platinum status

October 14, 2011

You know how some people get upset when their moral integrity is questioned? Or when their parenting abilities are questioned? Or when their political views are questioned?

Well my husband gets offended when his Delta frequent flier status is questioned.

Me: “I’m booking our NYC Thanksgiving trip. What airline do you want to fly?”

Ali:“Let’s fly Delta because I have status.”

Me: “What are you? A Gold Member?”

Ali: “Please. A Gold Member? Whatever. I’m Platinum Medallion. Platinum. Medallion. Got that?”

We're on our way back Dylan...to spend even more in your very cute but overpriced store.

As Ali feverishly dialed his special toll-free Platinum Medallion line to request a replacement card (I simply can’t imagine where his original card disappeared to) I debated my next move. Under normal circumstances I’d reply with one or more of the following:

  1. “Yes I’ve “got that.” You can take your platinum status and shove it *insert bad words here.*”
  2. “How cute. Does priority boarding make you feel like a star? Like you’re important and special?”
  3. “That flimsy little plastic card represents everything that’s wrong with the airline industry.”
  4. “I don’t really care what your Delta status is, I was just trying to make conversation so you’d think your input mattered.”

So what did I say? Well nothing. Because I’m going to New York again in a month and everything else is irrelevant.

JEALOUS about New York….as long as you get there, who cares how…..just let the husband deal with that part! Also look at it this way: more frequent flier miles = upgrades for you ;)!

    • October 14, 2011 2:22 pm

I have no problem reaping the rewards…but it doesn’t stop me from making fun of my husband. I’m terrible in that way.

  2. October 14, 2011 12:54 am

haha awesome four options 😀 ..cracked me up …….NEW YORK….. so want to be there someday 😀

  3. October 14, 2011 12:55 am

Happy shopping in NY. ( Don’t know if you like to shop though!) I would, if I were you.

    • October 14, 2011 2:23 pm

I’m not a big shopper but the lure of Bloomingdale’s gets me every time!

Yes that more importatn going and having some fun 🙂 enjoyyyyyy

  5. October 14, 2011 2:53 am

I think I would’ve gone for something like number 4, but nothing was probably the wisest option 🙂
Also how cute does Maya look in (what I think is) a matching velour tracksuit! Have fun in NY!!

  6. October 14, 2011 3:38 am

    Maya looks beautiful and cute!
I felt I was finally growing up when I learnt to keep my mouth shut in similar situations with my hubby. Boy, did it help to avoid the conflicts!

    • October 14, 2011 2:24 pm

I realize how simply it is to just keep my mouth shut but some days I simply can’t!

  7. October 14, 2011 4:40 am

I’d be quiet, too if I was getting a trip to New York!! I only live a couple of hours away, but I never get there. Haven’t been in probably 10 years or so. I dream about it sometimes. I went there a lot when I was in college, saw lots of Broadway musicals. It was a wonderful time. Can’t wait to hear about your trip!

    • October 14, 2011 2:24 pm

A couple of hours away? Fran! You must go more often! On my behalf. Please.

  8. October 14, 2011 5:14 am

Will you be here for the parade? How fun for Maya. I’m so glad you’re coming back! Will be out of the city friday-sun but hope to see you. As for freq flyer stuff, I constantly forget to give our #’s and get credit and Marc can’t stand this, glad others fight about these things too- well not you because you’re sucking it up for your NY visit.

    • October 14, 2011 2:25 pm

We will be there for the parade again, although Maya lasted about 20 minutes last year. I definitely hope to see you and Sam again!

  9. October 14, 2011 5:28 am

OO I think I will be here for Thanksgiving so this time we must meet up!!

  10. October 14, 2011 5:35 am

I have a friend like that. I make sure I’m not around when he makes his reservations.

  11. October 14, 2011 5:42 am

Yay New York! That will be so much fun! What are you doing over christmas? I know you wanted to let me know about my LA plans. I’ll be there from Dec 23 to Dec 27. I am assuming you may have some plans too, but let me know if you are in town.

    • October 14, 2011 2:27 pm

I would love to meet you while you are here! I’m leaving Dec 28th so the timing is perfect.

  12. October 14, 2011 5:54 am

AHHH!! So jealous! Take me with you!! I’ll fly ANY airline! 😉

  13. October 14, 2011 5:56 am

NYC! jealous. I think you go there more than me and here I live on the east coast!

  14. October 14, 2011 6:14 am

Hahaha.. you cracked me up. Ali sure knows what he wants, I actually like that! We will be at New Jersey again this Thanksgiving. Oww.. I really wish we could meet up. Because it’s actually only about 1.5 hours from NYC where my in-laws are. However knowing how crazy & chaotic the Thanksgiving always be, I doubt it. Enjoy your NYC trip (I hope Ali changes his mind about moving to NYC sooner rather than later).
Be careful if you go shopping the next day. It is always a madness scene … 🙂

    Have a great weekend!

