LMFAO

May 22, 2012

As I write this, my 7-year-old is sitting in the living room with Ali’s laptop, unsupervised.

As if that isn’t bad enough, she is listening to LMFAO’s “I’m Sexy and I Know It” on Spotify.

Every ounce of me knows I should:

  • Run over and shut the song off.
  • Give Maya a lecture on how certain songs are for big people only.
  • Make Maya repeat, “I will never say the word “sexy” at school. It’s not a word for kids.”
  • Ask her why she has time to listen to trashy songs but no time to memorize her flipping subtraction flashcards.
  • Give Ali a lecture about leaving Maya on the Internet unsupervised.
  • Conduct a Q & A for the benefit of both my husband and child on the dangers of Internet predators.
  • Spend some time feeling guilty that 90% of my day is spent nagging everybody around me.

Make no mistake, all of the above will eventually happen.

But right now I just really want to listen to the song.

ha ha!!!!! Forever love your blog- you make me laugh!

  2. May 22, 2012 1:50 am

Haha It is a pretty catchy song. On the up side there are far worse things Maya could be looking at/listening to on the internet.

Sorry if that sounds really ominous/creepy, I meant it more as a “silver lining” kind of thing!

    • May 22, 2012 1:32 pm

Not creepy at all! This is SO true. And all joking aside, we really need to be more diligent about her computer time.

  3. May 22, 2012 3:44 am

My 3 year old inadvertently saw that video too and now he shakes his…well…little guy junk.
    I blame Barbra Walters.

    • May 22, 2012 1:32 pm

Barbra Walters? So curious how she and LMFAO could be related?

  4. May 22, 2012 4:09 am

I love the last line of this post!

  5. May 22, 2012 4:45 am

I suppose I should ask if you had to explain what LMFAO means?!? 😉

    • May 22, 2012 1:36 pm

Luckily she didn’t seem to notice. But if she had I would have made something up!

  6. May 22, 2012 4:53 am

My best friends children who are 5 and 3 LOVE this song.. It’s just the way the world is these days – they’re going to hear the song. Might as well dance with them 😉

    • May 22, 2012 1:37 pm

So true. Not much we can do to stop kids from hearing bad songs…even if they aren’t at hearing them at home!

  7. May 22, 2012 5:03 am

Hilarious 😀 Your blog is always so honest and I love that!

  8. May 22, 2012 5:07 am

Do you remember when Anna Nicole Smith did the TV ads for Trim Spa? “Do you like my booodyyy?!” My friend’s daughter was maybe 3 and she would run her finger from her head to her toe, sass that little hand up onto her hip and , ” do you like my boooodyy?!” It was hilarious and completely mortifying all at once.

    • May 22, 2012 1:38 pm

      Mortifying…terrifying…hilarious. Wow. I can’t even imagine!

  9. May 22, 2012 5:13 am

Can’t tell you how glad I am that my parenting days are over!

  10. May 22, 2012 6:05 am

he he he… I’ve seen so many kids rock out to that song. I really think it’s the beat that draws everyone in. And they lyrics an afterthought.

Or at least that’s what I’m telling myself…

    • May 22, 2012 1:41 pm

I kind of agree here…it’s totally the beat. Especially since Maya has no idea what she’s singing.

  11. May 22, 2012 6:34 am

Kids LOVE LMFAO…. I don’t totally get it! I can only imagine the songs that will be streaming once I have kids. good God!

    • May 22, 2012 1:42 pm

I know. The radio is only getting more liberal with the sketchy words!!

  12. May 22, 2012 6:41 am

I think the possibility of Maya repeating “I’ve got passion in my pants and I ain’t afraid to show it” is a greater risk that “I’m sexy and I know it”.

    • May 22, 2012 1:43 pm

Oh my. I am totally stunned right now. Is that what they actually say in that song? I had no idea!!

  13. May 22, 2012 7:49 am

I will remember the magical properties of this song on a day when the little man is being too fussy! 🙂

  14. May 22, 2012 8:37 am

    lol.
    you are a good mom.
i don’t know if you listen to Bollywood, but it surprises me when i see little kids sing/dance ‘sheila ki jawani’ and the likes and the parents cheer.

    • May 22, 2012 1:43 pm

I don’t listen to Bollywood…and I need a translation please! Or maybe I can ask Ali. So curious now!

