Diva-Like Behavior

March 28, 2010

Maya spent the weekend with her grandparents again, and while they take really good care of her, she often adapts some diva-like behaviors at their place that simply don’t fly at home.  Yesterday, for example, I called to talk to her and when my mother-in-law asked her to come to the phone, Maya replied: “I’ll come to the phone if you give me $1,000.”

I’m not even sure where to start on this…am I more annoyed that she didn’t want to talk to me?  Or am I more annoyed that she is channeling a majority of the little L.A. park brats?  Or, am I even more annoyed that Ali thought this was hysterically funny?  I’ll have to get back to you on this.

Anyway, aside from Maya’s Linda Evangelista-like behavior the rest of the weekend has been great.

On Friday night we hit our favorite restaurant Porta Via in Beverly Hills for a little salmon (me):

Salmon, steamed kale, and brown rice.

And some sea bass (Ali):

Sea Bass with mango salsa, asparagus, and brown rice.

The weather was great so we sat outside:

I know I am horticulturally (that is probably not a word) challenged but is this is a cherry tree…in the middle of Beverly Hills…in the middle of March?

After dinner we decided to order “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” on DirecTV, but after 20 minutes of torturing ourselves we turned the horrible movie off and watched fell asleep in front of the TV instead.

Saturday morning Ali decided he needed to go the Century City Westfield Mall and since I needed to buy a gift I joined him.

What?  You don’t take your laptop to the mall too?

As Ali hunkered down and got cozy at the Apple store for reasons I couldn’t be bothered to ask about, I hit GAP Kids to get the aforementioned birthday gift.  Afterwards, with Ali still occupied, I found myself at my favorite store CUSP purchasing a completely unneeded, but very cute pair of shoes:

Just a short time later I found myself purchasing another pair:

This is what happens when I need to keep myself busy at the mall, hence why I usually avoid the mall altogether.

Ali finally resurfaced and after hitting up Trader Joe’s we headed home for lunch.  I made him a turkey sandwich:

And made myself a random concoction of leftovers.  I won’t bore or disgust you with a picture.

My mom dropped by in the afternoon and we headed to Real Food Daily for coffee and gluten-free cookies.  I forgot my camera but let’s just say that our first visit to RFD was not a good one.  Hopefully their food is better than their coffee/bakery items.

I dropped my mom off at my brother’s place and returned home to get ready for dinner.  We headed over to our friend Adam and Maliha’s place where she cooked up a storm – salmon, chicken, pasta, bread, caesar salad (made by my friend Nadia):

And a delicious watermelon, feta, green bean salad that was out of this world:

Sorry for the iPhone pictures but I forgot my camera again.

Friday was Nadia’s son Shayan’s 5th Birthday so we celebrated last night with my dessert contribution of a Godiva Chocolate Bar Cake:

I obviously couldn’t eat any but it received raved reviews.

So far this morning I’ve gone to the gym, done some laundry, made a batch of brownies for tonight, cleaned the kitchen, and typed this post.  Now we are headed to pick up our little diva.

I’m sure you can imagine she and I will have some words.

Love those shoes (and that cake)! I’m going to have to hit up the mall myself to pick up some nice things for the warmer weather, but considering how much shopping wears me out, I’ll probably keep putting it off until the weather turns cold again 😉

What a lovely weekend (other than Maya’s diva reply, I’m sorry I thought that was cute of course until my own daughter starts saying things like that) you’re having. Those shoes are beautiful but so out of my league. I’ll wear something like that “maybe” once a month.

What a beautiful spread of food. And your cake sounds delicious!

  3. March 28, 2010 11:40 am

I loveeee loveeee those shoes! I must get my hands on some :)!

Hehehe! Your little diva is growing up mighty fast 🙂

So I had a million comments and then saw that watermelon salad and got so distracted that I forgot what I wanted to say.
That happens to me a lot.
Anyhow, sounds like a great weekend!

