the orange jacket

May 29, 2012

Me, about 4 weeks ago: “What do you want to do for Memorial Day weekend?”
Ali: “Let’s go somewhere.”
Me: “New York?”
Ali: “That might be too far.”
Me: “Las Vegas?”
Ali: “I’m open.”

Here is one situation where I appreciate Ali’s indifference because he knows that I like to be in charge of where we go, where we stay, what flight we take, and pretty much everything else. But I didn’t have a free second to plan a trip anywhere, until last week when airfares were bordering on the absurd.

So instead of paying $458 for a round-trip one hour flight to Las Vegas, Ali and I decided to spend the weekend making progress on our (read: my) to-do list.

My husband also found the Mother Ship at Urban Home and for a quick second I couldn’t find him. Who knew that a bright orange jacket could also be a source of camouflage?

Translation: not a whole lot happened this weekend except that I busted my ass catching up on everything while Ali ate a giant steak, an entire Pizookie with ice cream, a molten chocolate cake, and then he enjoyed watching scantily clad women prancing around on American Wedding and then The Change-Up.

Yeah. I’m not sure about you but I’m ready to go back to work.

Hahaha!!! That was hilarious. BTW I loved that store. There are so many wonderful props that I can easily get lost in there 🙂

  2. May 29, 2012 12:29 am

    Love the camouflage!!

  3. May 29, 2012 12:46 am

so. much. orange! Hope you managed to relax a little this weekend Ameena 😉

  4. May 29, 2012 3:26 am

“Ali ate a giant steak, an entire Pizookie with ice cream, a molten chocolate cake”…. It’s like you’re showing me a heaven, and I’m standing behind the locked glass door just looking. My husband is the same, can eat anything, and not gain a pound. I’m not upset about it, I love exercises and broccoli (note: these words are full of sarcasm).

    • May 29, 2012 7:39 pm

No need to point out the sarcasm…I hear you!! I feel your pain.

  5. May 29, 2012 3:44 am

This is just hysterical. The photo is the best…the Mother Ship and orange camouflage!!! You always make me laugh, Ameena!!

  6. May 29, 2012 4:09 am

At least it wasn’t a floral print, right?

    • May 29, 2012 7:41 pm

Very good point. If Ali was camouflaged in a sea of flowers I’d need to take a serious look at his closet!

  7. May 29, 2012 4:49 am

    That photo is hilarious!

  8. May 29, 2012 4:53 am

Definitely not ready to go back to work, but take solace that it’s only a 4-day work week. Btw, I laughed out loud at the orange camouflage.

    • May 29, 2012 7:41 pm

Sometimes being at work is SO much easier than handling Ali and Maya. 🙂

  9. May 29, 2012 5:10 am

“Look at all the things pretty”…that’s my caption for him.

    • May 29, 2012 7:42 pm

Not sure if he thought anything was pretty…he was mesmerized by the orange!

  10. May 29, 2012 5:55 am

Orange is a popular color 🙂
    Oh come on…work 😉
    Have a great day lady!

    Katie

  11. May 29, 2012 6:07 am

Ali looks like he belongs there, between all the orangeness. Have a great day!!

  12. May 29, 2012 6:26 am

why am i laughing so hard at that photo. sounds like a productive weekend!

    • May 29, 2012 7:45 pm

It was productive…not as much as I’d hoped but it was enough. 🙂

  13. May 29, 2012 6:29 am

    ““`OMggggggg,
what a great shot of Ali and the orange dishes! He is blending beautifully. xx

  14. May 29, 2012 6:36 am

But on the plus side you saved a lot of $$ by not going anywhere that can be put towards an even more extravagant future holiday! Oh and loving the orange on Ali- personally not a colour I’ve ever been able to pull off but it definitely suits him…and that dining ware

    • May 29, 2012 7:46 pm

I can’t pull off orange either. I feel like a pumpkin?

  15. May 29, 2012 7:03 am

Sometimes just the idea of getting away exhausts me!
Ali is also matching the green plates against the far wall. Nicely done!

    • May 29, 2012 7:46 pm

Good point about the green plates…I’d missed that one!

  16. May 29, 2012 8:13 am

    That picture is fantastic!
I’m pretty sure long weekends have just become an excuse to try and get everything done that there’s no time for regularly. It kind of sucks.

