Uggs Squared

October 28, 2011

So I fully understand that it’s not Maya’s fault she has 50 times more stuff than I did when I was a kid. It’s also not her fault she has very generous grandparents. And it’s obviously not her fault she’s the only grandchild her grandparents can spoil.

Because we all know that’s my fault.

Anyway, I know all this and yet as Maya tried on the two pairs of Uggs she was recently gifted, I had this sudden urge to:

  1. Yell at her for being so spoiled.
  2. Lecture her about how name brands are completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things.
  3. Bundle her onto the first plane to India so she could see that some kids don’t even have a pair of shoes, nevermind two pairs of ridiculously expensive boots.
  4. Take a picture of my cute kid in her expensive boots.

So what did I end up doing? Well I yelled at her for throwing her Uggs haphazardly into her closet, I lectured her on how lucky she is to have generous grandparents, I researched ticket prices to Delhi but decided instead to make a donation on her behalf to the earthquake victims in Turkey, and then I took this picture.

And now I’m contemplating selling Maya’s Uggs on eBay to pay for therapy to help me become a normal, functioning human being who doesn’t make a mountain out of a molehill.

I want red uggs!! Can Maya’s grandparents adopt me as a grandchild too please?

  2. October 28, 2011 12:17 am

Fund raising Uggs? Love them Ameena. I am quite as ‘normal’ as you, just not so verbally gifted! Love the way you say things.

    • October 29, 2011 6:34 pm

Thank you Deeba…you have a fantastic way with words if you ask me!

  3. October 28, 2011 12:47 am

Don’t you wish every kid had wonderful parents and grandparents.

  4. October 28, 2011 2:20 am

she has such a rough life haha.

  5. October 28, 2011 2:41 am

i think i might move into maya’s room!! and i LOVE the uggs. i wonder how small they come . . .

  6. October 28, 2011 2:54 am

This is just so sweet. I know you probably don’t expect that as a response, but it is, and the picture is wonderful! Ralph bought me some Target variety Uggs and that will have to do for me. I don’t buy myself things just because they’re a name brand. But Maya got them as gifts and she deserves thime.. You make me laugh every time!

    • October 29, 2011 6:36 pm

I’ve been debating buying myself the Target variety because I fear I’ll spend a ton on the real thing and then not really like them?

  7. October 28, 2011 4:14 am

aw she is such a lucky girl! her room is precious, so cute!

  8. October 28, 2011 4:14 am

Dude I’m 31 and wear a pair of 10 dollar F-uggs…yes fuggs because they are ugly knock offs. Kid has got it made.
So does mine. Sigh. I blame the grandparents for depriving me of cool things when I was growing up.

    • October 29, 2011 6:37 pm

      I’m 35 and I don’t even have Fuggs yet. I’d say you’re better off than me… 🙂

  9. October 28, 2011 4:16 am

I really really dislike uggs… but how can you not find her pjs and boots precious? Adorable.

    • October 29, 2011 6:38 pm

I’m totally on the fence about getting myself Uggs. Hideous? Or just very casually trendy? The jury is still out.

  10. October 28, 2011 5:30 am

    You are too funny 🙂

  11. October 28, 2011 5:33 am

maya’s room was my dream version but in purple. too bad you are mayas mom and not mine!!!
she is one lucky child ameena. bless her and you… and ali too lol

  12. October 28, 2011 5:37 am

Hi Ameena, Thanks for visiting my blog. Maya is gorgeous! I’ve had a little read througha couple of your previous posts and had a giggle. Totally get where you’re coming from. We have grandparents who love to spoil too, but luckily they don’t know our kids shoe sizes. Yet.

    • October 29, 2011 6:39 pm

Thank you for the compliment! Good luck with the shoes…

  13. October 28, 2011 5:45 am

Haha, at least you actually think about these things—name brands were such a big thing when I was a kid, and I never understood the hype. My mom made sure we knew we were lucky for what we did have and that quality mattered more than a name, and there was definitely a lot of eye-rolling involved.