  15. October 14, 2011 6:53 am

I am kind if with Ali. The platinum medallion status is the best. When we arrived in Atlanta from Zurich last summer to find our connecting flight cancelled, we were booked onto a hotel and on the first flight the next morning while everyone else was still waiting in line. My kids also love gorging themselves on snacks in Deltas private lounge.

    • October 14, 2011 2:29 pm

Maya loves the lounge…she’s all about her free “sparkling water.” The kid needs a reality check.

  16. October 14, 2011 7:09 am

Wow, I didn’t know you could have “status” with an airline. That’s . . . Fancy. At least you get to go to New York. You’re right, everything else is irrelevant.

  17. October 14, 2011 7:20 am

I love NYC around the holidays, even though I live way too close to the craziest part of town. We always go to Boston for Thanksgiving, but maybe one of these days we’ll get to stay and enjoy the long weekend without the bus travel.

    • October 14, 2011 2:30 pm

Funny how you leave becaues of the crowds and I go there because of the crowds. 🙂

  18. October 14, 2011 8:16 am

Haha oh Ameena; I have to tell you I kind of relate to Ali in this one…well not the Delta part because I really don’t like Delta Airlines at all, but I have United Premier Executive status (and whatever the British Airways Executive club thing is called)- and as much as I dislike United Airlines as well (due to horrendous service experiences…well i find most US airlines don’t have any comparable service to int’l airlines), I do like being able to use the quicker premier security, check in two bags for free, have priority check-in/boarding/get free upgrades etc…what can I say I admit I like feeling like some sort of a hotshot elite at the airport. vain, vain, I know.

    • October 14, 2011 2:30 pm

There is no good domestic airlines with the exception of Virgin America. International travel is so much better somehow…

  19. October 14, 2011 8:35 am

NYC again!! Lucky duck!!! And you get to fly like a super star?

    • October 14, 2011 2:31 pm

Ali is the superstar. I’m just the one who follows behind him with my “non-status.”

  20. October 14, 2011 8:42 am

I hate Delta, haha. But yay for you going to New York, I know you must be so excited!

    • October 14, 2011 2:31 pm

I hate Delta too but I’m kind of willing to walk to NY if that’s what it takes.

  21. October 14, 2011 9:37 am

I would take advantage of anything that made air travel easier. And can you believe I’ve never been to New York? Hopefully one of these days.

And yes, those huge, bright candy stores just lure the little ones in and you can’t not buy something.

    • October 14, 2011 2:32 pm

It’s the only place that I lose my uptightness and let Maya go crazy for candy.

  22. October 14, 2011 9:37 am

AGAIN!?!?! I’m telling you…ASSISTANT. You can’t carry those bags by yourself, and we both know Ali isn’t going to help. He’ll be staring at his technology. 😛

    • October 14, 2011 2:32 pm

You crack me up. If my assistant takes care of Maya then you are hired!

      • October 14, 2011 3:00 pm

Only if I’m allowed to blog about it, lol. You know how it goes.

  23. October 14, 2011 9:42 am

Sadly yes, sometimes I find it best to to just keep my mouth shut and keep my beyond-brilliant thoughts to myself. A compromise of marriage. Sigh.

But hey, if his stupid plastic card scores you a free cocktail (or champagne!) on the plane…I’d say go with it…Otherwise, screw it.

    • October 14, 2011 2:33 pm

Sometimes I get to be in the front of the boarding line like he does…so I guess that’s something?

  24. October 14, 2011 10:16 am

NYC again? Nice! I don’t fly that often but next week I’ll be going to Atlanta with Delta for a business trip 😛

    • October 14, 2011 2:33 pm

Atlanta is a really nice airport if I remember correctly. Lots of food options!

      • October 16, 2011 11:06 am

Ooh good to know! I better research it more! 😀

  25. October 14, 2011 10:39 am

Bhahahah!!!!! I love Ali…he seems so innocently awesome!

YAY!!!! NYC Rocks the Party, doll!! You deserve every ounce of your status, comfy flight and what NY has to offer!!!!! So happy for you!

    xxoo

    • October 14, 2011 2:34 pm

Thank you Kris! Poor Ali is so innocent. It’s the little things that make him happy…

  26. October 14, 2011 10:43 am

#4 is the world’s perfect answer!

  27. October 14, 2011 10:52 am

I’ve always wanted to go to Dylan’s! Oh, and I hope you guys’ll visit my favorite street food cart this time 🙂

    • October 14, 2011 2:34 pm

I still have the address in my iPhone…I will definitely try again this trip!

Was Ali channeling George Clooney’s character from “Up in the Air” where he and Vera Farmiga are comparing elite status?

