Uggs Squared
So I fully understand that it’s not Maya’s fault she has 50 times more stuff than I did when I was a kid. It’s also not her fault she has very generous grandparents. And it’s obviously not her fault she’s the only grandchild her grandparents can spoil.
Because we all know that’s my fault.
Anyway, I know all this and yet as Maya tried on the two pairs of Uggs she was recently gifted, I had this sudden urge to:
- Yell at her for being so spoiled.
- Lecture her about how name brands are completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
- Bundle her onto the first plane to India so she could see that some kids don’t even have a pair of shoes, nevermind two pairs of ridiculously expensive boots.
- Take a picture of my cute kid in her expensive boots.
So what did I end up doing? Well I yelled at her for throwing her Uggs haphazardly into her closet, I lectured her on how lucky she is to have generous grandparents, I researched ticket prices to Delhi but decided instead to make a donation on her behalf to the earthquake victims in Turkey, and then I took this picture.
And now I’m contemplating selling Maya’s Uggs on eBay to pay for therapy to help me become a normal, functioning human being who doesn’t make a mountain out of a molehill.
While I'm not going to win Mother/Wife of the Year Award anytime soon, I haven't killed anyone yet or shot myself in the head. And that, my friends, is how I calculate success these days.

Maya had Uggs when she was a baby and they were the most ridiculous gift ever but really, the cutest. She toddled around in a dress and the Uggs and people were all over it!
This is just so sweet. I know you probably don’t expect that as a response, but it is, and the picture is wonderful! Ralph bought me some Target variety Uggs and that will have to do for me. I don’t buy myself things just because they’re a name brand. But Maya got them as gifts and she deserves thime.. You make me laugh every time!
I’ve been debating buying myself the Target variety because I fear I’ll spend a ton on the real thing and then not really like them?

Dude I’m 31 and wear a pair of 10 dollar F-uggs…yes fuggs because they are ugly knock offs. Kid has got it made.
So does mine. Sigh. I blame the grandparents for depriving me of cool things when I was growing up.

Hi Ameena, Thanks for visiting my blog. Maya is gorgeous! I’ve had a little read througha couple of your previous posts and had a giggle. Totally get where you’re coming from. We have grandparents who love to spoil too, but luckily they don’t know our kids shoe sizes. Yet.

Haha, at least you actually think about these things—name brands were such a big thing when I was a kid, and I never understood the hype. My mom made sure we knew we were lucky for what we did have and that quality mattered more than a name, and there was definitely a lot of eye-rolling involved.
I’m sure I’ll be dealing with the eye-rolling soon enough…
I agree. The fact that you’re conscious of this shows you’re on the right path. But, it’s always good to see how others live. My mother brought us kids to the Philippines, and it made us better appreciate the things we had.
Our trips to India made all the difference in my upbringing…it’s the only way I realized how lucky we had it.
I have a somewhat similar situation but with my parents. My kids were until this year the only grand kids. My parents love to travel and to take us all along so my kids have flown since infancy and have been all over. It astounds my husband a bit at times because the only trips he went on as a kid were to camp.
I think that traveling is the best gift for any kid….I still remember all our trips to India and Pakistan and seeing the kids living on the street will stay with me forever.

She does take care of her stuff…I’ll give her that.
Haha she looks so cute in her Uggs…I guess she is lucky to have generous grandparents. I think getting gifts is a different thing but when she will grow older, and when she will have to earn enough to get all branded stuff, she will realize how important is it to spend on some, and save on some! You do not need to take it hard on yourself!!

I didn’t even know that made kid-size Uggs. Where have I been? I would actually consider buying my daughter some, because Uggs are some of the warmest and comfiest boots I’ve ever worn – very important on those mornings where it’s -35 degrees Celcius, or when you’re hanging out in the rink for a few hours. Yes, my daughter gets WAY more than I ever did, too.
Okay, I think I take that back. I just went and looked at the prices…
If I lived in a cold weather state I’d definitely make the investment. But here in LA where people wear shorts and Uggs they seem…unnecessary.
I agree when you say kids these days are far more lucky than we used to be. I just loved Maya’s room. I would want to decorate my little one’s room when is a little older 🙂

Confession: I’ve been waiting for a post about Maya’s shoe collection for awhile now. Even though I do agree that brands are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, other boots just don’t compare.
Maybe by doing all of this now, she’ll have zero interest in designer clobber later.
Or maybe we’re creating a monster.

Grandparents can’t help it, kid stuff is always just so irresistible. I know exactly how you feel. I didn’t grow up with much at all and it’s hard to teach your kids appreciation when they have so much. Maya’s room? Perfection! The bed, bedding, everything, completely precious, I love it all. And you guys are in L.A., she has to have Uggs.

My mom is waiting for me to have a baby and spoil it rotten. She told me she almost bought some designer baby clothes to save for later. I was like hold your horses, woman! hahaha.
Needless to say, I’m sure Maya is very down-to-earth even with her amazing little girl wardrobe. 🙂

Maya may be spoilt but she has a great mum to give her all the right guidance. You may think she is not listening now but believe me, whatever you taught her had sink in. She will be a fine lady with a good head on her shoulder!