      • May 23, 2012 10:42 am

I’ll let Ali translate the song for you 😀
It’s a really silly song but was a super hit, lemme tell ya.

  15. May 22, 2012 8:46 am

Lol Who doesn’t love that song. Indeed, it’s not appropriate for Maya be singing any LMFAO at school. Good luck with navigating, how to deal with that one. I hope she never finds out what the groups name means. Oii!!

    • May 22, 2012 1:44 pm

Yeah…the group’s name poses a whole other set up problems. 🙂

  16. May 22, 2012 9:01 am

AARRGGHH!!!! That is my kids favorite song. Why do all the catchy radio songs have to be so completely innapropriate?

    • May 22, 2012 1:44 pm

Not that this makes you feel any better…but at least it’s not just my kid. 🙂

  17. May 22, 2012 9:03 am

hahaha… as soon as I saw the girl’s stomach, I knew what the post was about since I have that song on my iPhone. I wonder what goes on in a 7 year old’s head when they listen to that song. More than the words, she prolly just loves the beat. You’re funny Ameena.. the song is pretty good!
    🙂

    • May 22, 2012 1:45 pm

I think it’s just the beat too…Maya has no idea what she’s singing. Yet!

  18. May 22, 2012 9:40 am

    LMFAO 😉

Dudette came home from school singing that one day. I was going to talk to her about it until I listened a bit more closely. She was singing, “I’m sixty and I know it.” I let her be. I did find out that she learned it from one of her older friends on the bus. Yeah, talk to Maya. 🙂

    • May 22, 2012 1:46 pm

“I’m sixty…” Too funny. I should have told Maya THAT was what LMFAO is singing…

  22. May 22, 2012 10:23 am

Hahahaha. This post totally reminded me of the time I was in the car with my aunt and cousin (he was 9 at the time). Usher’s new song came on the radio, and he knew EVERY SINGLE word. Of course, he didn’t understand what he was singing, but it cracked me up. I felt bad though because my otherwise naive aunt yelled at him because I laughed. Oops! 🙂

    • May 22, 2012 1:47 pm

Maya loves Usher! Not sure why seeing as I’m not a big fan of his…maybe he’s just more popular with the kids? 🙂

  23. May 22, 2012 12:17 pm

i have to agree, it is a cool song. I am on youtube right now listening to it.

  24. May 22, 2012 12:49 pm

    LOL. best mom ever haha

  25. May 22, 2012 1:24 pm

At least it’s not that “Milkshake” song (by Kelis). The implications are far worse. If she asks you to buy her Day-Glo spandex, though, say NO.

    • May 22, 2012 1:47 pm

The Milkshake song just grosses me out. And that video? My God. It’s just wrong.

  26. May 22, 2012 1:44 pm

Just goes to show the power of a catchy beat. I wonder if her friends at school turned her on to that? If so, I’d blame their parents. Clearly you are guilt free in this situation. Time for Ali to install those parental controls…

    • May 22, 2012 1:48 pm

Parental controls are brilliant. I am going to ask Ali to get on it!!

  27. May 22, 2012 1:46 pm

I remember the days when my mom wasn’t fond of me listening to Britney Spears just because of her image and everything…but songs back then were def. not as provocative as they are now!

    • May 22, 2012 1:48 pm

For me it was Madonna. And now I feel 5 X older than you!

  28. May 22, 2012 1:50 pm

It’s a funny, funny song. And a funny video to go with it.

  29. May 22, 2012 2:22 pm

I know exactly how you feel. My 3year old loves this oooh la la number from the movie dirty picture. There times when I just want to shut the song off and at the same time I want to listen to it as well. Can it get any weird than this???

  30. May 22, 2012 3:53 pm

haha oh Ameena, I just love you. You’re hilarious.

  31. May 22, 2012 5:43 pm

It’s my theme song…I am FAR from sexy but it’s turned into a joke. I’m so insecure…so everyone thinks its funny 😉

    • May 23, 2012 7:52 am

I’m so insecure too. Apparently it doesn’t get any easier with age?

Or maybe just a little bit.

  32. May 22, 2012 6:04 pm

    –Ameena,
okay, i love this song. i want to dance to it….
but we’ve been having Kindergarteners sing this @ school because they heard it
    on that M&M commercial.
    I was Appalled. Seriously.
I’m calling M&M to kick their asses.
    xx

    • May 23, 2012 7:52 am

      Funny that I haven’t heard/seen this M&M commercial yet. That’s why I LOVE my DVR. 🙂

  33. May 22, 2012 6:19 pm

Ha! My three-year-old niece sings “Rumor Has It” by Adele because of the catchy hook. That’s how songs get to us!