NYC at Thanksgiving is divine. BTW, would you like my college roommate’s number in Manhattan? She’s got 2 boys, preteen & teen, and a darling husband named Az. Hey, Ameena & Ali, meet Audrey & Az! You would totally have to meet somewhere starting with A, wouldn’t you? Maya, Nicholas and Alexander could roll their eyes together at both sets of parents.

You looked beautiful in your dress this morning. I’ve never seen your legs before, and they’re stunning. All leggy-model, made-for-miniskirts, goes-on-forever stunning. If I had your legs, I would never wear pants. I would even consider hot-pants or Daisy Dukes. If you’ve got ’em, flaunt ’em, and you’ve got ‘EM!

    • October 14, 2011 2:35 pm

Hot pants? Daisy Dukes? If my mom is reading this right now she is cringing in fear. But thank you for the compliment. 🙂

  29. October 14, 2011 11:02 am

You should probably order him a tshirt that says “Delta Platinum Medallion Member” and demand he wear it on the flight.
And take pictures and post them here.

    • October 14, 2011 2:36 pm

That would be the perfect post! Fabulous idea Jessica.

  30. October 14, 2011 11:48 am

Haha! So not only are we twins, but our husbands have similar personalities too! I can’t tell you the number of times I have to listen to the words, “Platinum, Elite, Priority, Upgrade” when we’re on vacation. I like the perks but it drives me nuts at the same time.

And you’re going to NYC? I’m so jealous!

    • October 14, 2011 2:36 pm

You said it: I love the perks too…I just don’t necessarily want to hear about them.

  31. October 14, 2011 12:41 pm

I can tell your book is going to be hilarious. I’ve never been to Dylan’s or heard of it and I live here in NYC. I would say I’d check it out, but after reading the overpriced comment, I’d be lying. 😀

    • October 14, 2011 2:37 pm

No need to check it out, especially if you aren’t a candy fiend like Maya!

we were just in nyc over columbus day weekend, and i wasn’t too impressed with dylans candy bar – its so overrated!! but my daughter went to town with the candy and ice cream…

    • October 14, 2011 2:37 pm

Dylan appeals to kids and only kids. I wasn’t too impressed after 5 minutes…

  33. October 14, 2011 2:28 pm

All I hear is Nordstrom shopping spreeeee!!!

    • October 14, 2011 2:38 pm

I don’t think there is a Nordstrom in NYC but there is a Bloomingdale’s! And that is 1000 X better in my opinion….

  34. October 14, 2011 2:51 pm

Haha. I would’ve just been like, “Oh ok, well then you can just take care of it all then. Thanks SO much!” 🙂 And I love NYC during the holidays…so fun!

    • October 16, 2011 7:30 am

I would never entrust Ali with our travel arrangements. Ever. Ever.

  35. October 14, 2011 3:47 pm

You’re booking a round-trip ticket to New York, right?

  36. October 14, 2011 5:11 pm

Ack. Platinum Medallion. Like corporate royalty. Why can’t we all just get on the damn airplane and fly?

  37. October 14, 2011 5:43 pm

    I love the picture! 🙂

  38. October 14, 2011 7:33 pm

    Ameena,

Have fun in New YORK, Babe :)) xx

  39. October 15, 2011 7:30 am

OMG, nyc will be so fun for you. i love it! your husband is so funny, i am the same way with my hilton honors and try to score. 🙂

    • October 16, 2011 7:32 am

He has a Hilton Honors account too…and a variety of other cards that make him happy.

  40. October 15, 2011 7:49 am

I still remember your trip last year to NYC, can’t believe it has been a year already. Time flies!

When I worked at Marriott…I would check-in the Platinum status guests and we were told we give them everything they want. if there’s a suite, you give it. If they want food…you give it. If they want you to fee them that said food…well, I had my boundaries too. lol!

  41. October 15, 2011 8:21 am

We’re both very excited about husband’s Continental Silver Elite status because it means a special line and extra baggage for a family of five traveling to the US.

    • October 16, 2011 7:33 am

I have to say that Continental is really one fabulous airlines. Especially international!

  42. October 15, 2011 11:42 am

Mr P is the same way… but more important than that, I am so jealous you are going to NY. You are going to have the most awesome time darling! Btw, in case you didn’t know, Laduree has just opened up there, so you can get your macaron on (even if it is only one LOL–I can’t believe you can do that).
I have been dreaming of the pretzel croissant and hope to recreate it soon in an upcoming post.
    *kisses* HH

    • October 16, 2011 7:34 am

If I could find a way to mail you a pretzel croissant I would… PS: I saw them at Whole Foods last week. I wonder if they compare?

  43. October 15, 2011 12:14 pm

All your trips to New York make me so jealous!! I have a looooong list of places I want to see and eat at but we never make the 6 hour trip over there.

