burns

March 13, 2012

My name is Ameena…and I can’t stop burning my forehead with the curling iron.

I hope this huge close up of my sun-damaged, burned face doesn't scare you away...

Ali thinks this is hysterically funny. And I can’t blame him…I mean, what kind of idiot can’t keep a hot tool from touching her skin? If the shoe was on the other foot I’m sure that I’d be pointing fingers and laughing my a$$ off too.

What exactly is my problem? Well I have no coordination for starters. Plus I’m always in a rush when I’m battling my hair.

And in addition to being clumsy and in a rush, I’m usually testing Maya on her spelling words, telling Ali his clothes don’t match, and/or trying to read a book at the same time.

Anyway, last week after The Incident, I dusted off my Laura Mercier and cleverly covered up the damage. Except I wasn’t as deft as I thought with the concealer because a minute after I got to work someone asked me, “Did you burn yourself with a curling iron?”

So apparently I’m not just hopeless with the curling iron but with makeup too?

OUCH!!!!! sorry!!!! This is just a reminder to me of why I do NOT use a curling iron 🙂

    • March 13, 2012 2:26 pm

If only my frizzy hair would let me stop using a curling iron…

  2. March 13, 2012 12:47 am

Oh, man if I used a curling iron it would be trouble. I burn myself in the kitchen all the time.
    Neosporin is my friend…

    • March 13, 2012 2:27 pm

I’m a bit better in the kitchen but somehow I haven’t mastered how to take something out of the oven without burning my hands…even with pot holders!

  3. March 13, 2012 1:02 am

In the kitchen, we refer to you as a burner. I’ve only ever done that once, learnt my lesson and it seems to have not happened again since. 🙂 Hope you are alright, it looks like a nasty one.

  4. March 13, 2012 1:32 am

oh that happens to me everytime, only i burn my ears 😦 there ought to be a special user-guide or safety shield or something for people like us

    • March 13, 2012 2:28 pm

Oddly enough I haven’t burned my ears but it’s probably just a matter of time?

  5. March 13, 2012 2:12 am

Oh, my gosh, Ameena, that looks painful! I have done that but I haven’t used a curling irorn in a long time. It’s probably for the best! Hope it heals quickly. Be Careful!!

  6. March 13, 2012 2:25 am

I used to do this but got the hang of it. My niece on the other hand has burns on both ears.

So you’re not the only one… One way of dealing with it is getting a fringe 😉

    • March 13, 2012 2:29 pm

I would love to get fringe (bangs?) but my hair just won’t lay flat in the front!

  7. March 13, 2012 2:29 am

I have done that as well a few times. Its hard to cover up burns. Instead, do the side sweep with your hair – part on the side and forward a little and then tuck it behind the other ear. voila! http://www.totalbeauty.com/content/gallery/p-side-swept-hairstyles/p43342/page11 – just part more deeply on the side.
    Kiran

    • March 13, 2012 2:29 pm

This is a good idea Kiran! I wonder if I can make my hair stay in place though…I will try it!

Hmm that is bad , thank god I dont have ot use that curling iron 🙂 phewwwwwww

well you said it .. RUSHING is bad 🙂 take care next time

    • March 13, 2012 2:30 pm

I’d be a bit concerned if you were using a curling iron. 🙂

  9. March 13, 2012 3:27 am

There-in is a business idea – why don’t you or someone else come up with a anti-burn curling iron?

    Or

Can you not sue the manufacturing for burning you skin?

    • March 13, 2012 2:31 pm

I think this is kind of like the whole, “I didn’t realize coffee was hot – I’m going to sue Starbucks (or McDonald’s?).”

I fear the judge will throw me out on my you-know-what!

  10. March 13, 2012 3:52 am

I still burn my neck from time to time with my curling iron. Then the hickie jokes come. It’s great.

    Thank goodness for makeup. 🙂

    • March 13, 2012 2:31 pm

I guess that you actually know how to apply makeup though? Apparently I do not!