    • May 29, 2012 7:47 pm

Exactly. There is quite a bit of catch up involved and very little relaxation!! I think we need 4 days to really appreciate a long weekend.

  17. May 29, 2012 8:44 am

You couldn’t find him because he was blending in with the plate display! 🙂 Hope you guys had a good long weekend!

  18. May 29, 2012 9:42 am

this is HILARIOUS! he blends in so well with all the other orange. I love Vegas.. only been there once, but all those restaurants and shows and clubs excite me. Hope you had a great long weekend… I didn’t go anywhere except stay home and entertain my friends and family. 🙂

    • May 29, 2012 7:48 pm

I love Vegas too but for some reason the 1 hour flight can be so absurdly expensive! It’s been a while though, I hope to get back there soon!

  19. May 29, 2012 10:09 am

This is my favorite Ali picture. No contest. Hands down. *Insert other cliche statements here*

I wasn’t ready to go back to work, but I’m glad someone was!
    Have a great week. 🙂

    • May 29, 2012 7:49 pm

I am all about cliche statements. I love it!

Hope your day wasn’t too painful. 🙂

  20. May 29, 2012 10:14 am

I’m so glad he enjoyed himself catching up on your to-do list. I know my husband loves catching up on my to-do list.

  21. May 29, 2012 10:18 am

I could see a Ali’s head and legs only. Where us his body??? Lol! Have a wonderful week my friend.

    • May 29, 2012 7:50 pm

Thanks Quay Po…I hope you have a great week as well!

  22. May 29, 2012 1:24 pm

That jacket may camouflage him in the store but it would totally keep him from getting accidentally shot while hunting. So maybe he needs to take that up as a hobby? I mean, when in Rome, right?

    • May 29, 2012 7:51 pm

Ali hunting? Now that’s an interesting visual. He couldn’t put our sick goldfish to sleep so I have a feeling he’d fail miserably at hunting.

Which, as a mostly vegetarian, I am okay with!! 🙂

  23. May 29, 2012 1:28 pm

Airfare is absolutely absurd these days. You will make it to Vegas another time I’m sure. Love it how he matches the plates. Couldn’t have planned it better. My weekend was great. I kind of love NOT going anywhere.

    • May 29, 2012 7:51 pm

It is nice to just stick around town and hang out sometimes, isn’t it?

  24. May 29, 2012 3:27 pm

What a VACATION from routine….and I agree with the sentiment that sometimes instead of GOING we need to ARRIVE somewhere…now, what items were on your to do list? (I’ve been dreaming of doing my closet!)

    • May 29, 2012 7:53 pm

I was supposed to catch up on work, water the plans (it really was on a list!), go to the grocery store, buy a new pair of black pants, hit up the dry cleaners, research new bedroom furniture, buy a few gifts, go through Maya’s clothes to give away what she’s outgrown, etc. etc.

      It was a long list!

  25. May 29, 2012 3:50 pm

I didn’t know Ali is so fond of orange color (though I remember his fave orange cashmere sweater). Long weekend always exhausts me, I usually feel like I need a vacation from long vacation…

  26. May 29, 2012 6:20 pm

you are too funny- loved the camoflauge pic!!!! ha ha!!! Yes, I have also found when hubby and I decide to stay in to ‘work on things’ NOTHING gets accomplished! 🙂

    • May 29, 2012 7:55 pm

Probably because your hubby has a similar to do list…watch TV, eat, watch TV, eat. 🙂

  27. May 29, 2012 6:47 pm

Orange you glad the weekend’s over?

    I know… I know… I just had to.

    • May 29, 2012 7:55 pm

I’m just surprised nobody wrote this earlier! Love it.

  28. May 30, 2012 3:18 am

So sorry you didn’t come to NYC but it was hot as hell if that makes you feel better. I’m with Ali, I love orange too. He could come work at Foodtrainers, he dresses our brand.

  29. May 30, 2012 6:53 am

I am so proud of you using your phones camera at the right moment! It sure was a Kodak Moment 🙂

    • May 30, 2012 8:30 pm

Yes, for a change I actually had the phone in my hand! Instead of in the depths of my purse. 🙂

  30. May 30, 2012 8:56 am

They should pass out homing beacons that wives attach to husbands at places like that. Also, at large home improvement stores. Actually, in general husbands should be fitted with homing beacons. That way you’ll know if they are up to no good.