I think I need to make it happen in the summer or during spring break.

  44. October 15, 2011 2:09 pm

I want to hear (read) all about it! I’ll make it to New York one of these days….That candy store looks pretty amazing, though. Not sure who would have more fun – me or my kids!

    • October 16, 2011 7:36 am

Your kids for sure. Because your head will be spinning from all the noise/activity/madness!

  45. October 15, 2011 3:22 pm

damn that card, it holds so much power….for some. Let him feel that “manhood” through a card. haha.

  46. October 15, 2011 4:24 pm

I love this dialogue between you and Ali. Hilarious, but with the tiniest hint of bitterness (not that I think you and Ali are bitter towards each other!). It should be in a movie script.

There’s a tiny chance I might be in New York for Thanksgiving this year. I really don’t know what my plans are yet.

And despite the fact that I have lived here for four years and two months now, I have never been to Dylan’s candy bar. I think it would just be too tempting for me. And not the good kind of temptation, you know?

  47. October 15, 2011 6:25 pm

Oh yay! Your beloved NYC! If I had Platinum status, I would be flaunting it too. I think my dad is gold member or silver or something because he flies frequently, and they treat you well!

    • October 16, 2011 7:37 am

They treat you better…but does any airline really treat you well? Not anymore unfortunately.

  48. October 15, 2011 9:34 pm

Lucky girl! Sometimes I think I need a card just to get outta the house sans kiddies. A get out of jail free card. Ha! 😛

    • October 16, 2011 7:37 am

Luckily they won’t be young forever…that’s what keeps me going!

  49. October 15, 2011 10:55 pm

So freaking jealous. I’m dying to see New York. Have the best time. 🙂

  50. October 15, 2011 11:04 pm

Delta is one of my favorite airlines too… for Biscoff. also, we often get $50 upgrades to first class! makes any flight better.

I LOVE NYC. my very favorite! better than Biscoff. I’ll take any airline to get there, and I’d even endure the very back seat.

    • October 16, 2011 7:38 am

Aside from Alaska Airlines I have never seen a $50 upgrade before? I am intrigued…

  51. October 16, 2011 11:10 am

  53. October 16, 2011 7:45 pm

Personally I don’t think you take the full advantage of Ali’s Platinum status… how about leaving him and Maya home on the weekend and using those frequent flier miles for London or Paris… a weekend with a gf without kids and husbands is like weeks with both of them… Tell him to rack ’em up.

    • October 18, 2011 6:46 am

I’ve thought about this but unfortunately Ali has to travel WITH me for me to reap the rewards…

  54. October 16, 2011 8:57 pm

So nice – NYC in the fall. As you know, I’m so not a fan of that fair city in the summer months. The dead of winter can be brutal too, but mid-November? Totally jealous!

    • October 18, 2011 6:47 am

I love the summer months in NYC! And the winter months. And really, any time at all. 🙂

  55. October 16, 2011 11:48 pm

Yikes! NYC! I would love to be there again … although I am in London (my little spiritual city). Enjoy!

    – Razwana

  56. October 17, 2011 9:42 am

I am always so jealous of people that have frequent flier status. I always buy flights from different airlines and more often than not forget to give them my frequent flier number. As a result I have accumulated a few hundred miles here and there on a dozen different airlines. Totally my own fault but I am jealous nonetheless!

    • October 18, 2011 6:48 am

Ali would do the same thing if I didn’t organize and keep track of his frequent flier miles. Along with everything else in his life.

  57. October 17, 2011 8:48 pm

I love NY!!!! I am going in April, and already can’t wait!

    • October 18, 2011 6:48 am

It is so beautiful there in April! I am excited for you.

  58. October 17, 2011 10:53 pm

First off, i love your blog! your hysterical but not ina ‘trying to hard’ kind of way.
I was curious. How did you and ali meet?

  59. October 19, 2011 10:11 am

Oh how fun that you’ll be in NY again. I’m so fascinated with it – I think a lot of the world is. And the Nester just posted today that even NYC garbage is something people are buying. I’m not sure I’d go that far.

    • October 19, 2011 10:43 am

They are buying garbage? Wow. I’m speechless. And that doesn’t happen often.

  60. October 20, 2011 6:49 am

Obviously going is more important than replying to the Hubsand 😀 Have fun!

  61. October 21, 2011 12:33 pm

haha great story : ) Have fun in NY! I see you plan to visit City Bakery for the pretzel croissants – one of my favorites. What are your other plans while you are here?

    • October 21, 2011 2:10 pm

I want to take Maya to another show because she seems to love them! Maybe the Rockettes? And aside from that we’ll be ice skating and visiting Bloomingdale’s. Any suggestions are welcome!

  62. September 1, 2012 11:49 am

You’ll love New York Trust me

  63. October 9, 2014 8:08 pm
