bullet points

November 6, 2013

I just learned, from a reader, that I’m “overly fond” of bullet points.

So I’m obviously confused that someone is concerning themselves with my use of bullet points. Especially as:

  • I didn’t realize bullet points could be overused.
  • I had no idea that something so insignificant could trouble someone.
  • I am a productive member of society. And that should count for something (grasping at straws here).

And when it comes down to it, my bullet points do nothing but benefit my readers. This thanks to the fact they provide:

  • An appealing visual sense.
  • The summarization (is this a word?) of my posts about nothing in particular.
  • The ability to expeditiously scan my posts about nothing in particular.
  • Etc.
  • Etc.
  • Etc.

In any case, I’m not going to deny that I like bullet points. And here’s why:

  • Bullet points feed my need for Order and Neatness. And we’ve already established that I’m all over that.
  • Bullet points allow my posts about nothing to be far more considerable. From a length standpoint at least (note “Etc.” above).

So I’m thinking that instead of being reprimanded? My overuse of bullet points should be:

  • embraced.

    -concise
    -to the point

If all someone can comment about is your use of bullet points that probably says more about them than you! X

Well, if bullet points is your writing style, I say go with it daaahling. Thats the cool thing about having your own blog, its all about you. There’s no right or wrong. My style is high maintenance and egocentric girly with delusions of grandeur LOL and you know what:
    *its awesome
    * its fun
    * everyone else can bit me if they don’t like it
    Never change, bullet points forevaaaaa

Delusions of grandeur…I think we all have those!

Bullet points for evaaaa…I love it.

PS: Ali ate the pot de creme. The whole thing!

Wow! Can’t belie that someone could have a problem with bullet points. Even I like bullet points. I have been writing with bullet points for as long as I can remember. Just love the pictures from the museum 🙂

  5. November 6, 2013 5:42 am

Ha ha ha ha! Touché, Ms din, touché!

    • November 6, 2013 5:41 pm

Thank you Razwana… love that you called me Ms. Din.

  6. November 6, 2013 6:06 am

haha, love the ending! Keep blogging with or without bullet points 🙂

    • November 6, 2013 5:41 pm

I will keep blogging with extra bullet points… 🙂

  7. November 6, 2013 6:08 am

    – This was hilarious.
    – I love bullet points.

    • November 6, 2013 5:41 pm

Thanks Lail! Glad you share my love for the bullet points.

  8. November 6, 2013 6:22 am

Ha, this was delightfully snarky. And bulletpoints are a wonderful thing! Also – hey, it’s your blog! You could write posts in all-caps and we shouldn’t complain. (Although that would be awful. Please don’t do that.)

    • November 6, 2013 5:42 pm

I wouldn’t do the ALL CAPS thing! I promise. 🙂

And thanks for appreciating my snarkiness!

One must utilize bullet points (especially on grocery lists)
They are key to good organizational habits
They help keep OCD at bay
And they just make you feel good
Think of how much better my post would look with them
Now it’s just a haphazard mess

    • November 6, 2013 5:43 pm

Love this Seana. I totally agree that the bullet points keep OCD at bay. They really do make me feel good! Sad but true.

I can’t believe someone emailed you about that! HAHA!

Personally, I love your use of bullet points. Use them all you want, Ameena!

    • November 6, 2013 5:43 pm

Thank you Parita! So glad you embrace my love of bullet points.

  12. November 6, 2013 8:05 am

OMG. I love bullet point. If I could I would have my conversations in bullet points.

    • November 6, 2013 5:44 pm

I would LOVE to have a conversation in bullet points. Hysterical!

  13. November 6, 2013 8:31 am

Some people have too much time on their hands if they can pick on things like that. Honestly, I didn’t notice you using bullet points at all (though I’ll notice it from now on 😉 )

However – full stops (periods, I think for you yankee guys). You use waaaay too many full stops. Please stop or I’ll have a tantrum. 😉

    • November 6, 2013 5:44 pm

Full stops? I’ve never heard that term before.