  34. May 22, 2012 10:06 pm

As long as she isn’t looking at the video that goes with it, with thrusting and jiggling male parts all over, I don’t think she’ll be scarred for life 😀 Until I hit puberty most of the “big people” songs just sailed right over my head. I remember my classmates in elementary school happily chirping, “Baby when the lights go out I’ll show you what it’s all about.” Never thought anything of it until I heard it again years later.

    • May 23, 2012 7:53 am

So far I’ve been able to shield Maya from videos…who knows how long I can keep that up? The kid knows the Internet like the back of her hand.

      Must instill parental controls!!

  35. May 22, 2012 10:27 pm

I have no television, and when in the car I listen to the Jazz station/books on CD/or CD’s. My mom says I am living under a rock and so does Marie. I sometimes think I am because I have never heard this, seen it or really knew anything about it. This isn’t how I’ve always been either, somehow I’ve become one of the most prude people I know. If you knew me before, well, I wasn’t so prude.

My son Kalen loves music. He sings a lot of fun music that I’ve heard here and there. I need to be better about this. This meaning, knowing what’s out there. Because I grew up with such an un-sheltered life, I see I am having a hard time balancing this for my own children. But, then again sometimes they do things, and I think, “these are homeschooled children.” Hahahaha. This is the kind of stuff I meant when I said in one of my comments that “parenting can be interesting.” Alright, after that tangent I’m going to sign off now. You crack me up as usual-talk soon and take care sweet woman!

    Shauna

    • May 23, 2012 7:57 am

I love Jazz. Maya can appreciate it too but despite me playing it she prefers her LMFAO. 🙂

And from one prude to another, it’s not such a bad thing to be.

You still get my utmost respect for homeschooling your children. Amazing.

  36. May 23, 2012 1:25 am

Hahah at least one thing’s for sure…if Maya knows what the words mean and if she actually sings it, there’s no risk of her having a low self-esteem! For what it’s worth, I grew up listening to Tupac thanks to having an older brother and I think I turned out pretty okay…although I should also add that the “F” word found its way into my vocabulary sooner than most of my friends ;)!

    • May 23, 2012 7:58 am

The worst I listened to was George Michael. Although I was very careful not to go around singing, “I Want Your Sex” in front of my parents. Or anyone!!

  37. May 23, 2012 3:11 am

I agree with Khushboo, it’s self esteem building, there are worse lyrics, right? Does she know what LMFAO stands for? In our house the current habit is Minecraft. It’s hard for me to buckle down on screen time, wouldn’t that be hypocritical?

    • May 23, 2012 7:59 am

Haven’t heard of Minecraft…it must be a boy thing? Video games I’m assuming?

  38. May 23, 2012 4:29 am

Reminds me of my dad who would sit and watch our Bollywood movies then lecture us on how we were wasting our time and corrupting ourselves.

    • May 23, 2012 8:00 am

My dad used the same lecture. For just about everything we did that didn’t somehow relate to studying. 🙂

  39. May 23, 2012 10:24 am

I turn the song on and my 8 year old says, “Je la connais!” (I know that one).

    (cross-eyed)

  40. May 23, 2012 11:18 am

The song is indeed very catchy. I don’t blame Maya, nor you:-) Sometimes you just can’t stop kids. I hope Maya doesn’t call her teacher “sexy”

The thing that annoys me about these types of songs is that they can be as explicit as they want, but as soon as they become mainstream, it’s suddenly “okay” to have them be in commercials, tv shows, whatever…and a lot of these are so accessible to kids! It just frustrates me…

  50. May 28, 2012 2:30 pm

That’s a pretty catchy song although I don’t like the lyrics…nowdays the songs have less meaning and more just a bunch of random bad words jumbled up together!

    • May 28, 2012 8:29 pm

So true! I think this song has no meaning at all. 🙂

  51. July 5, 2012 10:45 am

It is such a fun song!! Even though the lyrics are totally inappropriate for a child. If it makes you feel any better, 15-month old bounces up and down to the song. Well, at least he doesn’t understand the lyrics.