    • October 29, 2011 6:39 pm

I’m sure I’ll be dealing with the eye-rolling soon enough…

  14. October 28, 2011 6:11 am

I agree. The fact that you’re conscious of this shows you’re on the right path. But, it’s always good to see how others live. My mother brought us kids to the Philippines, and it made us better appreciate the things we had.

    • October 29, 2011 6:40 pm

Our trips to India made all the difference in my upbringing…it’s the only way I realized how lucky we had it.

  15. October 28, 2011 6:44 am

I have a somewhat similar situation but with my parents. My kids were until this year the only grand kids. My parents love to travel and to take us all along so my kids have flown since infancy and have been all over. It astounds my husband a bit at times because the only trips he went on as a kid were to camp.

    • October 29, 2011 6:41 pm

I think that traveling is the best gift for any kid….I still remember all our trips to India and Pakistan and seeing the kids living on the street will stay with me forever.

  18. October 28, 2011 7:17 am

totally lucky kid. as long as she takes care of her stuff, let her be spoiled 🙂 They’re only little once.

    • October 29, 2011 6:41 pm

She does take care of her stuff…I’ll give her that.

Haha she looks so cute in her Uggs…I guess she is lucky to have generous grandparents. I think getting gifts is a different thing but when she will grow older, and when she will have to earn enough to get all branded stuff, she will realize how important is it to spend on some, and save on some! You do not need to take it hard on yourself!!
Btw I love her room, its a complete girly room!

    • October 29, 2011 6:42 pm

Thanks for the compliments Pankti. I just finished redoing her room…must say I’m proud of it. 🙂

  20. October 28, 2011 7:38 am

I didn’t even know that made kid-size Uggs. Where have I been? I would actually consider buying my daughter some, because Uggs are some of the warmest and comfiest boots I’ve ever worn – very important on those mornings where it’s -35 degrees Celcius, or when you’re hanging out in the rink for a few hours. Yes, my daughter gets WAY more than I ever did, too.

    • October 28, 2011 7:39 am

Okay, I think I take that back. I just went and looked at the prices…

      • October 29, 2011 6:43 pm

If I lived in a cold weather state I’d definitely make the investment. But here in LA where people wear shorts and Uggs they seem…unnecessary.

  21. October 28, 2011 7:42 am

I agree when you say kids these days are far more lucky than we used to be. I just loved Maya’s room. I would want to decorate my little one’s room when is a little older 🙂

    • October 29, 2011 6:44 pm

Thank you Nishi! I just finished redoing her room and I am quite pleased with the way it turned out.

  22. October 28, 2011 7:52 am

Ah, but you know what I noticed? Her room is spotless. She’s doing something right 😀
    *kisses* HH

  23. October 28, 2011 7:56 am

Confession: I’ve been waiting for a post about Maya’s shoe collection for awhile now. Even though I do agree that brands are irrelevant in the grand scheme of things, other boots just don’t compare.

Maybe by doing all of this now, she’ll have zero interest in designer clobber later.

Or maybe we’re creating a monster.

Either way, I’m so along for the ride on this one.

  24. October 28, 2011 7:56 am

Well of course she needs 2 pairs of boots! One for her hands and the other for her feet!

  25. October 28, 2011 8:30 am

Awww, cute picture! I love how all of that went through your head 😉

  26. October 28, 2011 8:38 am

Those are some very flattering uggs! And I absolutely love and relate to your thought processes…I feel like my mind will go the same place once I have some little spawn of my own

  27. October 28, 2011 8:47 am

Grandparents can’t help it, kid stuff is always just so irresistible. I know exactly how you feel. I didn’t grow up with much at all and it’s hard to teach your kids appreciation when they have so much. Maya’s room? Perfection! The bed, bedding, everything, completely precious, I love it all. And you guys are in L.A., she has to have Uggs.

