I Can’t Remember Things Anymore

November 1, 2010

On an average day I feel dumb for approximately 10 different reasons. This is nothing new.  But on Friday I felt REALLY dumb because I couldn’t remember my phone number. I was filling out paperwork at the doctor’s office and actually had to pull out my phone and check because I could not remember.

This is only one in a long line of things I’ve forgotten lately.

  1. I went to the store for laundry detergent. I came home with bread, bananas, and turkey and absolutely nothing to wash our clothes with.
  2. I saw Arnold Schwarzenegger at a bookstore and stared at him for a minute wondering why he looked SO familiar.
  3. Maya: “Where does the sun go when the moon comes out?”  Me: “Ask your teacher Maya.  I forgot.”  If I’m being 100% honest I should attribute this to ignorance and not forgetfulness.

Good thing I didn't forget my brother's birthday. I shudder to think of the consequences...

So there I was, all armed and ready to battle the sample loving crowds at Costco, just so I could pick up a massive container of Ginkgo Biloba, when I heard Ali call my child Mia instead of Maya.  And just like that, all was well in the world once more.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that being married doesn’t have it’s perks.

    I know!!Those sample loving crowds at Costco…ugh!!

Yes, your husband has got you beat…he can’t even remember his own daughter’s name!

  2. November 1, 2010 2:11 am

I honestly don’t know what has happened to my brain. It started to dissapear when I was pregnant… its never really came back.

  3. November 1, 2010 2:52 am

Mia, Maya, same thing, right? If you ever have any more of those “go ask your teacher” moments – just message me so you can at least look good to your kid. 🙂

  4. November 1, 2010 2:54 am

I love the silver lining in all of this. Men, I think, are usually more trouble than they’re worth. But it’s nice to know that they DO come in handy on occasion.

I don’t know that ginkgo biloba actually does anything for memory. I would stick with omega 3’s. They are definitely good for your brain.

  5. November 1, 2010 3:35 am

Oh my God – I love that Ali line. And you #1 – I am famous for going in and getting a million things I DIDN’T need, and absolutely that I did…hence, the going every few days…

Good looks run in your family it seems! 🙂

    • November 1, 2010 8:40 am

You just made my brother’s day!! And mine too, of course. 🙂

  6. November 1, 2010 3:42 am

You are so not alone with the forgetfulness. I’ve actually created a name for min. I call it mushy mind syndrome. I’m lucky if I remember my own name some days let alone my children’s.

Hopefully they at least had some tasty samples out at costco!

  7. November 1, 2010 3:44 am

OMG hilarious…you are turning into the old ladies that come to my pharmacy everyday…so sad but they are always writing checks and forgetting the month! 😦

  8. November 1, 2010 4:13 am

bahahahah. my brain went bye-bye once i turned 23 so i’ll be right behind you buying the ginko biloba!

  9. November 1, 2010 4:15 am

The only thing that would have made this funnier is if you actually went up to Arnold Schwarzenegger and said, “I’m sorry, you look so familiar. Do I know you from somewhere?” Ha ha ha ha.

  10. November 1, 2010 4:25 am

I’ve realized I’m one of those people who can’t go to the store anymore without a list. Even if it’s just two things. Because if I don’t, I’ll go in for those two things and come out with ten. And none of the things I bought were the things I went in for…

  11. November 1, 2010 4:47 am

    Mia…LOL. Wow.

  12. November 1, 2010 5:12 am

Haha I love the tags on your posts.

And I’ve don’t #1 on your list more times than I can count. I hate forgetting things, but there are certain situations where ignorance is bliss!

Haha I’ve lost my car in the grocery store parking lot the last 2 weeks, and when the guy at the running room asked me for my phone number I gave him a combination of mine, and my work number. That was embarassing. 🙂

  14. November 1, 2010 6:40 am

golly…I went to the store yesterday for laundry soap and came home without it.

    must be in the air!

did you grab 2 tubs of ginko by chance???

I am so glad Ali made you feel better! that cracked me UP!!!

    happy birthday to your brother!

  15. November 1, 2010 6:47 am

I can completely relate to this. A while ago ago, I forgot the locker combination to the lock I had used at the gym for five years.

About a month after that, I forgot the password to my voicemail when I got really excited about a job interview.

    I was convinced I had early-onset Alzheimer’s. I am still not convinced that I don’t.

  16. November 1, 2010 7:09 am

Haha, this reminds me of my roommates and I. I live with an Ana and an Anne (pronounced Ah-na) and I constantly call them by the other’s pronunciation. Oh-and I have definitely gone to the grocery store for one thing and left with several items, none of which is the original that sent me to the grocery store in the first place. It really is frustrating!

  17. November 1, 2010 7:13 am

If its any consolation, I remember the useless things, like what shoes so and so was wearing. I cant tell you how many times Ive gotten forms messed up because my social security number was wrong….
and im still in my twenties so i think by the time im my dads age i would have completely lost it. what was this post about again?

