not a techie

October 24, 2012

My husband informed me last week that not only has my blog content taken a turn for the worse, but that my pictures are random and crappy. Since he can apparently do better, I suggested that he take over this week. And here’s what he came up with*:

I Am Not a Techie

Hi Everyone – this is Ali. Ameena is preoccupied with work/whatever it is that keeps her busy and she handed the reins over to me. So I figure this is an ideal time to absolve myself of at least one of her many unfounded accusations. And in this particular post, I’d like to show you why I am not a technology geek.

Just because I happen to have a few extra devices, cords, and cables, doesn’t mean I’m fixated on them. Or that I even know what all of them do. I just like to keep these things around in the event I have to connect to something new or different.

Example: A few weekends ago we were at a friend’s house and they wanted to connect their iPod to their stereo. And guess what? I had the perfect cable stashed in my trunk. (Ameena thought this was hysterical but I’m not sure why being prepared is such a crime.)

I bet you’re all thinking, okay fine, I sort of see the point of cables…but what’s your excuse for all the devices you collect? Well what my wife fails to mention is that I’m not waiting in line for 2 hours to get the latest gadget. I just happen to be in an industry where I have access to these things.

After all, if I sell technology, I have to test it and know how it works, right?

So there you have it…I’m not a techie but a person who is involved in technology for valid, work-related reasons. Much in the same way Ameena claims watching HGTV is “research” for her work in reality TV.

The only difference? I don’t have a blog forum to make fun of her obsession with Million Dollar Listing.

*This post was (of course) somewhat edited by Ameena for truth, clarity, grammar, structure, focus, and length. The picture was beyond help.

Hilarious note by Ameena….Loved it the most.

  2. October 24, 2012 12:20 am

Hmm, some people keep spare cables to jump start their engines, some carry emergency ipod gear…
Perhaps, Ali, you should devote yourself to a life of tech good samaritan deeds. Like a superhero, you just happen to show up at the scene of tech tragedy and save the day.
And maybe you could wear a cape. For good measure.

    • October 24, 2012 3:36 am

Hahhahhahahaha. Yes. What she said. Plus, who’s NOT obsessed with Million Dollar Listing? Just sayin.

    • October 25, 2012 11:32 am

Ali – you never longer have to search for a Halloween costume! You can be a Technology Superstar. Cape and all.

      Love this idea Ellen.

And Heather, I am hoping and praying that Million Dollar Listing starts up again soon….I need a fix.

  3. October 24, 2012 12:21 am

This is one of your best posts Ameena!! Very well written 🙂

  4. October 24, 2012 1:58 am

HAHA I love your posts Ameena but think Ali should guest post more often! Techie geek or not, I’m jealous that you have all these devices at your disposal…and a walking/talking manual! If the product is not Apple (i.e. user friendly), I am unfortunately not as savvy as I’d like to think. Actually I am sure even with my Apple products, I am not making the most out of all they have to offer.

    • October 24, 2012 4:49 pm

Thank you for the compliment. I will work on a few more cameos.

    • October 25, 2012 11:33 am

I am definitely not making most of what they have to offer either Khushboo…somehow I just don’t have the patience to read the manual?

  5. October 24, 2012 2:57 am

Ali, I was totally with you, while reading your post, but the limelight was taken away by Ameena’s footnote, at the end, and the last words ‘beyond help’ is the final nail in the coffin as far as this post goes and freedom to write.

I do you a deal Ali, I’ll create a tech-blog, and as and when you get your hands on latest gadgets, you simply write a post and I’ll publish it for you – what do you say?

    • October 24, 2012 4:50 pm

I’m glad Ameena is the superior writer and can out-shine me. But I will take you up on that blog-deal offer. 🙂

    • October 25, 2012 11:34 am

If there is anything I excel at it’s putting the final nail into a coffin. It’s an inherent talent!

      • October 25, 2012 1:45 pm

‘inherent talent’ I think deserves a dedicated post altogether. You can’t have two people sat in one driving seat and in control of the car.

  6. October 24, 2012 3:43 am

I see what Ali is saying if you say the amount of food “for work” I buy/have/whip out at weird times one could say mean things.

