Things I Will Never Understand

March 3, 2010

There are a few things in this world that remain a mystery to me, and probably will stay a mystery until the day I die…

I don’t understand…Ali’s Hamper:

I suppose I should look at this picture and acknowledge the progress that my husband has made…in almost 10 years he’s gone from throwing his clothes on the floor next to the hamper to throwing them on top of the hamper.  Maybe one of these days he’ll graduate to putting his clothes inside the hamper.

I don’t understand…Maya’s Hamper:

Like father, like daughter?  I’ve begged and pleaded for Maya to put her things inside the hamper.  I’ve taken toys away, I’ve sent her to her room, I’ve threatened her with no television, but alas, her dirty clothes still end up on the bathroom floor.

What is with my lazy family?

I don’t understand…Pantene:

What is it exactly that they put in this little bottle that works miracles on the Din household’s hair?

Jillian Michaels told me to stop using products with chemicals in order to Master My Metabolism, and I tried Jillian, I really did!  But nothing calms my hair down like Pantene and faced with dousing my skull with chemicals every day and having good (that is a relative term) hair or living my life with a Target hat permanent stuck to my head, I had no choice but to go with the chemicals.

I don’t understand…Pomegranate Juice:

How can I like pomegranates and juice, but not like pomegranate juice?  For some reason this juice is too concentrated for me.  So I mixed about a quarter cup of the juice with three quarters of a cup of sparking water and ended up enjoying a little mocktail.  All that was missing was a little umbrella for my glass, some lime, and a nice, quiet sandy beach.

Ali has always loved POM straight up and is steadily drinking his way through the supply the nice people at POM Wonderful sent us.  Normally I’d get greedy and hide some in the back of the fridge (where he certainly wouldn’t look) but God knows Ali needs all the antioxidants he can get.

Thank you POM Wonderful for your great products.  My husband’s health thanks you too.

I don’t understand…Vienna:

There are no words to describe my confusion on this one.  Creative post editing?  Jake was drugged?  ABC paid him extra to pick Vienna for the inevitable publicity?  What on earth led him to choose her?

What I really don’t understand is why I watch this show.  I MUST STOP!!

This post made me laugh. Thank you!

Yes, Pomegranate juice is not the best for drinking. I use it as a liquid base for a lot of my smoothies (there is a recipe on my blog). We go through a giant bottle like this every 1-2 weeks. 🙂

  3. March 3, 2010 8:31 pm

The hamper thing was too funny. My hubby is the exact same way. I’m lucky if clothes actually make it to his hamper. Kayla is a little OCD like me though so thank God for that. You win some you lose some. Totally agree about Pantene.

  4. March 3, 2010 9:04 pm

Great thoughts on things you dont understand. I dont understand what in the world chemicals in your hair has to do with your metabolism? and I guess I dont care either because I like pantene too.

    • March 4, 2010 10:13 am

Jillian Michaels says that so many of us are gaining weight, not necessarily because of what we eat, but because of factors around us…chemicals in lotions, cleaners, shampoo, etc. I see her point and really tried to use chemical-free everything but somethings like Windex and Pantene just don’t have acceptable substitutes! Her book is pretty good though!

You crack me up! The bachelor is completely staged…what other reason for Jake thinking with something other than his brain. And I bet if we raided Jillian’s house she’d have some chemically induced products herself.

  10. March 4, 2010 5:18 am

Re: Vienna– I think Jake is actually a much bigger tool than they made him out to be, honestly.

I love pom juice + sparkling water! Feels so fancy 🙂

  11. March 4, 2010 5:37 am

This post completley made my day! 🙂 I’m right there with you on the hamper issue – I don’t understand my fiance’s “hamper” either, which consists of anywhere on the floor anywhere in the house… 🙂 Progressing to on top of the hamper is quite impressive, actually! 🙂

  12. March 4, 2010 5:59 am

I think I’ve mentioned this before here, but my husband is also hamper challenged. In fact, last night I said to him, “Those clothes in the corner of the room—the ones that are neither put away in the closet nor thrown into the hamper—are they clean or dirty?” He told me they were “in between” at which point I instructed him to pick one or the other then put them in their place—and that doesn’t count NEXT TO the hamper, which is his other favorite place to throw clothes. I think men must be one gene short—the one that gives them common sense.

