more sickness

October 30, 2013

Last Monday morning I woke up to the sound of a sniffle and the slightest hint of a cough.

These sounds put the fear of God in me.

Now if these sniffles had been originating from Maya’s room I would have been okay. I’d have bundled her on the couch with the iPad, the TV, a receptacle for the impending vomit, and I’d have called it a day.

At Oceana Restaurant, minutes after Ali started feeling better, and minutes before I started feeling horrible.

At Oceana Restaurant, minutes after Ali started feeling better, and minutes before I started feeling horrible.

But the sounds were not originating from Maya’s room. They were originating from our room. So obviously, things were much worse.

Because Ali was sick.

Ali : “Can you pick up 8 lemons, Sudafed, and peppermint tea?”

My Running Commentary : 8 lemons? Are we preparing to battle the bubonic plague for @#$’s sake?”

What I Really Said : “Sure, no problem.”

At Oceana (one of my new favorite places in NY): Pumpkin Salad, Halibut, Grouper, Cookies

At Oceana (one of my new favorite places in NY): Pumpkin Salad, Halibut, Cookies, Grouper (the highlight).

The next few days followed in a blur of :

  • half cut lemons and seeds all over the kitchen counters,
  • towels and tea bags from makeshift steam sites in the kitchen and bathroom,
  • and remarkably absurd questions like, “Where can I buy soup?”

On Sunday morning I woke up sick.

Not unexpected when one is forced to clean up the lemons, seeds, towels, and tea bags, from one battling the plague.

Mexican food at Dos Caminos and Toloache. I recommend both but don't go to the latter hungry and be prepared to pay $6 per shrimp. Their portions are tiny.

Mexican food at Dos Caminos and Toloache. I recommend both but don’t go to the latter hungry. Oh and be prepared to pay $6 per shrimp. Their portions are tiny and expensive.

Nobody cared. Also not unexpected.

If anything, I made muffins, scrubbed the trash can (self-inflicted punishment), and continued to field more absurd questions like, “How do I prevent you from getting me sick again?” and “Do you think the flu shot would be a good idea now?”

I swear, I can’t make this stuff up.

Feeling your pain! Get well soon

    • October 30, 2013 5:46 pm

Thank you Amanda! I hope you aren’t sick too.

      • October 31, 2013 12:40 am

Only a cold! It’s half term though so I’ve been rotten to the poor kids. Just waiting for hubbie to get it now so I can completely ignore him back!

  2. October 30, 2013 12:52 am

The weather change in my part of the world too has brought with it flu and other ailments. Not the best time of the year, I must say.
Hope all of you feel better soon. Take care

  3. October 30, 2013 4:35 am

How funny! The first thing I thought of was, “8 lemons?”

  4. October 30, 2013 4:46 am

Bubonic plague indeed LOL! You crack me up daaahling!
You must take me to Oceana when I’m in NYC. Im intrigued by that cookie plate. Speaking of cookies, have you been to Levain yet??? OMG, death by cookie goodness, I swear.
    *kisses* H

I’ve seen Levain but there is always a line! Can’t get myself to wait in the line. Yet.

Men and their illnesses. When a man is sick it is as if no one in the history of the universe has ever felt as badly. When a woman is sick, she is expected to carry on with everything (or she just does carry on because she is an adult, not an infant). Hope you all are feeling better.

    • October 30, 2013 5:49 pm

“or she just does carry on because she is an adult, not an infant.” So so true. Couldn’t agree more Heather!

  7. October 30, 2013 6:39 am

too funny. hope you’re feeling better!

  8. October 30, 2013 7:05 am

Yup pretty much life as usual when Mom is sick. “Sick days” such a fantasy. What did Ali do with the lemons? Is that obvious and I missed it?

    • October 30, 2013 5:50 pm

He squeezed them and then drank them straight up. Multiple times a day. To kill bacteria. I hear it works but he was sick for DAYS so not sure how effective it is.