    • May 30, 2012 1:48 pm

I agree! My fiance gets lost at Target allllll the time. Now when we go I say stay with me every 10 ft until I realize it sounds like I’m talking to a 3-year old.

    • May 30, 2012 8:31 pm

“Stay with me.” So funny. I say that to Maya all the time! Never to Ali. LOL

I avoid going into any store he could get lost it. Like Best Buy.

  31. May 30, 2012 11:46 am

Haha! I love it. Thanks for sharing, sweet girl. I can relate! I hope you guys are doing well. I’m glad I’m back in the blogging world. I’ve missed your hilarious posts!

    • May 30, 2012 8:31 pm

Hi Monet! Hope your trip to Paris was fantastic! Thanks for the comment.

  32. May 30, 2012 1:48 pm

    The orange picture is PRICELESS!

  33. May 30, 2012 2:10 pm

An orange mothership in Urban Home! Love that photo 🙂 Did you buy anything orange at all to go with his orange wardrobe (I seem to remember that he also had some orange sweater of his moving around by itself)?

    • May 30, 2012 8:32 pm

Good memory…yes Ali is into orange these days! He says it’s the new pink!

  34. May 30, 2012 3:56 pm

Catching up on my to do list is my favorite way to spend a weekend, especially if Glenn is around because he is so handy and efficient. Great photo. What’d you get?

    • May 30, 2012 8:33 pm

If only Ali was handy and/or efficient. But unless it’s technology-related I think it’s safe to say he’s not. 🙂

I didn’t buy a thing at Urban Home. I was looking for a bench but they didn’t have it in stock!

Ohmigod. Ameena, I DIED when I saw that snap. DIED, I tell you.

I will be honest, I had never heard of a Pizookie until you shared it with the masses just now. I am 100% positive that it is everything that is wrong with America. And yet I would have probably watched Ali devour it in a state of fascination.

    • May 30, 2012 8:34 pm

Pizookie’s are unbelievably wrong. Which goes for most of BJ’s menu! But really, it’s so unbelievably tempting that one can’t help but have a bite or two…

  36. May 30, 2012 10:54 pm

Can’t wait to see what you decide to do for Father’s Day…! And what will Ali wear? 🙂

    • June 1, 2012 8:35 am

I haven’t even thought about Father’s Day. 🙂 So happy for the reminder Rufina!

  37. May 31, 2012 5:48 pm

The camouflage is absolutely priceless! That looks like the kind of store I could get completely immersed in and, most likely, come out spending as much money as that round trip ticket to Vegas. :)~

    • June 1, 2012 8:35 am

Yes, Urban Home is addicting but luckily it’s also affordable!

  38. May 31, 2012 7:05 pm

    That is a great photo!

Wow, that is Aton of orange! Hilarious, I tell you, you get the best photos. I would imagine your getting things for your room redo? Hope you had some luck. My husband came to the hospital the other day and when I came out of the restroom he was reading your blog…he looks at me and says, “have you read this?”. To which I responded “of course I have.”. As he’s cracking up he’s saying, “please advise…that’s awesome”. He was reiterating Ali’s words off the text. My husband is very manly but also so girly, he loves reading the blogs I read. :). Thank you for your thoughts on my comment section, you girls are great, I love the friendship we have made. Take care,

    Shauna

    • June 1, 2012 8:37 am

My room still looks hideous. I have made NO progress!

I love that your husband reads my blog! I often wonder if there are many male readers out there. 🙂

I also love our friendship! I’ve “met” some of my best friends on the Internet, crazy as that sounds…

  40. June 1, 2012 2:41 pm

Okay, I applaud the fact that not only those earphones at park but Ali can also carry an orange-green combination with confidence 😀 😀 😀
How do you always end up taking pictures at the right moment?! Haha. Perfect.

    • June 1, 2012 9:26 pm

When I’m around Ali I usually have my camera ready, knowing that he’ll do something absurd. 🙂

  41. June 1, 2012 6:43 pm

Oooooh, I like the orange dishes!!!

  42. June 5, 2012 12:34 pm

I love the sea of orange! Think about how many dishes you could buy with the money you saved from the airfare!

We didn’t go anywhere either. And our long weekend involved bright clothes and shops too. Wish we lived closer Ameena 😦

    • June 8, 2012 8:46 am

I wish we lived closer too! I’m sure we’ll meet up at some point though. It’s inevitable!