So do you mean that I use fragments? Are my sentences too short?

I love bullet points and use it all the time too! It makes my points across better. Wow and someone was actually emailing you about that? People needs to have a life.

    On another more important point:
    – you are so brave for chaperoning the whole class to a museum!
    – I salute you Ameena 🙂

    • November 6, 2013 5:45 pm

Love your bullet points Lydia. And the fact that you saluted me! Not sure anyone has ever done that before.

      Love the comment as always!

  15. November 6, 2013 9:08 am

-that photo of you and maya is so great!
-it’s nice when field trips are more fun for the parents than the kids haha–that must have required some patience. i swear you’ve gone totally zen since your nyc move 😉

    • November 6, 2013 5:45 pm

NYC has brought out some really interesting traits…not sure I’ll go so far as to say I’m zen but I’m way closer than I was in LA!

  16. November 6, 2013 9:28 am

    I like bullet points because:
    -its easy to read
    -looks very neat
-whoever said bullet points are so cool, are actually not cool 😛

    • November 6, 2013 6:07 pm

So easy to read. So neat to look at.

      I love this comment Dixya!

  17. November 6, 2013 11:10 am

I think bullet points are awesome. I may be guilty of overusing them in work e-mails, but you know what – when I delegate tasks, they get done. Enough said!

PS. Are you getting younger? Adorable pic of you and Maya.
PPS. I’ve missed reading your posts!

    • November 6, 2013 6:08 pm

I LOVE using bullet points at work. Totally makes me less wordy.

Am I getting younger? I wish. But I appreciate you thinking so. Thank you for reading my friend!

  18. November 6, 2013 11:23 am

Bullet points are the reason I mostly got Bs instead of As in Journalism school. I have used bullet points on anniversary cards to my husband so yeah, that alone should demonstrate how important they are to me. They also feed my OCD and type A tendencies, which I know we both share. All in all … Bullet points for the win!!!

    • November 6, 2013 6:14 pm

Really, are they not Journalism-approved? How interesting.

Bullet points for the win! Absolutely.

  19. November 6, 2013 11:53 am

I would probably still read even if you wrote every post in all caps because you’re so funny. Plus you’re my friend. (I can say that now that we’ve met IRL). 😉

    • November 6, 2013 6:15 pm

Of course I’m your friend! Can’t wait to visit you in Paris again. Still thinking of our Laduree lunch…it was amazing.

  20. November 6, 2013 12:14 pm

Bullet points are awesome! In fact they are so great I am going to give you some just cause I like you so much

P.S: You look great in the pic 🙂

    • November 6, 2013 6:15 pm

Thank you HM! I appreciate the compliment. And of course the bullet points. 🙂

  21. November 6, 2013 12:27 pm

It makes me happy when you call people out for being jerks. I like it. 🙂

Also, I love bullet points. They’re efficient, and that’s important.

    • November 6, 2013 6:16 pm

It’s all about efficiency, right? Love that you agree Leah!

  22. November 6, 2013 1:33 pm

    I love bullet points because:
    – they
    – are
    – awesome…seriously :)!

  23. November 6, 2013 2:59 pm

Some people just have too much time on their hands and should be ignored. Period!!

    • November 6, 2013 6:17 pm

If I had time to worry about someone else’s bullet points? I wouldn’t be worrying about their bullet points!

      If that makes any sense.

  24. November 6, 2013 5:37 pm

Bullet points are very reader friendly and concise. I actually need to figure out a way to use them more often!!

  25. November 6, 2013 6:44 pm

whoever dissed bullet points has never put a presentation together. Its the best way to succinctly put your points across – as you have!!! 🙂
Love your pic with Maya – gorgeous!
Still owe you an email – lets try to meet up soon.

    • November 12, 2013 5:05 pm

I would love to Archana! A weekend lunch maybe?

And love your use of the word succinctly. Such a great word.