  7. October 24, 2012 4:26 am

If only I could get Ralph involved…just a little…in technology so that I can tell him something about the computer without having to explain everything! He has a very old flip type phone and if one of his niece’s send him a text…I have to retrieve it and reply!! Help!! Maybe if the stand next to each other, some of Ali’s knowledge will miraculously be transferred to Ralph. He’d have some and Ali would have a little less!! 😉

    • October 25, 2012 11:37 am

My dad used to have a flip phone but then Ali gave him a new one and poof! My dad entered the current century and fell in love with the new technology. Maybe you can buy Ralph a new phone as a gift?

  8. October 24, 2012 4:34 am

so i guess you have a valid reason for people to buy the Ipad mini??? I just cannot grasp the concept! btw great picture LOL

    • October 24, 2012 4:51 pm

I see no reason for the mini – but that’s me. And I was very against the touching of the iphone when it came out (now I cannot leave it) and same goes for what Maya called the big iphone (ipad) but it makes doing work easier.

    • October 25, 2012 11:38 am

I see no reason for the mini either, aside from the fact that Apple needs to offer something to get it’s undying fans waiting in long lines…

  9. October 24, 2012 6:53 am

Nice to meet you Ali! Great post 🙂

  10. October 24, 2012 7:34 am

I guess everyone has a hobby.. Be careful though Ali, you don’t want to be known as a (cable) hoarder 😉

    • October 24, 2012 4:53 pm

I am already labeled and accused as one – so I cannot free myself of that description.

  11. October 24, 2012 7:36 am

You’re lucky you have the work excuse, Ali!! 🙂

    • October 25, 2012 11:38 am

He sure is…otherwise his gadgets might mysteriously disappear…

  12. October 24, 2012 8:37 am

LOL Ali….Hmmm I am not sure if I am convinced. My little bro could be your bestie bc he has a cable for everything. Ameena, i’m with you on your thoughts about the pic (common Ali ummmm a little more creativity please). 😉

    • October 24, 2012 4:54 pm

Trying to be creative… I was going to introduce the first video on Ameena’s blog but she didnt go for it.

    • October 25, 2012 11:39 am

A video of technology? Talk about a way to lose readers. 🙂

  13. October 24, 2012 9:07 am

Can Ali please tell me which tablet I should buy? And if I should pay the extra money and get one with 4G or if I am better off just getting a mobile hotspot and using that to establish internet connectivity to the tablet that doesn’t have 4G and is cheaper? (We live in the middle of nowhere and thus internet connection is a bit of a challenge…) Thanks Ali. Even though I know you are not a tech-y.

    • October 24, 2012 4:55 pm

Given we are on Ameena’s blog – the height of sarcasm… I am not sure if you are really asking me or making a point 🙂 — Email Ameena and I’m happy to help (in short: mifi is better so you can connect multiple devices)

      • October 25, 2012 1:32 pm

Thanks (wasn’t being sarcastic). Will pursue mifi. I assume that is the same as a hotspot, but I can Google that for confirmation…

      • October 28, 2012 11:07 pm

Yes – a mifi is I think specific to verizon. But it is a mobile hot spot, so you can connect usually 5 different devices (multiple phones, tablets, computers) so it is more handy than the ipad having its own 3g/4g connection.

    • October 25, 2012 11:40 am

Ali loves his mi-fi and I won’t lie…I appreciate it when we are on a trip and can avoid paying $30 a day for Internet access!

      • October 25, 2012 1:33 pm

How can people justify charging $30 a day for internet access? They don’t charge an extra $30 a day for the electricity to work in your hotel room… or the water for that matter! Crooks!

  14. October 24, 2012 9:08 am

    Ohhhh man. So funny!

  15. October 24, 2012 9:18 am

Well, I can relate to this completely. Seeing as my husband is a computer engineer we have all of the latest and greatest cables, technology, etc. Once in awhile I get on him to go through the many boxes of which these things are stashed. It works sometimes. 🙂 Ali has some very valid points for sure. Same with my husband is that he brings homes stuff before the public has really had a chance to buy it. I still can’t all of the cables and wires, they just clash with all of my decor….? My husband could have written this post, accept he really is a techie….hahahahaha. Love,

    Shauna xoxoxoxoxo

    • October 25, 2012 11:41 am

Once in a while I get Ali to go through his cable stash as well, but then things just seem to multiply! It’s very strange…

  16. October 24, 2012 9:49 am

“I had the perfect cable stashed in my trunk.” I’m sorry, but Ameena’s right: That is pretty funny!