Can I just say I ADORE Maya’s bed landscape. I want a comforter/sheet set just like that. These are the downsides of matrimony. You end up with a chocolate brown solid colored comforter. Boring.

If you want to teach her a lesson I’m willing to dress up as a poor starving student, show up on your doorstep wearing no shoes, guilt Maya about having two pairs of Uggs while I have no shoes on in the chilly 67 degree weather, and accept a pair of those boots in order to make her appreciate helping those less fortunate. Just a selfless offer…

I usually don’t like Uggs but I love the blue ones that Maya’s wearing. Maya’s room is so neat & spotless. Love everything about it.

Jokes apart, I think it is wonderful that Maya has such a loving set of parents & grandparents. When we were kids, our parents tried to talk to us about the less fortunate. But we understood nothing until age 10 or so. If you raise her well – and I have no doubt you will – you won’t need to explain the grand scheme of things to her. She’ll just know 🙂

So I have a philosophy on spoiling. Spoiling is not necessarily buying your child every name brand thing out there or letting the grandparents. Spoiling would be not insisting that your child thank her grandparents or letting her throw her Uggs all over the place just because.
It is not really the “things” that do the spoiling. It is the attitude.
Nothing annoys me more than a kid who doesn’t say thank you…Maya thankfully is NOT that kid. I’ve drilled it into her head!
My Uggs are my prize possession!!!! They are real and I spent a pretty $$ on them, but they are amazing and I love them!
Hmm…now I’m really intrigued to at least try a pair on so I can see for myself.
They are fantastic – a perk of an Australian husband 🙂 But…my last pair tore open after only a small bit of wear…:(
I already know that when I have kids, my parents are going to spoil them. I’m an only child so my mom is anxiously awaiting that time.

Just try to keep her grounded. She is a very lucky girl and why shouldn’t she have nice things? Just make sure she knows the value of a dollar and working for what you want. I don’t have kids but if I did I’d think it’s awesome for them to have more then I did. Even if I might be sorta jealous that I didn’t get it so good.
The truth is that I’m sort of jealous myself…and maybe that factors into my lectures just a bit.

wow, i love the way your thought process works. i wonder about stuff like that sometimes when i see my nieces, and how i would be if i had my own kid. honestly, i would spoil them too.. sure i’d make them work for some things, but with the same token, i would give them things i didn’t have growing up. that’s kinda the point is that our kids are a reflection of ourselves and we want to give them all the things we didn’t have. at the same time when she’s a bit older, you’ll probably have to get her to pay for some of her stuff. but omg, she’s so cute in those uggs! poor thing, don’t send her to INDIA.. UGGGGHHHH!!!
The best thing I ever did was get a retail job when I was a teenager…it made me really appreciate the value of a dollar. And now I sound like my father.
Haha your daughter is a baller and she doesn’t even know it! As much as I hope to raise my child with value for money etc, something tells me the kid will be spoilt rotten! If I have a boy, I am already thinking about all the Ralph Lauren Polo t-shirts I am going to be dressing him up in! Also for what it’s worth, my sister’s niece is the same age as Maya and goes to get her hair and nails done….her mother insists!

That’s the problem…Maya fits into things for half a minute and then what am I supposed to do with them?
Such an adorable picture! Maya’s definitely a lucky girl those are some cute Uggs. I do however think baby/toddler Uggs are ridiculous. Why spend so much on a pair of boots that a) will never actually touch the ground and b) won’t fit your child in about 3 months time. Crazy.
Because people want one or two cute pictures with their cute kid in Uggs…there is no other explanation. 🙂

I was going to argue that Uggs are actually important for winter (we just had snow) and realized you’re in LA. I love that color, what size is she? As for mountains vrs molehills, I say mountains are much more fun, especially in Uggs.
Those Uggs are adorable! I have yet to break down and buy myself a pair. For some reason it’s always easier to buy the fun stuff for my kids then it is for me. It must be some type of justification for spending money.

My grandparents aren’t around anymore (aside from one grandma with Alzheimer’s) so this is sweet to me. I’m a little jealous! It’s sweet to see that they spoil her! Maya is such a cutie too. I love the colors of her Uggs.

Too funny. Shipping her off to India may be a real eye opener, but I am thinking she may be too young to fully get that one, but that is great that you made a donation instead. Still helps someone. I get the whole spoiled thing. I am still spoiled by my grandparents it is just that I only ask when I really need or want something, because I know when things are excessive. I had this thought yesterday as I was researching tickets to Israel and Spain for this Summer and then Australia trips for the fall (may I add all in conjunction with conference for nutrition…yes, I am good at rationalizing!). After about an hour on the intern et I thought about how lucky I am to even be considering all these trips. Some people do not get to ever leave their home town. I travel every second I can. Heck, my dog and cat have travelled more than some people I know (the joys of being military family pets!).
You are so lucky to be able to travel so often…I too forget how lucky I am to do the same. And Maya will never know any different! It seems like with each generation travel is more commonplace.
I hope you at the least, find solace at how clean Maya’s room looks 🙂 We have to find a silver lining in our daily adventures 😉