  11. March 13, 2012 3:59 am

Aww.. poor you. Be well! And umm, curling irons are always annoying. I’m with you there!

  12. March 13, 2012 4:10 am

I know the feeling. i stopped using mine because I always burnt my ears! Not a problem if you have long hair – apart from pain. But fashion and beauty is all about the pain, isn’t it? But with short hair those burn blisters were very unattractive. GG

    • March 13, 2012 2:32 pm

Even with long hair the burn blisters are very unattractive! I’m living it right now. 🙂

  13. March 13, 2012 4:52 am

OUCH!!! So sorry about that Ameena. Even I am very clumsy. Even though I do not use the curling Iron, I burn my hands every now and then in the kitchen.

    • March 13, 2012 2:32 pm

Ditto. The oven specifically poses a problem for me. Not sure why?

  14. March 13, 2012 5:28 am

I’ve so been there. I regularly scratch my temple with the prongs of my blow dryer diffuser. It actually took me a while to figure out where the mystery marks were coming from. Hope it starts to feel better soon!

    • March 13, 2012 2:33 pm

Not sure what a diffuser does but I’m glad that I haven’t experienced that pain. Yet!

  15. March 13, 2012 5:36 am

Ouch, sorry about that. That’s why I gave up on curling iron long time ago. I just never get the hang of it plus I also don’t have enough time to do it, especially in the morning with my kids & husband trying to grab my attention. Sigh…
    Hope it feels better soon.

    • March 13, 2012 2:33 pm

I don’t have time for it either! And yet my hair won’t allow me to give up on the curling iron…

  16. March 13, 2012 5:41 am

I once burnt my ear if that is any consolation 🙂

    • March 13, 2012 2:34 pm

I definitely feel better knowing that other (smarter) people have the same problem!

  17. March 13, 2012 6:10 am

aww you poor thing! I doubt you watch america’s next top model but one of the models got scorched with the curling iron by a stylist. I’m talking a huge welt on her cheek. I promise you, your burn looks nothing like it comparison.

(But i am chuckling to myself, only because you have such a great ability to do the same, and to make any story funny!)

    • March 13, 2012 2:34 pm

I do watch ANTM although I have to say that this season is just…odd. Not sure if I’ll bother watching any further.

Crazy burn on her cheek though! I couldn’t believe that happened in such a reputable salon.

  18. March 13, 2012 6:47 am

That looks painful! I think you need some bangs 🙂

    • March 13, 2012 2:35 pm

If only my crazy Indian hair would lie flat! I would love to have bangs.

  19. March 13, 2012 7:10 am

I’m sorry but I’m laughing here. Like, I thought that only happened to girls in Jr. High – as we all were experimenting with a burning hot tool millimeters from our skin.
    I shouldn’t laugh – but couldn’t help it 😛

    • March 13, 2012 2:35 pm

I don’t blame you for laughing! This is a very ridiculous issue to have at my age…

  20. March 13, 2012 7:11 am

I’ve had a scar on my forehead for years because I always burn myself with my curling iron. It seems like every time it heals enough that its barely noticeable, I just do it again.

  21. March 13, 2012 7:42 am

I hate curling iron burns. I’ve done that on my neck a few times and they are not fun.

    • March 13, 2012 2:36 pm

Luckily I haven’t had burns on my ears or neck yet…I guess it’s the long hair that saves me?

  22. March 13, 2012 7:45 am

awww.. i’m so scared of using a curling iron and flatiron, i just blowdry my hair straight, it takes longer. i’ve burnt myself a couple times using a curling iron – but man they make nice soft curls.. but maybe just for special occasions. you don’t wanna take your hair wavy? i bet it would look so pretty. I use Ouidad products, it’s designed for curly hair.. so it helps me tame my hair.

    • March 13, 2012 2:37 pm

I get the Japanese straightening done which is awesome. But then my hair looks a bit…severe. So I break out the curling iron to give it some texture.

