I want to be … Gwyneth

May 22, 2010

I am unimpressed by famous people.  This is probably because I see them on a regular basis due to the nature of my work and also because I live in Los Angeles.  Stars are ubiquitous around here.  I’ve seen Tyra Banks when she has no makeup on and her hair is a big mess (talk about the pot calling the kettle black, right?).  I’ve also seen Jennifer Aniston and although I am a fan of her work I really didn’t look at her twice.  So it is pretty ridiculous that despite my jaded nature I am absolutely enthralled with one of the few people I haven’t run across yet – Gwyneth Paltrow.

I’ve always admired Gwyneth…I mean, whats not to like?  She’s classy, smart, articulate, and gorgeous.  She has awesome hair.  She gets to split her time in London and NYC, my two favorite cities.  She’s married to Chris Martin.  And did I mention she has good hair?

I think I first became obsessed with Gwyneth in A Perfect Murder.  She not only looked stunning in her short hair and pearls, but she also lived my dream life as a UN employee living in an enormous apartment overlooking Central Park, while married to Michael Douglas.  Aside from almost being a murder victim, I can’t think of a better existence.

I’ll admit that Gwyneth isn’t perfect though.  Her children’s name choices are…unique at best.  And while her style is usually spot on I can’t help but wonder what was up with her shellacked hair and the ill-fitting Ralph Lauren dress she sported when she accepted her Best Actress Award?  Sure it was 1999 and we all make fashion mistakes, but I don’t make them at the Oscar’s when I have a swarm of people surrounding me, being paid to make me look good.

So Gwyneth got a lot of grief for starting her GOOP newsletter. I suppose it does get annoying when stars decide to foray into so many different fields.  I know it drives me nuts when actors/actresses write books!  I mean, why is Madonna qualified to write a children’s book?  Or better yet, Jay Leno?  But that’s a whole other post.

Regardless of how many fields Gwyneth decides to dabble in I just can’t hate her and it goes without saying that I love her newsletter!  Her restaurant and travel tips are great, her book suggestions are fabulous, and her recipes are delicious.  Last week Maya and I randomly decided to make Gwyneth’s Homemade Granola Bars and they were SO good.

As always we had to make a few substitutions due to the picky nature of my household…we used raisins instead of dried apricots and threw in some chocolate chips per Maya.  We also didn’t have brown rice syrup so I made up some simple syrup instead which probably accounted for the crumbly nature of the granola bars.  I’m sure my knife skills (or lack thereof) didn’t help but despite how they looked, these granola bars were still delicious.

And when my #1 helper licks the mixing bowl clean:

You know this recipe is a keeper.

What movie star would you want to be if you could be anyone?

I was never a fan of Gwyneth Paltrow. Then I saw her on The Marriage Ref and she was hilarious. Turns out she’s kind of awesome!!

Gweneth is absolutely lovely. She is very impressive and really stands out amongst stars who are always drinking, partying too much, and getting into some sort of trouble. Gweneth is a class act.
Who would i want to be as a movie star? Nobody, I like who I am, I’m happy to say :). Although I wouldn’t mind having Gweneth’s beautiful long legs.
    Have a great weekend.

Lol, did not know your fascination with hair….but you DO have good hair, Ameena!
Gwyneth…has really bad choices for names…I mean, GOOP? And her kids’ names are kinda ridiculous; I feel sorry for them! But I really didn’t even consider reading her newsletter…I guess I always thought you can’t trust a skinny cook…though I guess it’s ironic considering I’m skinny myself.

Gwyneth Paltrow IS gorgeous and definitely has all those characteristics you mentioned so I can see why so many people love her. As cool as being famous is, I’m not sure if I could give up my privacy in exchange for fame though. I say this mostly through the eyes of a protective mother. Also, it’s not just about knowing how to look and act great on camera but you need to know how to speak well when interviewed, stay true to yourself but also to your fans, you gotta have good people skills, not to mention being able to memorize huge amounts, plus it helps to be multi-talented. So many other pressures attached to being an actor/actress. I don’t think I have all those talents so with that said, I don’t think there is any actress I’d want to be but there is definitely one I adore and totally support who I think does have all that and more. I’ve never met her before but I can tell she’s totally down to earth. I don’t think you can say the same about many actors/actresses so that’s why she rocks in my books 😉 Aaack! Sorry for the essay of an answer. Have a super weekend.
    P.S.
Love that picture of Maya. Priceless!

oh i love Gwyneth…and I used to follow GOOP until I lost my link…must go find it again.

she was getting a lot of flack for it..never got that! I loved it.

why can’t Celebrities be normal people….jeez

you crack me up….I just saw Jennifer Aniston…no big.

    I would have passed out..but I never see celebrities…

I met Jewel once (thanks to my charming husband) and Steve Poltz too.

    that was AMAZING.

    she’s cool.