Its a good thing that Maya’s so cute eh? How can you stay mad at that sweet little face?

Holy YUM – amazing food spread, Ameena!
That Godiva Chocolate Bar cake looked terrific.. Too bad you couldn´t taste it!
    :/
    Oh, and cute shoes!
    😉
    Have a great week!

Love the shoes:). I can’t go to a mall either without spending money I don’t have. Looks like a great weekend! Isn’t the weather amazing?

I have a friend that uses the term “grandparent detox” for when she gets her girl back from her parents – maybe that is what Maya needs too!

Your weekend seems quite lovely and productive and the shoes are very cute!

  9. March 28, 2010 3:06 pm

i think it’s a rule for kids to act all diva when they’re with their grandparents. i know i did as do all my younger siblings. there’s something about the fact that she is a mom and you can’t exactly reprimand her like you would maya haha

  10. March 28, 2010 3:15 pm

I just have to say those are some fantabulous shoes!

  11. March 28, 2010 3:19 pm

    $1000? That’s pretty steep! haha

That watermelon salad looks delicious and refreshing. I’ll have to try it!

  12. March 28, 2010 3:46 pm

Oooh, LOVE the sandals!!! And yeah, Maya’s comment would piss me off too…and my husband would think it was hilarious 🙂

  13. March 28, 2010 4:52 pm

Cute shoes! By the way, when I saw the previews for “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” I dubbed it “Did You Hear About the Worst Movie Ever?” I think Hugh Grant needs to just…stop.

Sorry I missed you this weekend! Did you get my message on your cell? You’re like my sister who doesn’t say her name in the recording, so I hope I had the right #!

    Enjoy the rest of Sunday!

  14. March 28, 2010 5:50 pm

LOL- I would have laughed at what Maya said, but I always laugh at other people’s children when the parents clearly aren’t laughing.

I love those TB sandals- so cute. Was Ali getting his laptop fixed or is the air in Apple laced with adderall? 🙂

  15. March 28, 2010 5:51 pm

Where did you get the recipe for that cake? It looks amazing but the link took me back to the post. 😉

    • March 29, 2010 6:24 am

Sorry about that…I fixed the link. It goes to my recipe page which really needs to be organized at some point!

  16. March 28, 2010 5:51 pm

    hehe @ Maya 🙂
I have a 10 year old sister who cajoles my mom into giving her a DOLLAR when she goes upstairs to turn the lights off…lights that SHE left on in the first place!

  17. March 28, 2010 5:52 pm

I’m loving those shoes!!! Tory Burch right?? I love her shoes!

  18. March 28, 2010 5:59 pm

Those are some seriously cute shoes! I’m sure you’ll be able to steer Maya on the right path 😉 Once when I was little, my sisters and I left a note on the front door while my parents were out, saying that in order to get into the house, my parents needed to slip their credit card under the door. We were bad, bad little girls.

    Have a great week!

  19. March 28, 2010 6:09 pm

What a nice weekend! I bet you look amazing in your new shoes!! 🙂

That watermelon salad does look out of this world!! I might try and make that for our Easter dinner this weekend.

I feel compelled to defend myself… a) I was having trouble with my phone sync’g to my computer, hence I had it to show the Apple guys, b) I would not normally take a laptop to the mall , I’d at least have a netbook.

    (j/k)

    What a relaxing weekend.

I remember my little nieces said something similar once. It was a moment we still joke about to this day. hehehe…

The food was so appetizing. By the way the shoes is really cute.

  24. March 29, 2010 5:36 am

First and most importantly, that watermelon salad looks out of this world and as soon as we get watermelon over here I’m making it. Which means in June, but whatever.

Second, Ali sounds like my husband. He carts his technology all over the place. I can never understand why he must bring his laptop when we go visit family for the weekend. His answer: “Just in case. And I like to have it there.” It’s like his girlfriend.

And lastly, $1,000 for talking to you on the phone? Perhaps next time Maya asks for dessert you should say, “You can have dessert if you give me $1,000.” Ha ha!