I’ve never used Ouidad…I will definitely check them out!

  23. March 13, 2012 7:50 am

I am forever burning myself with my curling iron. Thank god for bangs to cover up the evidence.

  24. March 13, 2012 7:59 am

I’ve burned the top of my ear and my neck before. It’s impossible to cover it up! My teachers thought it was a hickey and teased me endlessly about it.

    • March 13, 2012 2:38 pm

Your teachers sound pretty progessive! Can’t say that mine would ever have joked about anything like that.

  25. March 13, 2012 8:06 am

This is why Ali needs to drop what he’s doing, call up American Express Concierge pronto, and order you a first-rate hair stylist that comes over every morning and does your hair for you, while a massage therapist (also ordered from American Express Concierge) rubs your feet and shoulders to prepare you for your day. Oh, and make sure Ali requests a hair stylist who can spell…that way Maya has her morning needs met as well.

    Just an idea…

    • March 13, 2012 2:39 pm

      I love your idea.

Wouldn’t have a hairstylist be the best thing in the world? I’m not sure if I’d prefer that or a personal chef though…

If only Amex could do this all and it wouldn’t cost an exorbitant amount! That would be fantastic.

  26. March 13, 2012 8:42 am

I have done this before, but it was on my neck. If you are in a rush, may I suggest that you use some sort of snap headband prior to using the iron. That way you will not burn your skin nor will you mess up your hair since the headband snaps off. Front and center burns are hard to hide. Thanks for stopping by my blog and have a great day!

    • March 13, 2012 2:40 pm

That’s a really good idea! I think I even have a headband that would probably work. Thank you for the suggestion!

  27. March 13, 2012 8:46 am

    OWIE!
    don’t do that!!!

don’t feel bad, I’ve done way worse things to myself like put a gash on my forhead from a shelf in the pantry because I was rifling thru the halloween candy….

    der.

    🙂

    • March 13, 2012 2:40 pm

      Ouch. That sounds really painful!!

What we’ll do for candy, right?

  28. March 13, 2012 8:48 am

You’re not alone. I’ve done that more times than I can count. I also have grabbed a HOT curling iron and subsequently had severe burns on my palm and had to explain the bandages for a week.

    • March 13, 2012 2:41 pm

I can’t even imagine that kind of pain. A tiny burn hurts…to have them covering your hands? I feel for you!

  29. March 13, 2012 9:06 am

So that’s the secret to your lustrous locks! The curling iron!

    • March 13, 2012 2:41 pm

Not sure my locks are lustrous but my secret is Japanese straightening every 6 months and then the curling iron here and there!

      • March 13, 2012 4:40 pm

Seriously, your hair is gorgeous. I’m only just learning to use a curling iron (and I’m not 16, so I don’t know what’s going on). I’m sure the burns will follow shortly.

  30. March 13, 2012 9:09 am

Funny you should post this! I have a small curling iron burn on the side of my head right now from yesterday. Hey, it happens. Mine is a little bit more obscure though! Those burns hurt too don’t they? Now you have to go through the scabbing up and then your skin is lighter for a while and then you will be back to your perty self.

    • March 13, 2012 2:42 pm

The one bonus of the burn? When the scab goes away the skin underneath is so perfect! I wish my whole face could look like that.

  31. March 13, 2012 9:13 am

I’m completely with Andrea. That is not a bad idea.

I love your hair! It’s so thick and beautiful and the color so rich. I rarely use a curling iron, maybe just for church so this isn’t usually my down fall area, but I’ll tell you what is….kitchen knives. And, I have really nice kitchen knives, that are sharp. I cannot tell you how many times I’ve had to pull out the super glue and attempt my own medical work on my fingers. And then one time it happened that the glue just wouldn’t hold because the gash was too deep, so I had to go the dumb ER and get two stitches in my middle finger…go figure. Haha.

