t get Japanese straightening anymore! What a relief!

    • July 26, 2013 12:49 am

But I can’t! I really have to find a good Brazilian straightening person here in NY…