  25. March 29, 2010 6:24 am

Sounds like a great weekend. I miss having a normal weekend. We just ran around like crazy.. from the bike ride to the birthday party to a basketball watching party… I want my life back… only 3 more weeks.

By the way… I bought Avolon Organics, the lavendar facewash and moisturizer.. so far so good..

  27. March 29, 2010 7:24 am

    Those shoes are TOO cute!!!!

  28. March 29, 2010 7:39 am

What a productive weekend! I remember how my grandparents spoiled me too — they always go over the top! 🙂

  29. March 29, 2010 9:43 am

oh boy…what are we going to do with these little ones? 🙂

Mine kicked me in the chin…twice because he was mad that I made him take a 3 second bath.

    and yes
we had words too. and a time out.
(or was it ME that needed a time out) not sure.

love LOVE your pretty shoes! and in our home I am the one trekking my technology everywhere! it’s getting bad!

    xoxo

    have a great day

I am totally totally drooling over the beautiful salmon….i only wish i had the skills to make something like that at home!! And i’m a HUGE fan of your new sandals. They’re both incredibly gorgeous!!

  33. March 29, 2010 1:57 pm

Oh gosh. I thought that Morgans movie looked awful! I hate it when that happens!

What a beautiful spread of food. I love parties like that 🙂 You can tell so much work and thought went in to it!

  34. March 29, 2010 2:41 pm

That watermelon salad sounds absolutely delicious. I don’t know what I’d devour first…that or the Godiva chocolate bar cake! 😉

    I love your new sandals!

  35. March 29, 2010 3:06 pm

Hello! I’ve been neglectful of my blog “friends” of late but I’m back, armed with a pot of good coffee and reading my way through my favorites. As always, I love your food postings and writing. Hope you cute little “Diva” is back to normal. But, spoiling, isn’t that what grandparents are for?

    Best,
    Bonnie

Haha it’s so funny that you wrote this because I used to be a TOTAL diva when I came back from my grandma’s! She would build me a fort and make me pancakes for breakfast, and I started to expect the same treatment at home. Mama set me straight real quick – homegirl needed a reality check!

Haha I love that Ali took his computer to the mall. And cute shoes (not Ali’s, yours).

That watermelon salad DOES look off the chain!

  38. March 29, 2010 6:07 pm

Beautiful sandals! I hope you get dragged off to the mall more often so you can keep providing sandal inspiration.

The Maya diva-ness is too funny, as is her mommy’s take on it. Sorry to say, I’d be snorting in laughter if she said the same thing to me 🙂

  39. March 29, 2010 6:32 pm

us poor people are droooling over the T.B. shoes, the Godiva Chocolate Bar Cake, and the dinner out in Bev Hills. Sounds just like my last life, the one when I had a 6 figure job before kiddo 🙂 This life, not so much. I buy sale laundry detergent and wear 4 yr old sandals.
    xoxo

  40. March 29, 2010 6:56 pm

Godiva cake? Oh gosh…Ameena, I know you love chocolate…what a sacrifice you make all the time!
haha was the movie THAT bad?

  41. March 30, 2010 1:30 am

Stanford Shopping Ctr has a nice Apple Store where I have been getting lessons and help with iPhone, iTune, and iPod syncs. I love the genius bar there and the A-people are so helpful. Yes I take my Mac to the mall too. Love yr food pics there and am drooling over the salmon, seabass, water melon and pea salad, plus cake pics. Is there a recipe for the water melon salad? I think you are ready for the warmer weather with all those cute shoes.

    • March 30, 2010 5:51 am

No recipe for the watermelon salad yet, my friend Maliha made it. I will ask her though and post it soon. 🙂

I know that the weekend is WAY over, but it sounds like a great weekend. I can’t believe that you cook food for other people that you knowingly don’t/can’t eat. I am NEVER that selfless! I’m loving all of the blossoms this spring!