  13. March 4, 2010 6:30 am

Oh I’m completely with you on the POM juice… I can’t stand drinking it straight up so I usually do what you do and mix it with mineral water… but I’m like that with any juice; if it’s too overpowering or thick, I need to dilute it.

    Loved this post 🙂

  14. March 4, 2010 6:32 am

The hamper pictures are cute. May be if people cannot change – the hampers can be changed. Until some inventor comes up with motion sensors on the hamper – I am using the laundry basket instead. Agreed about the Bachelor. Re the shampoo – somone tested the pH on Pantene and it’s a bit on the acidic side that makes hair dryer. May be it suits a certain hair type. I started using Bed Head after the pH test. Well everyone is different for sure. I don’t understand why my daughter likes pink color so much – loves fashion and ballet and nutella – she just won’t give in….. Love your posts.

hahah you had me laughing at the laundry hamper comments. My family does the same thing too (well, my mom and my brothers) and it drives me nuts! I’m one of those type A neat freaks that starts itching at the site of messes (I’m not as psychotic as I sound 😉 )

  16. March 4, 2010 7:44 am

hahah to the hamper comments. i don’t understand how people can not put things in them! my sisters do the same thing and it’s like, ummmm does it really take that much effort to place it in the darn thing! ours don’t even have lids!!

  17. March 4, 2010 8:00 am

Men & laundry don’t ever seem to make sense. Tobey has no problem doing the laundry, but then he puts everything into a pile and avoids folding b/c he “doesn’t like laundry.” We don’t live together, so as you can imagine, those piles remain piles for about two weeks too long.

I don’t understand Vienna, either… Jake seemed so concerned w/ his image, yet he ended up w/ an ex-Hooters waitress??

  18. March 4, 2010 8:11 am

Ha we’re twins. I LOVE LOVE LOVE Pantene. Can’t let it go. Ever. Also – seriously, POM? Not so awesome. Except with Grey Goose and grapefruit juice. Then it’s amazing.

But…uhh…yeah, my hamper looks like Ali’s+Maya’s+a hurricane. You’d hate it!! haha.

  20. March 4, 2010 8:31 am

i dilute my POM too, it is super concentrated! or better yet, i use it in cooking. a little goes a long way. yeah, the hamper sitch in my household used to drive my mom nuts…all i can say is that girls will eventually catch on to proper hamper procedure, but boys are hopeless cases

  21. March 4, 2010 8:44 am

My husband and I are the opposite! I’m hamper challenged and he’s OCD with the hamper!!

  22. March 4, 2010 9:06 am

That is pretty much what our hampers look like. I love all the clutter that accumulates and than just gets stepped over. It is baffling to me.

I feel the same way about POM. I need to have it mixed with something in order for me to enjoy it. I do love the blueberry POM. So good!

  23. March 4, 2010 9:45 am

Haha those hamper pictures cracked me up so much! You know…sometimes tossing a pair of pyjama pants from afar just doesn’t make it in.
And yeahhh I definitely don’t understand Vienna either…

  24. March 4, 2010 9:48 am

the bachelor is addictive. i didn’t watch it this season for that reason.

  25. March 4, 2010 9:55 am

I tried to watch the Bachelor this season because my friend’s sister was on it. She was kicked after one episode and that’s about all I could stomach anyway.

I also don’t like Pom juice, but I do like it with sparkling water! As for Pantene, my hairdresser said they put wax in it, which is why it smooths hair so well. I’m sure it’s not good for it, but whatever. It’s just hair.

I’m fairly certain my husband does not know we have a hamper. Or that’s what you would think judging by his clothes strewn across the floor. I just pretend his side of the room does not exist. Then on laundry day, I tell him to collect his things and give them to me. He never takes the receipts out of his pockets… This I will never understand.

  26. March 4, 2010 10:01 am

I adore this post, Ameena! There are so many things that, I will admit, I don’t understand either; though I never put them into words. I love the fact that you did.