  18. November 1, 2010 7:16 am

Looooool, that is seriously hilarious. Definitely a perk of being married! 🙂

  19. November 1, 2010 7:34 am

That is cool, hilarious. May be because of Married thing

  20. November 1, 2010 7:36 am

i have the perfect shopping list note pad for you. it read “The odds of going into a store only for a loaf of bread and coming out with only a loaf of bread…one in a million” or something along those lines 🙂

  21. November 1, 2010 8:00 am

I always do that! I note things that we need in my head for weeks (oops, out of dish soap – gotta grab that next time…) – and then totally flake when I actually am at the store. If only there was a way to resolve that… hmm… like make a list perhaps?!

    • November 1, 2010 8:37 am

I make lists all the time and then either I forget them at home or I forget to look at them. Ridiculous, right?

  22. November 1, 2010 8:01 am

And you just reminded me that I forgot dryer sheets at the store. LOL

  23. November 1, 2010 8:23 am

I’ve had to dig deep for my phone number a time or two. I think it’s the mind clutter. If I could manage to forget a few pieces of useless info every day I’d be better at the grocery store!

It is great to have a partner, even in senility.

  24. November 1, 2010 8:29 am

Oh man, I have a few “dumb blonde” moments every day. It’s very amusing. Maybe this is what happens with getting older? Lawrence forgets how old he is, so you’re not that bad.

  25. November 1, 2010 8:46 am

I can’t remember my last name sometimes. Oh and don’t ask me what my license plate number is.

  26. November 1, 2010 9:24 am

That is no reason to feel dumb. I have never even learned my phone number here so when someone asks, I have to ask them to hold while I find it, and this happens often. Then, my phone broke and I had no idea how to contact my husband because I never learned his number either.

  27. November 1, 2010 9:38 am

My Maya is called Mia all the time. As for the grocery store, why do you even think you can go to the store without a list, c’mon. But I bet you remembered to get Maya off to school, get her dressed, prep her halloween uniform and get her lunch ready. There is not enough memory for all the stuff that moms have to remember. It’s like a shoping cart, when too much is loaded stuff falls out.

  28. November 1, 2010 9:40 am

You and all 27 other commenters have made me feel 100% better about myself. And to think that not 3 minutes ago I couldn’t understand what was wrong with this picture:

    http://failblog.org/2010/11/01/epic-fail-photos-costume-spelling-fail-15/?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=feed&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+failblog+%28The+FAIL+Blog+-+Fail+Pictures+%26+Videos+at+Failblog.ORG%29

I googled and googled and could not for the life of me figure out the correct spelling and then it hit me : CENSORED!!! But I was horrified for several minutes as my brain just couldn’t get it!

    Hilarious tags as always.

    • November 2, 2010 7:56 am

If you hadn’t pointed out the spelling mistake, I’m not sure I would have caught it either! I think I was just so shocked by the picture to focus on spelling errors??

  29. November 1, 2010 10:01 am

My memory seems to be shot too! I can’t even blame it on age. I blame it on genetics.

  30. November 1, 2010 10:42 am

Oh yes, that’s your brain on parenting. I often call my son by my cat’s name and my husband by son’s name and so on.

P.S. I wish I could forget who Arnold Schwarzenegger was.

  31. November 1, 2010 11:31 am

Oh I love how real you are Ameena! I’ll be back to comment more. In the middle of running errands. Another one of those crazy days here.

  32. November 1, 2010 12:02 pm

I forgot my zip code yesterday while buying yet another cookbook at Williams Sonoma. It was probably a sign that my brain is handling far too much! But I stood there, for thirty seconds, before making one up!

  33. November 1, 2010 12:18 pm

it happens to me when i am in deep thoughts and the rest of the world just seems too distant. lol you couldn’t tell who was Arnold Shwtchwhatever? hehehehe thats too funny.

well hope you had a good sleep that night =)

  34. November 1, 2010 12:45 pm

    Oh, ALI to the rescue!
I never thought that would be the moral of one of your posts, Ameena.
    dumb things i’ve done recently
    1. Had a meeting last week that i arranged my ENTIRE day around and then forgot to go and only realized i had forgotten when I was walking down the aisles of a random grocery store looking for chocolate and my phone buzzed. Oops.
    2. I tried to compare vegetarianism and slavery in my american history class today.
    don’t ask.
    3. Forgot how to add 9 and 4 in the middle of math class. like i truly could not figure it out. that was embarrassing.
    4. Drank three cups of coffee at 5 pm and then was really surprised when I woke up at 1:30 and couldn’t go back to sleep

Oh and my mom always calls me Joel, Jake or Willy (the dog). Never Rose, ever. (unless shes mad)
    don’t sweat it!

  35. November 1, 2010 1:41 pm

The phone number thing happens to me all the time! I think because it’s so automatic, so if I have to think about it… all over.

  36. November 1, 2010 1:49 pm

Hillarious! I’m forgetful too but like to blame it on Mommy brain. I definitely rely on lists more for sure.