  17. October 24, 2012 9:55 am

I laughed so hard at that picture – thank you for that. I don’t know if I should address Ali or Ameena in this comment, so I’ll address both.

Ali – You should have a blog making fun of Ameena watching Million Dollar Listing, and whatever else you can come up with. Only fair, right? Also, you’re still a techie, but that doesn’t need to be a BAD thing. Another also, the blog has not taken a turn for the worse.

Ameena – The blog has not taken a turn for the worse. Your husband is still a techie. I would have laughed too had someone pulled a random (yes, random) cable from their car in assistance of an iPod crisis.

Both of you – Stay excellent! 🙂

    • October 24, 2012 4:57 pm

I would need an encyclopedia to note all of Ameena’s “quirks”.

      just kidding.

    • October 25, 2012 11:42 am

First of all, thank you for not thinking my blog has taken a turn for the worse. It has seen better days for sure!! But it’s not really worth spending more time on when I can be watching Million Dollar Listing, right?

And yes, Ali is kidding. But I do have an encyclopedia of quirks and it’s only fair that he blog about them. I know he won’t but I wouldn’t mind if he did!

Love this! (Although the footnote was the best 😉 ) And I just want to be clear that your blog is fabulous and still is, Ameena!

Btw, I’m still cracking up about that last photo, omg XD

    • October 25, 2012 11:43 am

Thank you Jessie! So glad that you think my blog is fabulous…and so nice of you to say so!

  19. October 24, 2012 10:02 am

you guys are just too cute. I cant stop laughing!!!

Hi Ali the non-techie, are there any good music players on the market that aren’t iPods? I loathe my iPod and am in the market for something new.

    • October 24, 2012 4:59 pm

I am not that in the know on the music scene. I run pandora on my iphone and am very happy with that. No more satellite radio.

    • October 25, 2012 11:44 am

A few years ago Ali’s dad gifted me a tiny Samsung mp3 player that he’d bought overseas. I love it! Not sure if it’s still for sale but I thought I’d throw that out there!

  21. October 24, 2012 12:07 pm

Not a techie? A likely story! You guys crack me up!!

  22. October 24, 2012 3:27 pm

Oh sure…it’s “work related”. You know what they say… “he who smelt it, dealt it”.

    • October 25, 2012 11:44 am

That is one of Maya’s favorite quotes! Except she’s not talking about technology…

  23. October 24, 2012 3:39 pm

Love it. I think the HGTv analogy works well in this case!

    • October 25, 2012 11:45 am

Maybe…but isn’t HGTV far more interesting than a bunch of cables??

  24. October 24, 2012 3:52 pm

    BRILLIANT !!!

  26. October 24, 2012 7:57 pm

Haha! I’m Ameena’s biggest fan but this is a touch of touchee!!

    • October 25, 2012 11:46 am

I’m just going to focus on the fact that you are a fan. Love that! 🙂

hahaha I love that Ali just happened to have the right cable in his trunk. But really, why wouldn’t you?

    • October 25, 2012 11:46 am

Much in the same way one would have reusable bags or Kleenex, right?

  28. October 24, 2012 10:42 pm

The public demands a regular feature by Ali! Think of all the topics he could cover- cars, cables, how (not) to microwave soup. I’d read it 🙂

    • October 25, 2012 11:47 am

Now my husband’s ego is going to be unmanageable!

      • October 28, 2012 5:02 pm

I cannot help it if I offer a different view, usually more accurate – so I will take it upon myself to make more appearances.

  29. October 25, 2012 2:10 am

Nice to finally hear from your Ali after hearing so much ABOUT you! Ameena is a wonderful woman but you have my sympathies for the whithering looks I suspect you get – I get them from my wonderful woman too! 🙂

    • October 25, 2012 11:47 am

I sympathize that Ali has to put up with me…no need to sugar coat it Ken!!