    I don’t know who’d I like to be. Maybe Angelina…I mean I’d HATE the publicity…but a big family, a big bankroll…booming career… world traveler and her UN work I love too…her talant..and Brad???

I mean. Does it get better?

but than again, living a quiet happy life would be hard to give up.

some days i love just being boring ole me!

    xoxooxxo

this is funny: Gwyeneth and Brad were a pair once upon a time….and Brad and Jen were too….

maybe if I could somehow connect the dots to Jewel…I could say I’ve met them all!

    or not

    🙂
    Happy Saturday

  8. May 22, 2010 10:33 am

That’s my number one rule of cooking: if it tastes good, eat it! Looks are NOT important. 😉

  9. May 22, 2010 11:13 am

I would totally be Katherine Hepburn. Talk about a strong, intelligent woman! (You didn’t mention if the person had to be alive.)

  10. May 22, 2010 12:14 pm

    good post.

i actually don’t like Gwyneth Paltrow…I know I ought not listen to gossip…but I hear she is very very “stuck up”…plus she seems obsessed with looking a certain way..drives me nuts.

    chris martin i like.

who would i want to be? i have no idea…it could potentially change every day..as soon as u like someone, something happens and u realize their just like a jekyll-hyde type person (like us all!) , ha.

but: Betty White…gotta love Betty White 🙂

  11. May 22, 2010 12:47 pm

The granola bars look amazing! I saw them on GOOP.. I actually really like the newsletter! I usually just read the recipes and health stuff, but I like her style of eating so I think that’s why I enjoy it so much.
I don’t know who I would want to be! Abe Lincoln maybe, haha…even though he’s not a movie star.
I’d like to be the girl who played Papi on the L Word! She’s sooo pretty 🙂 But I don’t know anything else about her!

  12. May 22, 2010 12:59 pm

i’m actually not a big gwyneth fan. i think she’s too dainty and delicate for my liking. i’d want to be jennifer gardner because she’s one helluva bamf 🙂

  13. May 22, 2010 3:03 pm

I would also like to be Gwyneth. You know I share your enthusiasm for her. I can’t remember when I became obsessed, but I have seen all of her old movies. I love “Emma” and “Moonlight and Valentino.” Yes, obsessed. I was wondering if the granola bars you mentioned the other day were from her GOOP recipe. I like her newsletter. Much of it doesn’t apply to my life, but that’s ok. I wouldn’t expect it to!

  14. May 22, 2010 3:10 pm

Gwyneth has a newsletter?? That’s a good looking granola bar recipe!

I haven’t seen enough movies to be a big fan of any celebrity lol. But I do like Jennifer Aniston 😀

  15. May 22, 2010 4:22 pm

I have never watched any of Gwyneth’s films. It seems she has a liking for er…quirky names. I don;t think I like to live my life constantly under the spotlight and having bodyguards whereveer I go. I would rather be a plain Jane any day than a movie star. That said, being Emma Watson is not a bad idea. She’s smart and beautiful and not blown away by the Hollywood fame that so many tweens fall prey to. Love her!

  16. May 22, 2010 4:52 pm

Ahahaha I love this quirky obsession with Gwyneth! Fantastic! If I could be a movie star I’d probably want to be … um … fine I’ll say it: Angelina Jolie. She’s hot. She’s philanthropic. She’s married to freaking Brad Pitt. She lives an insane life. What’s not to want?

On the flip side I’d also kill to spend a day as Paris Hilton. I know, so weird, but like…it’s this strange fascination.

  17. May 22, 2010 5:00 pm

I’ve never really understood the hype and obsession surrounding celebrities, either. Sure they have tonnes of money and live the life of ultimate luxury, but when it comes down to it, they’re just normal people who do whatever it takes to get attention and be seen as “unique” – the ridiculous names they give their children are prime examples; why give your daughter a normal name like Jennifer when you can call her Apple instead? I don’t get it…

Those granola bars DO look good, though, and I’d love to make some but I don’t have any rice syrup in stock… and while I’ve seen it in stores, I’m not willing to buy an entire jar for one recipe.

  18. May 22, 2010 6:11 pm

Hey Love! I totally did a post on the same bars from Goop! LOVE THEM! I also love Gwyneth…especially after seeing her in Iron Man 2, she is so hot! And yes, has fab hair!

I just love Jennifer Aniston, but is that really a surprise?

I am totally a reality show junky and love Kim Kardashian as well. See this is why I can’t have cable, but i watch online….I need to stop with the celebs like you said you did. I would look at people.com daily sometimes 3x a day!

    XXOO

  19. May 22, 2010 9:15 pm

There are some stars I really admire. Paltrow is really cool. I’m also a big fan of Jessica Beil, Kate Winslet, and Cate Blanchett. As for the boys, I love Gerard Butler, Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, and Johnny Depp. Really cool people.