8 lemons? That’s what I first thought too. My husband is the opposite, when he’s sick he refuses to take any medication, which is annoying because that means he stays sick (& whine) longer!! 🙂 Get well soon Ameena. At least Maya is not sick. Yay for that!
That halibut & grouper look sooooo good!

    • October 30, 2013 5:51 pm

Maya was sick for 5 minutes but that kid bounces back FAST (knock on wood). So lucky to have her. 🙂

The grouper was amazing! If you come to the city I hope you give Oceana a try.

Oh dear! That’s my household since this morning. Rohan has fallen sick and you can very well guess who is next! And true no one will care. I love that you still went out to eat. We would be shutdown like the government at the slightest hint of a cold. And by we I mean my husband !

    • October 30, 2013 5:51 pm

So funny…love the government shut down analogy.

Hope Rohan is doing better and that you don’t get sick too Archana!

Aww, I hope you feel better soon, Ameena 😦 I wonder why it is that many husbands are helpless when sick, while we power through because we have to? I totally believe you’re not making any of this up!

    • October 30, 2013 5:52 pm

So glad you know I’m not making this stuff up. People accuse me of doing so.

      Especially my husband…

  12. October 30, 2013 8:58 am

theraflu! always works and gives a lovely high.

    • October 30, 2013 5:53 pm

Hmmm…not sure why Theraflu hasn’t made it’s way into Ali’s vast arsenal of medication. Thank you for the suggestion Eva!

  13. October 30, 2013 9:38 am

Feel better soon! And I too thought, why does he need 8 lemons! Haha.

  14. October 30, 2013 9:57 am

hot tea lemon and honey, even for mom….

    • October 30, 2013 5:53 pm

The tea has definitely been helping Laurie! Thank you for the comment. 🙂

  15. October 30, 2013 12:20 pm

    Feel better soon!

  16. October 30, 2013 2:53 pm

Amazing how men are when they get sick! Hope you start feeling healthy soon : )

  17. October 30, 2013 2:59 pm

“Where can I buy soup?” <—haha!

    Hope you feel better :)!

    • October 30, 2013 5:54 pm

Random, right? I mean, we live in NY where there’s a soup place on every corner….

  18. October 30, 2013 4:16 pm

‘Tis the season. Hoping you feel better soon. The household will fall apart if you are out of commission too long. I’m feeling a tickle in my nose. I’m really hoping it goes away.

    • October 30, 2013 5:55 pm

I’m really hoping it goes away too CeCe! Luckily I’m feeling better already.

Thank you for the comment, as always. 🙂

  19. October 30, 2013 9:09 pm

Hope you’re feeling better Ameena. I was down with the flu this past week too so I give you extra credit for being able to continue being SuperMom/Wife when you aren’t feeling great….all I wanted was to stay in bed and be pampered :)!

    • October 31, 2013 5:42 pm

I hope you are feeling better Khushboo! I’m glad that someone was pampered…even if I wasn’t. LOL

  20. October 30, 2013 11:24 pm

Firstly, I hope you are back to feeling well!
Second, you scrub your trash can?! Is this something one is supposed to do as a part of home maintenance? Or did it have to do with the sickness?
Third, I want some of that pumpkin salad.

    • October 31, 2013 5:43 pm

I do scrub my trash can because I am extremely OCD about germs and I feel like the trash can is a breeding ground for really nasty things.

Plus my husband and child can’t seem to get the trash IN the trash can 100% of the time. It’s a real problem.

You are always a crack up. I love your posts. Glad you are better now, I hope? That is so funny that he asked if it would be a good idea to get the flu shot, “now.” 🙂 Glad you’re loving New York. And I love to see you on Instagram. Take care,

    Shauna xo

Thank you Shauna! I always love your comments. 🙂 Instagram is the best.

  22. October 31, 2013 2:13 am

You’re just wonderful Ameena – hope you’re well now 🙂

    • October 31, 2013 5:44 pm

Thank you Ken…I am doing much better. I appreciate the very nice comment!