See, that makes the curling iron situation not so bad.

Always looking forward to your posts!

    Have a great day Ameena.

    Shauna

    • March 13, 2012 7:46 pm

Wait…you utilized crazy glue to hold an injury together? Glue?

Anyway, I’m sure I’d have similar knife injuries if I actually used a knife! But for the most part I steer clear of kitchen utensils…

  32. March 13, 2012 9:57 am

I hope you are okay Ameena. That must hurt. It usually happens to me when I am ironing my clothes.
I had my worst burn back in India when I decided to wax my legs at home. So I put the wax in a glass bowl in the microwave and heated it. When I went to remove the bowl the bottom of the bowl gave way and the hot wax fell on my foot. It was the most painful experience ever. Lesson here for me was go to the salon.

    • March 13, 2012 7:47 pm

Oh my! I can’t say I’ve ever used hot wax and that’s probably a good thing! Razors present enough of a challenge for me…

  33. March 13, 2012 10:10 am

Ohh boy that looks painful! If it’s any consolation, I’ve burned both my arms and my right thigh with a straightener- whoever said ‘beauty is pain’ hit the nail on the head!

    • March 13, 2012 7:48 pm

I assume the straightener fell on you? I can’t imagine how painful that must have been!!

    March 13, 2012 10:40 am

Wait…you can straighten hair with a curling iron? I didnt know that.

And talking of burns, you know my room mate from grad school sat on a hot iron. Yes, her backside was burnt and yes she couldn’t sit down or sleep on her back for a very long time…i’m sure it was very painful for her but to me it was hilarious (i also didnt like her too much, that’s why!).

    • March 13, 2012 7:49 pm

How does one sit on an iron? I mean, it’s not exactly small?

Anyway, if you didn’t like her maybe she got what she deserved? 🙂

  35. March 13, 2012 11:09 am

Ouch! Hope you feel better soon:D

I have zero right hand -left hand co ordination. I am prone to such mishaps too.

    • March 13, 2012 7:50 pm

Thanks Anita! I am feeling much better already. 🙂

  36. March 13, 2012 11:49 am

Ouch. I remember the days of curling irons. I’m glad they’re over. Now I just burn other body parts on the oven or with hot pans. At least it’s up near your hairline. If I’d not known to look for it, I’d have never seen it (especially since I’m just 5’3″ and probably couldn’t see near the top of your head anyhow. 🙂

    • March 13, 2012 7:51 pm

I wish I was 5’3!” I’d love to be able to wear amazingly high shoes…

Anyway, since you cook and bake so much you should invest in a variety of pot holders and mitts!

  37. March 13, 2012 12:11 pm

Oh no lady! Feel better soon!

  38. March 13, 2012 12:13 pm

Ooh, curling iron burns are the worst. That’s why I stopped using them. Hope the discoloration has faded!

      • November 26, 2012 10:01 pm

You’ll be relieved to know it didn’t leave a scar! I hope that yours doesn’t either…

  39. March 13, 2012 1:35 pm

yeowch! i had a similar affliction when i was younger and thought it cool to dive in a 5 foot deep pool. i scraped the floor of the pool with my face and cut myself ‘bangs’ to cover the abraised forehead of mine. not sure what looked worse, the scabs or my new coif!

    • March 13, 2012 7:52 pm

I’m cringing just thinking of the pain you must have been in. Thank God nothing worse happened! Diving into a shallow pool is super dangerous…

  40. March 13, 2012 2:28 pm

Ouch. I can top it, well my sister can. When she was a teen she was sitting curling her hair and she dropped the iron and caught it between her legs. Yup, she burned her legs, it was just a reflex to catch it.

    • March 13, 2012 7:52 pm

      I just flinched thinking of that pain….your poor sister! I can’t imagine…

  41. March 13, 2012 4:47 pm

Your curling iron burn is my clothing iron burn. I have this thing about ironing in the nude. It makes perfect sense… I am ironing the clothes I am about to put on. Straight from the shower there is no sense in putting on clothes just to iron. Except my all this exposed skin = more surface area to burn. It happens. Maybe I should start putting on clothes.