Even if she’s a bit…questionable, I also really like Angelina Jolie. She just doesn’t give a twig about what people think about her. So “rawr!”

  20. May 23, 2010 5:13 am

Reese Witherspoon… she has great hair, always smiling, cute kids, and hot boyfriends!

Okay, Gwyneth gets a little ridiculous with her cleanses. I remember reading something the other month about her filming in Nashville. She made some comment about eating so much fried chicken, etc. that she had to do another cleanse. Umm, hello… that was her choice! Nashville is like any other city- they don’t go around forcing people to eat fried chicken all day long. 🙂

  21. May 23, 2010 7:01 am

Ok THANK YOU. Everyone talks about how amazing her dress was for the Oscars that year and all I could think was, yeah, it’s pretty, but couldn’t they have altered it a little? It looked too big- or like she tried it on and loved it with a strapless bra, and then forgot the bra…

I was concerned I was the only one who thought this.

yeah, i told jonesy that i could have used them and him three yars ago when i was in the deepest darkness EVER. he was very surprised.

hahha i know, doesn’t she look so put together in that show? i loved the one where she adn the girl were eating churros and chocolate in the morning. so amazing.

YES! june 9th i end, so we can do another walk, or hang out in the park! =D

  23. May 23, 2010 8:50 am

I love Gwenyth too — she’s such a classy lady! And yes, she has amazing hair! 🙂 The granola bars really delicious — that pic of Maya says it all!

  24. May 23, 2010 9:03 am

I am a HUGE Keri Russell fan. I would love to meet her. She seems so down to earth and un-pretenious. I would also really like to meet Natalie Portman and Heidi Klum. 🙂

i really like gwenyth too. i’ve actually been in her mom’s house b/c she was hosting a fundraiser for the high school abe went to (she’s also an alum) and there were all these family pix of gwenyth around (obviously) it was very cool to see!

  26. May 23, 2010 10:48 am

Gwyneth is so gorgeous! If I could meet any actress though it would be Sandra Bullock. I have a total girl crush on her!!

  27. May 23, 2010 11:55 am

Those look awesome. Licking the bowl looks like a pretty good time!

  28. May 23, 2010 12:08 pm

    Good for Maya!

I’ve never seen anyone famous–I’m super jealous. I would want to be… Jennifer Aniston. Abs & Hair. Done.

  29. May 23, 2010 5:45 pm

I LOVE this post. And that picture!! Hilarious. I am so guilty of that…
Not a huge fan of Gywneth…I don’t like how she was all about the Macrobiotic Diet, but then after her kids eased up…but does weird cleanses for movies and stuff..oh who am I kidding? It’s because she’s gorgeous and I want her hair! 😉
I also was sooo jealous when she first got married to Chris Martin – I loved him…now I think he is a bit of a ‘mess’ haha…
Really – Jen Aniston – was she plain looking??
GOD – can you get me a job with your company ?? For real…I ‘ll be a freaking gopher…I am such a quick learner – seriously…:)
Who would I want to be? Uh…who wouldn’t I want to be is more like it! I think Halle Berry is gorgeous; as far as acting roles though – Hilary Swank is stellar (of course I just watched P.S I Love You – so I would say the most freshest in my mind wouldn’t I? Hah!).

  30. May 24, 2010 7:37 am

The picture of Maya licking the bowl just made my monday 🙂

  31. May 24, 2010 12:42 pm

I’m watching Sliding Doors now, my favorite chick flick with Gweneth. Love her too!

  32. May 24, 2010 9:36 pm

I do have a soft spot for Gwyneth. She is pretty cool. I’m not the type of person who gets all excited about “celeb spotting” or obsesses over certain celebrities or anything like that. I admit, I read gossip rags for the entertainment, though. Theyre pretty good for mind-numbing escape from reality. If I could pick one celeb to be, I would choose Alicia Silverstone for a variety of reasons..She’s an activist without being overwhelming or annoying. Plus I loved her in Clueless!

  33. May 25, 2010 6:49 am

I just posted on homemade granola bars! These are very intriguing.

  34. May 25, 2010 11:37 am

It kind of cracks me up how alike we are. LOL I LOVE Gwyneth. I took her picture to the hair salon and asked for that short cut. I got it and I loved it. Had it for five years. Now I am growing it out and it looks like a hot mess. If I could look like anyone it would be her…or that cutie Jessica Simpson. She is a doll, especially without makeup. By the way, I just told my sister five minutes ago that if my daughter doesn’t stop asking me so many questions today, I am going to hide from her. 🙂

  35. May 26, 2010 5:02 pm

I’m fiiiinally commenting on your blog. I’ve been reading from time to time, but meandering off in the silent distance. I’ve got nothing in particular for Gwyneth, but a little something for the girl who plays Amélie. Obviously not enough though for me to remember her name. Oh well! 🙂

  36. June 9, 2010 10:58 am

    LOL. Cute photo of Maya.