  28. November 7, 2013 3:33 pm

I’m all for bullet points! its after all used to make a point. bullet points away, my friends. there’s many weirdos out there to take offense on ridiculousness, so why bother? 😀

  29. November 7, 2013 7:20 pm

I like your bullet points 🙂

  30. November 7, 2013 8:45 pm

LOL!!!!!! Loved this response and various other comments above.

  31. November 7, 2013 10:30 pm

I am firmly in the pro-bullet point camp. Not surprisingly, I am also fond of lists, particularly those with neat little boxes that allow me to check things off as I go – makes me feel productive. Continue on with your bullet point-loving style!

    • November 12, 2013 5:11 pm

I make lists and make my own check boxes. Love lists. Love bullet points.

That first picture is probably one of my favorite pictures of you. And I continue to think your blog is one of the funniest and most creative blogs out there. Are you winning awards yet? Love to you Ameena, I love seeing you on Instagram as well. So fun. Take care,

-Shauna (the dash is to embrace the bullet point…since I couldn’t figure out how to make a bullet point…hahahahahaha!!)

    • November 12, 2013 5:12 pm

So glad I could make you laugh Shauna! You really do leave the best, most thoughtful comments, which I LOVE to read.

No awards but this comment is even better. 🙂

  33. November 8, 2013 12:28 am

I wanted to say bullet points are the bomb. But that’s the wrong sort of ammunition.
Suffice to say I like them.

  34. November 8, 2013 9:48 am

Look, it could be worse: you could be using Comic Sans MS. 😉

I love that picture of you and Maya – so sweet!

    • November 12, 2013 5:13 pm

Comic Sans MS. I love it.

      And thanks for the compliment!

    • November 12, 2013 5:13 pm

Thank you for the compliment and the comment Fran!

  36. November 8, 2013 1:12 pm

LOL!!! OMG, whoever said that to you must be reading this and being like WHAT? She turned this into a post? Hilarious! I wish Fig and Olive was in Midtown West too, I really like their tartines, there is one with artichoke and/or mushroom that I love.
Anyway, let’s plan lunch in Dec at Maison.. I can walk there, preferably Thurs or Friday though. Or whatever works.

Hope you have a great weekend Ameena.

    • November 12, 2013 5:14 pm

      I love F & O’s crostini too…so good.

Maison would be great! Would a weekend work? I’m working too far away to do lunch on the week days now!

  37. November 8, 2013 3:28 pm

its my bread and butter to use bullet points whilst making presentations at work ( and fancy ones are not allowed)
I completely understand and appreciate the use of bullets points to drive home a point.
Its a list maker’s master tool

    • November 12, 2013 5:15 pm

Absolutely…a list maker’s master tool. So well said!

  38. November 9, 2013 3:00 am

This is the one thing I love about your posts, is the bullet points. Easy to read, you make your point clear, no messing around. Keep it up!

  39. November 9, 2013 8:50 am

I love bullet points and i love that you use them in your posts. I use bullet points even in an email argument ( i figured its easier to get myself heard via email with my tech savvy husband than talk):)

    • November 12, 2013 5:15 pm

Email argument? I am so intrigued! Please tell me more. 🙂

      • November 12, 2013 6:23 pm

Oh it’s simple:) I’ve come to realize that’s its a waste of my time and energy to talk when the other party is always busy on twitter or trying out a new gadget:) so emails are better because it helps defuse the immediate anger, i can be more careful with choice of words, can be concise ( bullet points) and my husband will most definitely read them because its on his computer, phone and tablet and I will get a response:)

      • November 13, 2013 7:27 am

This is brilliant. Seriously, I think I should conduct all conversation with Ali via email so I can control my temper and / or defuse my anger and / or get his attention.

        Love this.

I’ll admit that Is saw this on FB and thought you were against bullet points (which I love) and was scared I was going to be told I had to stop. Happy to see you’re pro bullet point. To your reader, what do you have against lists?

    • November 12, 2013 5:17 pm