    • March 13, 2012 7:54 pm

I avoid this problem altogether by not using the iron! Our dry cleaning bills are astronomical but at least I minimize my burns, right?

I’d definitely suggest wearing clothes while ironing Kristen!!

  42. March 13, 2012 5:06 pm

Oops. I was about to suggest to tape some paper or something over your ears, forehead, neck; wherever there’s a possibility of a burn. But I think someone commented above to use a headband, which sounds perfect to cover at least the areas closest to hair. Don’t know how this other person (another comment above) burnt thigh, ouch.
As for the oven, may be you need longer gloves? Not sure if they have those until the elbows though, hehe.
    Hope you’re doing good.

    • March 13, 2012 7:54 pm

I need gloves all the way up to my shoulders actually…I once burned my upper arm in the oven, if you can believe it!

  43. March 13, 2012 5:27 pm

    –Ameena,
This is precisely why I STOPPED using a freaking curling iron !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! xx

  44. March 13, 2012 9:26 pm

I have definitely burned myself with a curling iron, but always on the side or back of my head. Be careful!

    • March 14, 2012 6:55 am

I haven’t burned the back of my head yet…most likely because I’m usually too lazy to curl the back. 🙂

  45. March 14, 2012 3:03 am

Wait, do you curl your hair/is it curly? Or do you burn and then stop. I’m being serious. My tweezer is how I prefer to self mutilate.

    • March 14, 2012 6:56 am

My hair is a frizzy mess. Some straight parts, some curly. So I first do the permanent straightening and then curl parts here and there to give it some volume.

As far as tweezing goes…I leave that one to the pros as much as possible!

  46. March 14, 2012 5:11 am

  56. March 15, 2012 12:08 pm

I’m sure I would have been screaming in pain! So glad you are blessed with good hair so you don’t subject yourself to burns like me. 🙂

I have burned my forehead twice with a curling iron — it hurts REALLY bad! You gotta stop doing that — hah! Good luck!!!

I need all the good luck I can get. Thanks Linda! 🙂

The picture makes me feel glad about the fact that I dont have to do that. Things women have to do … All sympathies for you 😀

Thanks Eddie…I could use some sympathy as my scar finally starts receding…

Ouch Ameena!! Please be careful…I’ve always been afraid of curling and straightening irons. Are ceramic ones a better option? I don’t know.

    • March 16, 2012 7:01 am

Are there ceramic curling irons? I don’t know either but I will look into that!

if it makes you feel any better i always burn myself (and unfortunately not just with the curling iron) right now, i have a burn mark on my upper arm (yes, arm) from the curling iron. how it happened? i have no idea, but it literally only touched my skin for a split second!

    • March 16, 2012 2:19 pm

You must have long hair? I can’t imagine how painful burning your upper arm must be!

Bless you 😦 I loved the opening – “my name is Ameena…I’m an alcoholic”-style was very funny! My wife succeeds the other way. She burns ME when using her straighteners. Such is life… 🙂

I think you are too harsh on yourself-as in you do a fab job with the make up and handling the house and Maya, and also read a book alongside..woman, you need to be applauded!

    I loved the beginning line!;-)

I have the same kind of burn on my forehead l, what did you put on it and how long did it take to heal?

    • June 21, 2012 2:52 pm

I didn’t end up putting anything on it other than lotion. But it faded away with no scar! I was lucky.

How long did it take to heal? My burn is so hideous

      • June 23, 2012 8:43 am

A few weeks I think? Don’t worry, it’ll go faster than you think. 🙂

Whoa! This blog looks precisely like my old 1! It is on a entirely different subject but it has pretty a lot exactly the same web page layout and design. Excellent choice of colours!