    • October 29, 2011 6:47 pm

Thank you for all the compliments Marie! I just finished her room and although I was nervous about the pink/gray combo I’m quite happy with the way it turned out.

  28. October 28, 2011 8:49 am

My mom is waiting for me to have a baby and spoil it rotten. She told me she almost bought some designer baby clothes to save for later. I was like hold your horses, woman! hahaha.

Needless to say, I’m sure Maya is very down-to-earth even with her amazing little girl wardrobe. 🙂

    • October 29, 2011 6:47 pm

Maya’s grandmother bought Maya stuff before she was born! Crazy how that happens…

  29. October 28, 2011 8:58 am

Maya may be spoilt but she has a great mum to give her all the right guidance. You may think she is not listening now but believe me, whatever you taught her had sink in. She will be a fine lady with a good head on her shoulder!

    • October 29, 2011 6:48 pm

Thank you my friend for your confidence in me. It makes me more confident in me!

  30. October 28, 2011 9:10 am

Can I just say I ADORE Maya’s bed landscape. I want a comforter/sheet set just like that. These are the downsides of matrimony. You end up with a chocolate brown solid colored comforter. Boring.

    • October 29, 2011 6:49 pm

Thank you for the compliment! I totally wanted something interesting for our duvet as well but somehow the stuff in the Cal King size is just not as nice as the stuff Pottery Barn Kids carries…

  31. October 28, 2011 9:13 am

If you want to teach her a lesson I’m willing to dress up as a poor starving student, show up on your doorstep wearing no shoes, guilt Maya about having two pairs of Uggs while I have no shoes on in the chilly 67 degree weather, and accept a pair of those boots in order to make her appreciate helping those less fortunate. Just a selfless offer…

    • October 29, 2011 6:49 pm

Chilly 67 degree weather…too funny. You redefine selflessness Becki!

  32. October 28, 2011 9:17 am

I usually don’t like Uggs but I love the blue ones that Maya’s wearing. Maya’s room is so neat & spotless. Love everything about it.

I think it’s just the way it goes, it’s grandparents job to spoil their grandkids… 🙂

  33. October 28, 2011 10:06 am

Dude, I’m convinced I can squish my giant feet into the red ones. Once again, I’m sad you guys don’t live closer. Otherwise, I’d so borrow those shoes 🙂

    • October 29, 2011 6:50 pm

You’re so tiny that I bet you could easily fit into Maya’s shoes!

  34. October 28, 2011 10:18 am

Do you think a trip to India would hit her yet? Maybe send her there for a few months, on her own, when she’s a little older. 😉

    Uggs are just so cute!

    • October 29, 2011 6:50 pm

I think she’s a bit too young to remember but I see a trip to India in her near future…

  35. October 28, 2011 11:25 am

Okay now I want to be Maya 🙂

Jokes apart, I think it is wonderful that Maya has such a loving set of parents & grandparents. When we were kids, our parents tried to talk to us about the less fortunate. But we understood nothing until age 10 or so. If you raise her well – and I have no doubt you will – you won’t need to explain the grand scheme of things to her. She’ll just know 🙂

    • October 29, 2011 6:51 pm

I agree, I think 10 is a good age to take a little trip to India/Pakistan. And thank you Gayatri for your confidence in my parenting – it means a lot!

  36. October 28, 2011 11:31 am

So I have a philosophy on spoiling. Spoiling is not necessarily buying your child every name brand thing out there or letting the grandparents. Spoiling would be not insisting that your child thank her grandparents or letting her throw her Uggs all over the place just because.

It is not really the “things” that do the spoiling. It is the attitude.

    • October 29, 2011 6:52 pm

Nothing annoys me more than a kid who doesn’t say thank you…Maya thankfully is NOT that kid. I’ve drilled it into her head!