What I don’t understand…why I eat bananas and peanut butter despite the fact that I am allergic to both and require large quantities of Benadryl once consumed. :/

    March 4, 2010 10:05 am

haha my dad does the same thing with his dirty laundry. Its always made my mom crazy! I on the other hand just leave the lid to my laundry basket slightly open. That way I can just ball up my dirty clothes and shove them in there without any extra effort. It might look awful, but whatever.

I LOVE pomegranate juice, but I agree, its very strong! I usually only have a small glass of it at a time.

  28. March 4, 2010 11:33 am

very cute! now you got me thinking about what i don’t understand!
    have a good day!

  29. March 4, 2010 12:06 pm

i have to agree with you on that last one!!! who knew lil miss crazy had a shot??

  30. March 4, 2010 12:38 pm

I love POM juice and hate pomegranate too!

I don’t think their hampers are that bad, you should see my hamper!!! haha

  31. March 4, 2010 12:52 pm

One of my peeves with my hubby is if he puts an empty bottle of soda or water or something in the sink. I’m like, what? Am I supposed to wash it??? Why did’t he throw it in the garbage LOL. Men can be so dumb 😉
    *kisses* HH

  32. March 4, 2010 1:36 pm

HAHA Ari does the same thing! He leaves his jeans on TOP of the hamper, so every time I go to put something in there it’s a big to-do!

  33. March 4, 2010 2:26 pm

A few years ago, someone was telling me all these bad things about Pantene… but I don’t remember what. I just know we haven’t been buying it since!

Ha ha. Someone is sending me a case of POM next week. I’ve never had it!

  34. March 4, 2010 3:35 pm

Haha, Andrew does the SAME thing!! AND, he irks me when he doesn’t close the shower curtain!!!!! Why not just close it?? It’s easy!!!!! He claims the only purpose for the curtain is to keep the water from getting out of the shower and privacy, but I disagree. It’s ALSO to cover up the ugly bathtub and show the pretty shower curtain I paid good money for!! Grrrrrr!! 🙂 haha!! 🙂

I’m getting some POM next week too!! Can’t wait!! 🙂 And I LOVE pantene!! It does work wonders!! 🙂

  35. March 4, 2010 4:15 pm

  39. March 4, 2010 6:42 pm

Oh girl, I couldn’t have said it better myself.

The clothes… oh boy. I’m not married but I live with my parents and my dad.. i don’t know how my mom puts up with it. He literally leaves clothing all OVER the house. A shirt there, pants here, you name it.. drives me INSANE. At least your husband manages to land his in the right vicinity haha

POM – i’ve actually never had an actual pomegranate. I’ve had pomegranate yogurt and I love it and I adore the juice. I like to mix it with sparkling water too but I can drink it straight up.

    Pantene – awesome!!

Vienna- No works. Just no words. I will never, ever, not ever understand that. Seriously. The show? Ridiculous. And I know this. But I just can’t NOT watch, you know?

  41. March 5, 2010 12:30 am

My husband’s still in the ‘Maya hamper’ stage. Maybe someday he’ll progress to the ‘Ali hamper’ stage. Here’s hoping…

  42. March 5, 2010 12:16 pm

I superagree about pantene and the juice. I’m off pantene, because of the whole “vegan” thing and because tea tree really helps dandruff. But I used to be a huge devotee to it. My sisters still are. As for the pom, YES, it’s very strong. It’s very sweet too. Recently I read in an issue of Nutrition Action that, so far, there haven’t been any significant studies done on its benefits for us anyway. That may be something to consider, next time you are choking down a bottle of the stuff! 🙂

  43. March 5, 2010 3:47 pm

At least your husband makes an attempt to get his clothes near a hamper.

I’ve bought Mr. Spice tons of hampers and he insists on leaving piles of clothes everywhere but in the hampers.

Nothing like going to do laundry and stepping in dirty boxers. Yechh.

  44. March 6, 2010 7:25 am

I’m totally with you on POM. I just can’t get used to it!!

    …or Vienna…

  45. March 8, 2010 12:39 pm

I laughed when I saw your comment about the pomegranate juice. It’s definitely an acquired taste. You’re a strong writer and you have an excellent blog here. I’ve enjoyed reading through it.