      • October 25, 2012 11:48 pm

No sugar-coating intended at all Ameena! And I’m not saying Ali probably isn’t guilty of all you mildly poke him about. I’m just one husband who does the same and gets the same. The difference is that I’m glad my wife doesn’t write a blog! My reputation would be in tears!

  30. October 25, 2012 6:57 am

Ali, you are thoroughly absolved for all of the above. But then you were forgiven and understood even before you guest posted. Everyone knows Ameena is perfectly unreasonable.

    😉

    • October 25, 2012 11:47 am

Perfectly Reasonable. Exactly. Not sure why nobody around here gets that?

    • October 28, 2012 5:06 pm

I am definitely going to become good friends with A Lady in France – you definitely have a right sense of things. 🙂

  31. October 25, 2012 12:03 pm

Sorry to inform you, but you are a techie. My husband tried to say he ‘didn’t work with computers’ when he worked at Cisco. Didn’t buy that then and don’t buy Ali now. It’s ok to admit it. Coming from someone who couldn’t do a blog post until Glenn had time to help me transfer pics from his cellphone to my blog, I would be classified as ‘not a techie’.

    • October 28, 2012 2:26 pm

I’m not a techie either…I have no desire to be one either!

And funny enough, Ali often says he doesn’t work with computers either. Is this just denial? I have to wonder…

    • October 28, 2012 5:08 pm

If you were to ask me to fix a computer – I couldn’t help you. I really don’t like doing internet research and fixing things. I guess cables are intuitive.

  32. October 25, 2012 12:52 pm

What a funny post.. I can always count on you both to make me laugh. I can’t over all of Ali’s gadgets, I own “one” Apple product and I’m thrilled, why do you need so many???

Seriously considering getting a MAC, just not sure since I know all the PC shortcuts and I really don’t wanna learn. 🙂

    • October 28, 2012 2:27 pm

I can’t use MAC computers…not sure why. I guess I’m just a PC person? But I do love how light and efficient-seeming the MacBook is!

    • October 28, 2012 5:10 pm

Now that Windows 8 is out – give it a try. If you haven’t used the windows phones, you’ll be pleasantly surprised by how much more intuitive it is than an iphone.

  33. October 25, 2012 5:46 pm

Ameena and Ali – you guys crack me up! Great post. And Ali, you can say potato or potahto or whatever – but dude – you’re a techie. Own it, man.

    Kiran

    • October 28, 2012 2:27 pm

Thank you MC! And yes, I agree…just own it Ali! There are worse things to be called than a techie. 🙂

    • October 28, 2012 5:10 pm

      I cannot, and shall not.
      🙂

  34. October 26, 2012 5:04 pm

Hmmm. Okay, I have to agree with Ali about having multiple devices if he’s in the industry. But I actually don’t think techie is a derogatory word. I’m not in the industry at all and I have an iPhone, and iPod, a laptop (which I’m planning to swap for a MacBook in a year) and an iMac. Plus a computer I keep at work. I had a guy say once to me, “Pretty techie for a Mom,” and I took that as a compliment.

    But that photo? Kinda fuzzy.

    • October 28, 2012 2:29 pm

I’m impressed! You do have a lot of technology.

I hear great things about the MacBook. I am intrigued but Ali said we are not a MAC family. Plus, I am a PC person…

  35. October 26, 2012 11:14 pm

Eid Mubarak to all your family !! Dekho chand aayaaa 🙂 !!

    • October 28, 2012 2:30 pm

A belated thank you for the Eid wishes! Thank you so much.

I will need my husband to translate the second sentence but offhand I’m going to guess, “Look, the moon has come?” Am I close?

  36. October 28, 2012 12:18 pm

That photo is hilarious. Glad that it could make such a worthy addition to the post. 🙂

Hope you are well, Ameena! It’s been a while.

Ha ha! Sorry Ali, I am with Ameena ….that perfect cable in your car story IS hysterical 🙂 Now off to check whether my ‘techie’ son in law does the same!

  39. November 24, 2012 2:52 am

I think Ali should have his own blog… 🙂