  37. October 28, 2011 11:40 am

My Uggs are my prize possession!!!! They are real and I spent a pretty $$ on them, but they are amazing and I love them!

    • October 29, 2011 6:52 pm

Hmm…now I’m really intrigued to at least try a pair on so I can see for myself.

  38. October 28, 2011 11:42 am

I already know that when I have kids, my parents are going to spoil them. I’m an only child so my mom is anxiously awaiting that time.

    Maya is adorable. 🙂

  40. October 28, 2011 11:53 am

Maya is one lucky kid, but I have no doubt you make sure she knows that. 🙂

    • October 29, 2011 6:54 pm

I try. I think I’m successful but only time will tell…

  41. October 28, 2011 12:09 pm

    I want to be Maya..
On a serious note, how cute does she look and love her long lustrous hair…. Mine is all shedding.

    • October 29, 2011 6:54 pm

Unlike me, Maya has the best hair. Her secret is Pantene…it’s the only thing that works!

  42. October 28, 2011 12:55 pm

And all I got from my grandparents for Christmas was $5 and some lip gloss. Lucky lucky girl 🙂

    • October 29, 2011 6:54 pm

Just curious…was this for Christmas last year? Or when you were a kid?

  43. October 28, 2011 1:25 pm

Just try to keep her grounded. She is a very lucky girl and why shouldn’t she have nice things? Just make sure she knows the value of a dollar and working for what you want. I don’t have kids but if I did I’d think it’s awesome for them to have more then I did. Even if I might be sorta jealous that I didn’t get it so good.

    • October 29, 2011 6:55 pm

The truth is that I’m sort of jealous myself…and maybe that factors into my lectures just a bit.

  44. October 28, 2011 2:42 pm

Hah, I liked this post! Maybe she can somehow have to work to “earn” those uggs?? Besides the fact that those are inside-out sheep, they also send a message that I’m not sure every parent can agree with.

    • October 29, 2011 6:55 pm

If I could put Maya to work I would. I’m anxiously awaiting that day…

  45. October 28, 2011 2:51 pm

If those Uggs go missing….check my purse. Wait what size are they? HA! 🙂

    • October 29, 2011 6:56 pm

If the Uggs go missing it’s because I’ve sold them to buy myself a pair!

  46. October 28, 2011 4:53 pm

Ummm… so talking about moms who need perspective…. is it bad that I saw the picture of your daughter and thought immediately, “OOOh I want to pin this picture because I love the interior decor!”

There’s help for me somewhere, I’m sure of it.

    • October 29, 2011 6:57 pm

You are so sweet! Thank you for appreciating my attempt at decor – I don’t think that’s crazy at all.

  47. October 28, 2011 7:52 pm

wow, i love the way your thought process works. i wonder about stuff like that sometimes when i see my nieces, and how i would be if i had my own kid. honestly, i would spoil them too.. sure i’d make them work for some things, but with the same token, i would give them things i didn’t have growing up. that’s kinda the point is that our kids are a reflection of ourselves and we want to give them all the things we didn’t have. at the same time when she’s a bit older, you’ll probably have to get her to pay for some of her stuff. but omg, she’s so cute in those uggs! poor thing, don’t send her to INDIA.. UGGGGHHHH!!!

    • October 29, 2011 6:58 pm

The best thing I ever did was get a retail job when I was a teenager…it made me really appreciate the value of a dollar. And now I sound like my father.

  48. October 28, 2011 9:55 pm

Haha your daughter is a baller and she doesn’t even know it! As much as I hope to raise my child with value for money etc, something tells me the kid will be spoilt rotten! If I have a boy, I am already thinking about all the Ralph Lauren Polo t-shirts I am going to be dressing him up in! Also for what it’s worth, my sister’s niece is the same age as Maya and goes to get her hair and nails done….her mother insists!