  23. October 31, 2013 4:31 am

Men are NOT good patients…every little thing is a crisis or as you say…the Plague! The only good news is, now that Ralph doesn’t smoke cigars any more, he gets sick less. He’s not any better at being a patient, he just doesn’t need to be nursed as often. Hope you’re feeling better!

    • October 31, 2013 5:45 pm

Well the awesome thing is the quit smoking! The silver lining is you don’t have to take care of him as much.

      Everybody wins!

      • November 1, 2013 4:40 am

He stopped smoking on his own, but it took the plague to do it. Have a great day, Ameena!

      • November 1, 2013 7:36 am

No matter what the reason, it’s great he stopped smoking! You have a great day too. 🙂

Giggling! Now I know why you married Ali. Comic fodder!

    PS Get well soon!

  26. October 31, 2013 1:52 pm

omg, i’m dreading getting sick. i”m so paranoid. Awww.. hope you feel better Ameena. I actually really liked the chicken tacos at Tolacche.. not their guac, but I liked the drinks and tacos. Dos Caminos has amazing guac and drinks for sure. 🙂

    • October 31, 2013 5:47 pm

Ali really liked the chicken tacos, he just said they were too small. And we couldn’t get ourselves to pay $13 for guacamole at Dos Caminos…so no guac for us!

We are cheap about the dumbest things…

  27. October 31, 2013 2:10 pm

Yikes! So sorry you aren’t well now 😦 I dread the flu or cold season. Hopefully I get to escape it soon, due to travels. Or am I risking it myself with all the travels?!? Eww..

Feel better soon love and leave the cleaning for another day. xo

    • October 31, 2013 5:47 pm

Traveling is almost always the gateway to sickness! I think it’s the seat belts. Seriously.

  28. October 31, 2013 3:53 pm

Aww hope you feel better soon. I swear I have been asked the “Do you think the flu shot would be a good idea now?” question. Are Amit and Ali related and we don’t know about it. Maybe they are some sort of soul brothers if there is such a thing.
You should write a post about most irritating things I get asked when I am sick. Heck I could probably even co-write it with you!

    • October 31, 2013 5:48 pm

I think that would be the LONGEST post in the world. I have a list of irritating things a mile long. Hysterical.

If you come to NY we’ll get Amit and Ali together. And then we’ll just laugh.

  29. November 1, 2013 5:40 am

    Hi Ameena,
    Hope you feel better soon!

  30. November 2, 2013 9:38 am

I love your posts so much – you always make me laugh.

  31. November 4, 2013 2:26 pm

aww Ameena this is a funny post. i hope you are feeling much better now. love.xx

  32. November 4, 2013 5:40 pm

I swear, men and their colds…such babies! I think you should give equally absurd answers to his questions. 😉 I hope you feel better soon!

    • November 6, 2013 11:42 am

Thank you Megan…I am feeling much better now. 🙂

And yes to the absurd answers. Must think of some. Many!

  33. November 4, 2013 6:02 pm

Ugh! I hope you’re feeling better. Time for the hubby to pamper you! And please tell me about the Levain cookies if you ever get a chance to try one…they are much more mounded than the ones I made and I’m curious about the texture 🙂

    • November 6, 2013 11:43 am

I will let you know…I promise to brave the Levain line one of these days!

  34. November 5, 2013 8:06 am

    hope you are feeling better.

  35. November 5, 2013 10:20 pm

I’m getting sick too, after watching so many little kids. They are so full of germs and pass it around so easily. The worst is having to take care of other people while you are sick. Make sure Ali caters to your every needs! Be careful.

    • November 6, 2013 11:45 am

Totally agree that it’s hard to take care of others when you are sick yourself!

Actually, it’s just hard for me to take care of others in general… 🙂

  36. November 9, 2013 4:47 am

Hope you are feeling better now Ameena. Weather is changing here too and we are all getting sick as well. Especially since after all the Diwali fire crackers totally polluted the skies.
Hope Ali takes care of you!!