Ha, my brain is a clutter as long as I can remember (if I remember correctly, that is … :D). I appear in my own contact list on my cell phone because I’m never sure about my phone number. And your number (1) point is every day adventure for sure! Therefore I use to write “to buy” lists. If I don’t and just need tomatoes, for example, I’ll likely return with everything but tomatoes. I regularly find myself looking for half of my groceries (didn’t I buy … ?) at home because I forgot to pack it into my bag and take it home from the store. (I bought it though. Gah.) You may also be pleased to hear that I can’t even drive a car, for the simple reason that I can’t concentrate. Too much to distract me from traffic lights, cyclists, other cars, road signs — Oh, look at that bird! And did you see the lovely house over there? And then I also have a lot of day-dreaming going on all the time … So you see how it goes.

  39. November 1, 2010 3:23 pm

Lapses in memory happen to the best of us. I wouldn’t worry about it. It’s from trying to stuff all the things that are going on around us in the world and in our lives into pur heads Some of it’s bound to fall out to make room for the new.

  40. November 1, 2010 5:01 pm

You are so smart to only have one child! My parents gave my sister and I “S” names Sana and Salma. they NEVER get them right.

  41. November 1, 2010 5:15 pm

I’m so glad you posted this. I forgot my SS number a few days ago and had to call the hubster so he could remind me and he was like, “You FORGOT?” like I was insane. Don’t ask how he can remember MY number when I can’t remember my own. So of course, I showed him this post to explain that such behavior is totally normal 🙂 Thanks, friend!

    • November 2, 2010 7:48 am

The weird thing is that I can rattle off my SS#, Ali’s, and even my dad’s. But I could NOT remember my phone number?

  42. November 1, 2010 5:20 pm

Straight up funny! Happy Birthday to your Brother…
So since you brought it up…I will do a quick, so as you really never forget, Brother’s Birthday consequences…
Yep, I went there. And worse, I had been talking to him on the phone for about 2 hours or so (on his B Day). Within 10 min of hanging up with him it hit me (he would have too if he was close enough). Error #2 – wait a few days to call back so the anger has subsided…Did not speak to me for an entire year!
So all in all I say you are doing great 🙂

Totally normal if you ask me 😉 I came home from the shops with milk, bread & a nice piece of steak & when I got home I realised I went there to get some aspirin because I had a headache. The worst thing was when I was ambling around the shops trying to remember what I needed & was mentally visualising my fridge shelves etc I never once thought of the headache. Go figure 😉

  47. November 2, 2010 7:32 am

LOL I am hysterically laughing right now! That was my favorite post to date! You are hilarious! My sister said she can’t remember anything now that she is married with a baby. She said she has just literally lost her mind lol.

    Too funny love this!

  48. November 2, 2010 9:40 am

Hahh this post was hilarious and inspired some great comments. I regularly forget my phone number, or at the very least feel like it sounds wrong. Really dumb things I’ve forgotten:
    1) In high school, I forgot my best friend’s name for about an hour.
    2) In elementary school I forgot which state I was born in. It took me running through the states in my mind to say, “Oh yeah, I was born in GERMANY.”
    3) Recently I forgot my mom’s address – which is the house I lived in for twelve years until last December.

  49. November 2, 2010 9:44 am

OH Ameena you post bring big laugh, this list sounds very familiar, will you believe if i say i have stored my mobile number on my own mobile, named as “same” crap am crazy!

  50. November 2, 2010 11:57 am

  52. November 2, 2010 12:54 pm

Oh, number 1 happens to me all the time. I have something I need to purchase and leave the store with 10 other items, but the one needed. Hahaha… And I have forgotten my own phone number both home and cell phone on a number of occasions. I actually almost wrote down my mom’s cell phone number once on an application and realized what i did a few seconds later.

  53. November 2, 2010 1:17 pm

This might as well have been a blog about me! Especially the bit where you forgot the phone number. Sometimes I wonder if people will think I’ve stolen the phone because I’ve needed to check the number.

  54. November 2, 2010 5:18 pm

Here’s what I want to know–how do you find your own phone number on your phone? If I forgot my number, I’d have to call my husband to ask what it was.

  59. November 3, 2010 4:47 pm

Bill Cosby used to say that we keep our brains in our butts because as soon as we sit back down we remember what we’d gotten up and gone to the other room for. So next time you can’t remember, just sit down.

(My parents used to go through all our names, including our cat and bird, in order to get to the right one of us).

  60. November 3, 2010 8:44 pm

Yeah for remembering your brother’s birthday! That’s a victory, Ameena. Mine is still in tact in a vicious way. Everyone says they have to watch what they say to me because I remember EVERYTHING. Probably because I haven’t had a child yet. I hear it changes then.

Very good blog! Do you have any recommendations for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own site soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you recommend starting with a free platform like WordPress or
go for a paid option? There are so many choices out there that I’m totally overwhelmed ..
    Any ideas? Thanks!

I comment whenever I especially enjoy a post on a site or I have something to contribute to
the discussion. Usually it’s a result of the fire communicated in the article I read.
And after this article I Cant Remember Things Anymore | Fancy That…Fancy This.

I was actually moved enough to post a comment 🙂 I do have 2 questions for you if
it’s allright. Could it be simply me or do a few of these responses come
across like they are left by brain dead people? 😛 And, if you are writing at additional online
social sites, I’d like to follow you. Would you make
a list the complete urls of your community pages like your
Facebook page, twitter feed, or linkedin profile?