  49. October 28, 2011 10:12 pm

    Cute boots! Lucky girl 🙂

    • October 29, 2011 6:59 pm

Thank you Jolene! I wonder – are Uggs a bit deal in Canada?

  50. October 29, 2011 12:04 am

Reading your posts make me happy. I always laugh and I always relate.

  51. October 29, 2011 12:43 am

Maya looks very cute. I’m the mother who bought a Ralph Lauren flag sweater for my son when he was 6 months! It was just so gorgeous I couldn’t resist. So, I do understand the Uggs. If the tickets to India need a home? I’ll send photos. GG

    • October 29, 2011 6:59 pm

The RL flag sweater is a must for every boy…SO CUTE.

  52. October 29, 2011 7:25 am

What size are her feet – please consider me for her hand-me-downs! She’s adorable in them and I have no doubt you are raising world-wise kid.

  54. October 29, 2011 3:22 pm

    Love the Uggs!!!
    I think Sofia needs a pair. Oh, is the wrong? The kid already has a few pairs of boots. Nevermind… just think of the lucky kid who will get the hand-me-downs in a month when she grows out of them. {wink}

    • October 29, 2011 7:01 pm

That’s the problem…Maya fits into things for half a minute and then what am I supposed to do with them?

  55. October 29, 2011 4:59 pm

Such an adorable picture! Maya’s definitely a lucky girl those are some cute Uggs. I do however think baby/toddler Uggs are ridiculous. Why spend so much on a pair of boots that a) will never actually touch the ground and b) won’t fit your child in about 3 months time. Crazy.

    • October 29, 2011 7:01 pm

Because people want one or two cute pictures with their cute kid in Uggs…there is no other explanation. 🙂

  56. October 29, 2011 10:25 pm

She is definitely one lucky as well as super cute girl!

P.S. I simply love the way you write Ameena! 🙂

I was going to argue that Uggs are actually important for winter (we just had snow) and realized you’re in LA. I love that color, what size is she? As for mountains vrs molehills, I say mountains are much more fun, especially in Uggs.

  66. October 31, 2011 8:44 am

Those Uggs are adorable! I have yet to break down and buy myself a pair. For some reason it’s always easier to buy the fun stuff for my kids then it is for me. It must be some type of justification for spending money.

  67. October 31, 2011 12:51 pm

    HAPPY HALLOWEEN!!!

  68. October 31, 2011 1:53 pm

My grandparents aren’t around anymore (aside from one grandma with Alzheimer’s) so this is sweet to me. I’m a little jealous! It’s sweet to see that they spoil her! Maya is such a cutie too. I love the colors of her Uggs.

  70. October 31, 2011 4:34 pm

Or you could send a pair to me! I asked Santa for a new pair this year. Just kidding – besides, lets be honest. My feet belong to a 6’7 basketball player. Not an adorable little girl.

  71. October 31, 2011 8:33 pm

Lucky girl’s got it made! And oooh, I love the red ones. I’d be tempted to wear a red on one foot and a blue on the other. Teehee.

  72. October 31, 2011 8:44 pm

Too funny. Shipping her off to India may be a real eye opener, but I am thinking she may be too young to fully get that one, but that is great that you made a donation instead. Still helps someone. I get the whole spoiled thing. I am still spoiled by my grandparents it is just that I only ask when I really need or want something, because I know when things are excessive. I had this thought yesterday as I was researching tickets to Israel and Spain for this Summer and then Australia trips for the fall (may I add all in conjunction with conference for nutrition…yes, I am good at rationalizing!). After about an hour on the intern et I thought about how lucky I am to even be considering all these trips. Some people do not get to ever leave their home town. I travel every second I can. Heck, my dog and cat have travelled more than some people I know (the joys of being military family pets!).

    • November 1, 2011 7:01 am

You are so lucky to be able to travel so often…I too forget how lucky I am to do the same. And Maya will never know any different! It seems like with each generation travel is more commonplace.

  73. November 2, 2011 8:23 am
